Create a mix-CD for your favorite artist
« on: January 17, 2018, 09:23:55 AM »
The thread title says it all. If you will create one CD of your favorite artist's songs, how will you do it?

I'll start with my mix CD for Queen:

Ogre Battle
Tie Your Mother Down
Dragon Attack
Somebody to Love
Seven Seas of Rhye
Stone Cold Crazy
It's Late
The Millionaire Waltz
Don't Stop Me Now
I Can't Live With You (1997 Rocks Retake)
The March of the Black Queen
Funny How Love Is
Save Me
Innuendo
Hammer To Fall
Bohemian Rhapsody
Is This The World We Created?
The Show Must Go On

Basically, I just listen to Images and Words, then Awake, then Falling Into Infinity, then SFAM, then Six Degrees, then Train of Thought, then Octavarium, then Systematic Chaos, then Black Clouds, then ADTOE, then DT12, and then The Astonishing.

Being on a huge Queen kick lately (to the point of even filling in some catalogue holes) I have to say, that's a top notch playlist, and kudos for including one of my favorite Queen songs ever, and a song that gets overlooked by virtually everyone:  "Funny How Love Is".  I LOVE that song.  Really nice mix of hits versus deep tracks.     I would have put on One Vision, but that's an incredibly minor quibble.

My hard part is picking the band. Purple?  DT?  Marillion?  Genesis?  Maiden? Yes?  Kiss?

Does anyone care?  Any suggestions?

I like listening to ballads and softer stuff these days. Here's Toto if I left out the heavier, more uptempo stuff and focused on ballads and easier listening.

99
I Won't Hold You Back
It's A Feeling
Waiting For Your Love
I'll Be Over You/I Will Remember/The Other End of Time (they're similar enough, so for a CD pick one of three: gun to head, I choose I Will Remember)
Just Can't Get To You
After You've Gone
Melanie
Spanish Steps
Bottom of Your Soul
Spiritual Man
The Little Things
All The Tears That Shine
(edit: only including Africa if there's room on the disc for it, otherwise, letting the other songs shine)

From a Mega Man Legends island jamming power metal to a Walrus listening to black metal, I like your story arc.

This is proving difficult as some of my favorite songs by some of my favorite bands are all epics, like 15-30 minutes long, so picking enough songs but only having 80 minutes to do is pretty tough for me, but I'll try one band...

Spock's Beard (Neal-Era mini-epics)
The Good Don't Last
Go The Way You Go
The Doorway
Walking On The Wind
Crack The Big Sky
Harm's Way
At The End Of The Day

It totals at about 80:24, but with a little bit of overburn, it can fit onto one CD-r, so there.  :lol

I made a million of these back in the day, before mp3s allowed us the luxury of getting up to 700 MB worth of songs on a single CD-R.

I still remember the song length of many old songs because of the mixed tapes and CDs we used to make.

QUEEN 79 minutes

I finally got all of this decade's remasters (either through friends, library, and a few purchases).  I have been redoing my GH I and II.  My version of Greatest sHits III was always superior to the official one.  Plus a new 'Rocks' and what I call 'Omega'.  Just did a couple discs of the more mellow material, including Freddie and Brian solo work.  Doing this is a 'killer', but......

We Will Rock You [BBC fast version]
I Want It All
Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon
I'm In Love With My Car
You're My Best Friend
Killer Queen
Stone Cold Crazy
Somebody To Love
Procession/Father To Son
Spread Your Wings [BBC version]
Keep Passing The Open Windows
Don't Stop Me Now
Tie Your Mother Down
Let Me Live
A Winter's Tale
The Show Must Go On

and then we'll move on and finish with these from Wembley: the Freddie 'sing along' (end of 'A Kind of Magic'),
Bohemian Rhapsody / Big Spender / We Will Rock You / We Are The Champions / God Save The Queen
« Last Edit: January 17, 2018, 10:56:24 PM by DragonAttack »
...going along with Dragon Attack's Queen thread has been like taking a free class in Queen knowledge. Where else are you gonna find info like that?!

Nice. If I do a similar easy listening Toto, a can't miss would be These Chains.

Bohemian Rhapsody / Big Spender / We Will Rock You / We Are The Champions / God Save The Queen

That sequence from Wembley is amazing. Still remember that album as my first ever album purchased with my own money.

I have this Van Halen mix-CD playlist, which pretty much shows that I actually listen more for Alex Van Halen than Eddie. :lol I did not bother arranging the songs based on what is a good opener or not, I just ordered it sequentially because it is well paced.

Mean Street
Sinner's Swing
Unchained
Jump
Panama
Hot For Teacher
Girl Gone Bad
Dreams
Summer Nights
Love Walks In
5150
Poundcake
Judgment Day
Pleasure Dome
Right Now
316
Without You

A 3-CD set would have had CttE and The Revealing Science of God.   It was purely a value-for-money proposition.   Tales is my second favorite Yes album.  I LOVE that record.

Not bad, although it's difficult to mix songs from different albums. I try without thinking too much.

Foe (I can only see it as an opener)
Forced Entry
Passing
Salt
Coal
Waste Of Air
Bonneville
Mirage
Red

Whats the point of this topic if we can't discuss things? Everybody just dumping lists would be rather silly.

Not bad, although it's difficult to mix songs from different albums. I try without thinking too much.

I tried to get a pretty good representation of each album. The result was three songs from Bilateral (my favourite), one from Malina and two from the other albums. I like your list as well.

Foe (I can only see it as an opener)

Says the guy throwing Bonneville in the middle :P
I don't see Foe as an opener necessarily, it works really well as a standalone song. The shortened version as on their live album is actually what I would prefer on my mix-CD.

Foe might also work really well as the last song.  It would be hard to narrow Leprous down to one CD.  Forced Entry would have to be on it and it would take up a lot of time. I'd also like to include Chronic and Passing, which aren't real short. The Weight of Disaster, Rewind, The Flood, maybe Mirage.
