Your favorites of these classic U2 songs
« on: December 12, 2017, 06:30:01 PM »
You can vote for up to 5.

I voted for:

Sunday Bloody Sunday
New Year's Day
Bad
Where the Streets Have No Name
Bullet the Blue Sky

It felt weird not voting for any of the Achtung Baby tracks, since that is my favorite album by them, but none of those are among my favorites by U2 or even from that record.

I know I am not adding anything of value by saying this but...

I hate U2
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

I mostly don't like U2. Like for example, I am not down with most of the songs on that list, but here's some that I do love:

New years day
Sunday bloody sunday
Drowning man (my favorite U2 song and one of my favorite songs ever written)
Seconds
Like a song
Hold me, thrill me, kiss me, kill me.

I have two self made 'best ofs'.  All of these tracks are included.

I have a narrowed down, 'made for travelling with the wife' disc, that have all the listed songs, except for 'Bad'.

So....I can't vote for just five.

(one of those great lists that you make, 'the best concert opener ever', would have  'Where The Streets Have No Name' #1 that list for me)
...going along with Dragon Attack's Queen thread has been like taking a free class in Queen knowledge. Where else are you gonna find info like that?!

Streets is definitely the only one off that list that I’m not completely and totally sick of hearing. I love U2 but I’d be okay with them retiring every one of these songs.

With or Without You and One

Would have voted for All I Want is You if it was in the list.
I use my sig to pimp some bands from Italy! Check out Elvenking (Power / Folk metal), Folkstone (Rock / Medieval metal), Arcana Opera (Gothic/Noir/Heavy metal) and the beautiful voice of Elisa!

You missed some of my favorite songs:
All I Want Is You (perhaps Bono's best vocal; and  say what you want about the guy socially, personally, but back in the day, he was a vocal POWERHOUSE.
Ultraviolet (Light My Way).
City of Blinding Lights (on tour, that was epic).
Original Of The  Species.

Not really a U2 fan but I do really like these songs:

Sunday Bloody Sunday
New Year's Day
Pride
Where The Streets Have No Name
I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For
From a Mega Man Legends island jamming power metal to a Walrus listening to black metal, I like your story arc.

Sunday Bloody Sunday is one of my favorite early MTV era songs.  New Year's Day and the rest of War are pretty good, and I don't know Boy and October very well.  Pretty much everything from Joshua Tree to date has been pretentious and generally intolerable.

Ranked:
1.  Bullet the Blue Sky
2.  New Year's Day
3.  Pride
4.  Sunday Bloody Sunday
5.  Where the Streets Have No Name

6 would have been I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For if I could have one more.  Then probably I Will Follow.  Probably not hard to tell which era of the band I am more partial to.  :)  Joshua Tree is far and away my favorite album of theirs and would make one of my desert island disks (provided the list was long enough).  Then the pre-Joshua Tree albums, in no particular order.  Then...eh.  I kinda liked Rattle and Achtung, and lost interest after that.

Even though All I Want Is You is my favorite U2 song, as well as one of my favorite songs by anyone ever, I didn't include it here because it doesn't quite have the classic status that these songs here do.  All of these songs here are either so big that most people know them (by sound, even if they do not know the names) and/or ones the band have played pretty much non-stop at live concerts.

Drowning man (my favorite U2 song and one of my favorite songs ever written)

I love that song. Easily one of my favorites from their early years (and they have a lot of great songs from the early years).

(one of those great lists that you make, 'the best concert opener ever', would have  'Where The Streets Have No Name' #1 that list for me)

That list would be impossible to make because a) there are too many songs that are great openers (and too many bands), and b) I fear the voting would basically become a band popularity contest.

Personally, I think Streets works better late in the set rather than first.

You missed some of my favorite songs:
All I Want Is You (perhaps Bono's best vocal; and  say what you want about the guy socially, personally, but back in the day, he was a vocal POWERHOUSE.
Ultraviolet (Light My Way).

As stated above, All I Want Is You is my favorite U2 song, and Ultraviolet would be top 5. :hat

I had to youtube All I Want Is You. I didn't recognize the title, and after hearing it, I still don't recognize it.

That song charted well in Europe but did not chart well in North America. It gained some airplay in the US many years later only when it was included the soundtrack of the movie Reality Bites.

It didn't chart well on the pop charts, no, but MTV played the living daylights out of All I Want Is You the latter half of 1989.

I wasn't even that wild about With or Without You when it was released.  The only songs I knew by them prior were Pride, New Year's Day and the live version of Sunday Bloody Sunday from Red Rocks (thanks to all of the videos getting played on MTV), so when WOWY came out, it was like, oh, a wussbag song by that band that had a few good songs a few years ago. :lol :lol

Not until Where the Streets Have No Name was released as the 3rd single was I really sold on the band.  That was when my brother bought the cassette of TJT, which he played a lot when I was around and I liked most of it.

Seeing the Rattle and Hum movie in the theater with him a year later made me a fan for life. :coolio :hat

Too many missing from that list for me to really pick from. Of that list, I went with Bad, Bullet the Blue Sky and Vertigo.

But there's so many others that I would rate much higher than that list - specifically the title track from Unforgettable Fire, Wire, Until the End of the World, Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me Kill Me, Electrical Storm, several off the much-maligned Pop album, Magnificent and Fez/Being Born.
As a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.
