Sleepytime Gorilla Museum....why did I wait so long.
« on: January 27, 2018, 06:16:49 PM »
My humble apologies to everyone who ever mentioned this amazing band....it was always in the queue of "bands I'd like to check out someday".

Well....today was the day.    I've just heard a few tracks from the first two albums, and I think it's enough to convince me to buy all three ASAP.

They are fantastic. They haven't released one single weak track. The two last albums are the best. If you liked the Gorilla, definitely check Free Salamander Exhibit. The band is composed by three former members of the Gorilla: Nils Frykdahl, Dan Rathbun, Michael Mellender. Their self-titled album is awesome and very similar to the Gorilla. Unfortunately, Carla is not a member.

Happy listening.

Totally insane band. I heard "Sleep is Wrong" and was instantly hooked.

Love this band. Only got to see them live once.

Haven't seen Free Salamander Exhibit yet though.

I still have to listen properly to their third album and Free Salamander Exhibit, but I love the first two. Maybe the debut is more accessible, but it's hard to say that when there are tracks like Ablutions and Stain

i've always respected them more than enjoyed them.

And I enjoyed seeing them live with Bubblemath, multiple times from memory.

but I never could get fully into them; but since then I have gotten into the likes of UneXpect, Fjokra, SikTh, maudlin of the well, and even a schizophrenic band like Bent Knee,  so I probably should be into them.

I should probably try checking them out again.

I just recall a lot of their sound is dissonant and in minor-keys and includes trash can percussion and whatnot, which can work when  the songs include other rewarding parts.

That's true, most of their music is full of dissonance. If you don't enjoy it, then the band is probably not for you. The reward is in the dissonance itself. It might be hard to get into them, but it is well worth it.

I gotta be honest with you guys - the band name was so weird that I was so sure this was just a parody post, talking about a non existant band, that it was bumped for whatever reason  :lol
I use my sig to pimp some bands from Italy! Check out Elvenking (Power / Folk metal), Folkstone (Rock / Medieval metal), Arcana Opera (Gothic/Noir/Heavy metal) and the beautiful voice of Elisa!

I told my friend two of my upcoming concerts were Sleepytime Gorilla Museum and King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard. He wasn't sure if I was being serious. :lol

Anyways, reminder that Of Natural History is a fantastic album that you should absolutely listen to if you enjoy experimental prog or avant-garde metal

They should do a package tour with with the Psychedelic Porn Crumpets and the Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza.

I'm not generally a fan of either style on the whole but they seem to be one of the exceptions.

damn the new album is like, by far the most consistent thing i've enjoyed from them, and after a whole seventeen years of silence too :lol

save it! is so goddamn funny too

Yeah I'm really hoping this isn't the last album they put out, though I'm not exactly expecting another since apparently this album is mostly stuff they wrote (and sometimes even recorded) upwards of ten years ago and they just never got around to finishing it. S.P.Q.R. especially is an unchanged recording they released as an obscure single all the way back in 2004. So it makes sense that it sounds like they haven't missed a beat after all this time, cuz most of the music isn't actually new for them. :lol

But I'm happy they did eventually finish this album because it's one of their best. I need to check out that Free Salamander Exhibit album at some point because I only found out it existed recently and I'm curious how close to SGM's sound it is.

Never really listened to them before, but I liked this new album quite a bit.

they were crazy live this past Tuesday in Minneapolis. They played like 5 or 6 tracks off the new record.

So apparently we’re getting two sets tonight??? They just came on with no opener, played a full set (which was great on its own), and they’re about to come back for another one.

Wow, what a show. No idea why we were the first (maybe only?) show this tour to get two sets, but I’m feeling blessed that we were. Looking at the previous show setlists, we got every song played this tour except one Gunday’s Child, which I would have loved, but I’m certainly not complaining. The performances and atmosphere were stellar and I loved seeing the unconventional instruments the bassist used. I’m not sure if there will be any more tours after this but if there are I’ll sure as hell be there.
