Vol. 4 or Stained Class or Piece of Mind?
« on: February 13, 2018, 12:16:43 PM »
Here we have fourth albums by heavy metal giants: Vol. 4, Stained Class and Piece of Mind.
Between these 3 which album do you like the most?

I'm a fan of all 3 albums, but my vote goes to Vol. 4, hands down.

I would rank them:
Vol. 4
Piece of Mind
Stained Class

Piece of Mind. Not a big fan of the others
From a Mega Man Legends island jamming power metal to a Walrus listening to black metal, I like your story arc.

Piece of Mind > Most anything by any other metal band ever

So the choice is easy for me. Also, PoM is one of my very favorite Maiden albums, the other two, not so much of their respective bands.
I use my sig to pimp some bands from Italy! Check out Elvenking (Power / Folk metal), Folkstone (Rock / Medieval metal), Arcana Opera (Gothic/Noir/Heavy metal) and the beautiful voice of Elisa!

Same here.  For my tastes, this is an easy poll.

If it had been Sabotage or SBS this would be pretty much unanswerable for me. However, Vol 4 is pretty middle of the road for me. Of the other two, they're both among my favorite albums from each band. In the case of Maiden they've got plenty of top notch albums, including 4 or 5 that rival POM. This era was Priest's high water mark, so I'm going with Stained Class. Also, while I'm a big Clive Burr fan, Les Binks FTW.

Vol 4 and Stained class are both solid released, but wouldn't be selected as my favorites from the respective bands. Both bands released quite a few albums that I like better. Piece of mind, on the other hand, is pretty fantastic. It is also my #7 when ranking the Iron Maiden albums.

Piece of Mind, and it's not close, but it's not really a good comparison (I get the "4th album" comparison and all, but otherwise it doesn't make much sense).

You've got VERY different time frames (Vol. 4 in 1972, Stained Class in 1978, and Piece of Mind in 1983).  Sabbath was at the height of its early popularity and so strung out on cocaine that they could barely get the album recorded.  Priest hadn't achieved any real measure of success yet, and Maiden was coming off the success of TNotB.

In my opinion, the only average song on Piece is Still Life.  Everything else ranges from above average to all-time great.  Stained Class has one all-time great song (Realms) and a couple other strong songs.  Volume 4 has only a couple songs that I find memorable.

HA!  No!  It's like trying to decide between kids.  Or teeth.  Or testicles.

Vol. 4 came first, so there's that, but like el Barto said, it's not Sabotage.    Piece of Mind is awesome, and I can  remember the tour where they opened with "Where Eagles Dare" and Bruce's mike was out and yet I could STILL hear him singing over the band.   But  it's not Powerslave, and it has BOTH "Quest For Fire" and "Sun and Steel" (not high points of the catalogue for me).  Stained Class is one of my three favorite Priest albums - and like el Barto said, it has the legendary Les Binks - but it's not Screaming and IT has Heroes End (not a highpoint of the catalogue).  So...  gun to head, Vol. 4 just because there's not one song that really is a skipper like on the other two (plus it has SUPERNAUT!).

This is what I was thinking. They're almost not even comparable for this reason.

Which probably accounts for my response.

In terms of fanboyism I would rank those bands JP>BS (Ozzy era)>IM  but of those three albums I would choose Piece of Mind.

Stained Class for me, although Volume 4 is damn good as well.

Not enough of a Maiden fan to put theirs in the same ballpark.

I think WildRanger is KevShmev's "Metal" alter ego! :lol

I actually had to think about this for a while. Great albums all.

I ultimately went with Vol. 4.

It was a toss up between PoM and Stained Class, went with Stained Class.  Second half of PoM doesn't grab me too much. All of Stained Class is solid. Supernaut is awesome on Vol. 4 though.
