Which of these 2017 releases have you heard
« on: December 12, 2017, 04:09:10 PM »
These are all the 2017 releases I have bought so far.
Like them all, no major dissapointments so far.

Which have you heard, cast your vote...

Which do you like most.... comment

Do you find any glaring omissions based on the ones that are there... comment

Have ordered The Second Brightest Star and the Christmas Single... so those are not omitted

Have also bought some released earlier years and Marillion Misplaced Childhood special edition released this year but since they were not originally released 2017 they are not in the poll.

Winger Theater Forums........or WTF.  ;D
TAC got a higher score than me in the electronic round? Honestly, can I just drop out now? :lol

I've only heard To the Bone and The Source out of these. I wasn't aware half of these groups released albums this year.

I've got the Ayreon one, the Night Flight Orchestra one, and the Threshold one. Of those, Amber Galactic is probably my favorite.

Haven't heard a single one.

Same.  :lol  I heard a bit of Icefish, but not the whole thing.  What I heard didn't excite me.  Kind of like the names on the above list.

Anathema - The Optimist: Very disappointed in this album. They've been one of my favourite bands recently, but this one just didn't work for me.
Icefish - Human Hardware: Didn't really grab me
Ayreon - The Source: I need to listen to this a lot more. Really loved the opening track, but I can't remember much of the rest of it because I haven't listened to it enough yet.

I'm hardly an big Ayreon fan (although I do like a fair bit) but The Source juat feels like generic, by the numbers Ayreon. But, I could say that for most of his albums. They all sound so similar and so much sounds like something of another Ayreon album. Plus his albums are usually so long, it often feels like a chore.

That's just me though. I'm sure some people could say the same about some of my favourite bands  :lol

Threshold and Ayreon

Threshold was my #5 album of the year. Still listening to it weekly.

Ayreon was good, not great for me.

Of the lot, I've heard 6, Ayreon, Threshold, Anathema, SW, Subterrenea, and PoS. Of those, only Threshold really impressed me, and SW will probably get some future plays, he always makes for good driving music. PoS did nothing for me, Ayreon never really was my thing, I only heard the soundtrack cause I watched the movie, might have to give it another go, and Anathema was a major disappointment for me.

Top 5

1. Beatrix Players - Magnified
Debut album by a lovely trio of ladies. Piano, Cello and Voices form the basis of their sound, Chamber-pop-prog perhaps.... definitely for lovers of Kate Bush and Tori Amos
 https://youtu.be/5atLTyXizhA

2. Steven Wilson- To The Bone
Song oriented, shorter more poppier songs. Great album in the wein of 80-ties pop like Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush for instance. And Ninet Tayeb... what a voice
 https://youtu.be/cNTaFArEObU

3. Pain of Salvation - In the Passing Light of Day
Inspired by Daniels near death experience in the same hospital where he was born. I have loved all PoS albums this one more than the previous few though. A return to the harder sound.
 https://youtu.be/MreXYqelGPM

4. Doris Brendel & Lee Dunham - Eclectica
The latest album from the former voice of The Violet Hour is as the title says an ecletic mix... but what a mix. Got a little bit for everyone.
 https://youtu.be/uNaJChF21Ng

5. Kaipa - Children of the Sounds
Tinged with a lot of folk music the latest Kaips is as strong as their last few.

Threshold- Legends of the Shires
Tori Amos - Native invaders
Isildurs Bane & Steve Hogarth - Colours not Found in Nature

Ayreon - The Source
Peter Hammill - From The Trees
King Crimson - Heroes (EP)

Would not recommend the Subterranea soundtrack unlesd you are a huge fan of IQ and want everything.
I love the music but it only has one song (with Peter Nicholls)

Threshold, POS, Ayreon, The Night Flight Orchestra.

Was pretty underwhelmed with the Ayreon and POS.  The Night Flight I own and is wonderful.

Threshold, Night Flight Orchestra , Icefish, Big Big Train = heard

Liked the first two.

I have only listened to the Threshold a couple of times in bits and pieces lately and surprised how good it's sounding.
Everyone else, except Wolfking is wrong.

Why is Big Big Train's The Second Brightest Star never mentioned anywhere? Sure, it's a release of "leftovers", but it still contains some fantastic music!

Why has noone except me listened to Beatrix Players - Magnified?
It is a brilliant album... my favorite of the year and the winners of "Limelight award" at Prog Awards.

To The Bone - It's OK.  I'm not sure I like it as much as many on here do.

Grimspound - Good album....however IMO it's their weakest release since they changed their style on 'The Underfall Yard'.  The track 'Meadhall' is a absolute monster though.

My wife has 'Native invaders' but I've not really listened to it enough to pass comment.

Steven Wilson - To The Bone
Threshold - Legends of the Shires
Ayreon - The Source

To The Bone is my favorite Steven Wilson record yet. Legends of the Shires is an incredible album from Threshold which is great because I was wary of Damian suddenly getting the boot and Glynn of all people coming back but it works perfectly. The Source is kind of a weaker Ayreon album in my opinion but more enjoyable than Theory of Everything. As much as I love Tobias Sammet though I don't think he fits. His voice sticks out like a sore thumb and creates a grating contrast with all the others.

I'm a bad Anathema fan because I still haven't heard The Optimist and I really need to hear the new Pain of Salvation too.
From a Mega Man Legends island jamming power metal to a Walrus listening to black metal, I like your story arc.

Pain of Salvation, Steven Wilson, Big Big Train, and Night Flight Orchestra are the only ones I've heard.

Night Flight Orchestra is probably my favorite of the lot. It's just really catchy arena rock. Lots of fun to listen to.

Steven Wilson's is good, but kind of a step down from prior albums.

Pain of Salvation is good when I listen to it, but it doesn't make me want to listen to it more. Good album I guess, but not particularly great.

BBT is just kinda meh.

Then I think you would want to hear another one as well.... Beatrix Players - Magnified
Fantastic album for anyone who enjoys Tori Amos and Kate Bush
