« Reply #685 on: January 13, 2018, 07:12:59 PM »
I think there might be a correlation between a song's and my writeup's length :P

Kattoelox: Eminem - Offended
I don't really care much about political lyrics, and this seems to be partly a diss to Trump and to those that he offended throughout his career - ironically he uses a kid's melody for the chorus that ends up just being childish and bland. The beats are ok, and he's got a great flow, but that's about it for this song. 3/5

home: EDEN - drugs
I don't know much modern R&B - I like Frank Ocean's Channel ORANGE, it's a pretty varied and creative album, and this song seems to be in that vein, kinda. Sadly it's a style of music that I'm not that big on, and it being overplayed everywhere isn't helping either. So, the song feels a little like standard modern radio stuff, with some cool guitars and samples to make it a bit more original. In terms or structure, is pretty basic and kinda repetitive. I don't know, it feels the kind of music people put as background of sports videos or ads, I don't feel very compelled to listen to it on its own. 3/5

Nekov: Apparat - Candil de la Calle
This is very electronic, moody track - seems fitting as a soundtrack as you mentioned. I like the synths, they have a lovely sound and the electronics are on point. However, this feels pretty repetitive, and not in a good way - it feels like one long section instead of having several, the melodies are all very similar, and the instrumentation doesn't really vary much, just makes some breaks. I'd also wish there were some instrumental sections - vocals just aren't in balance with the rest of the music. 3.5/5

Luoto: Oddland - Still the Spirit Stays
So, progressive metal? Uuuhhhh ok I guess. It's got some solid melodies but it doesn't really feel any different to all the progressive metal out there - sure the break at 3:20 is cool and the solo is nice, and the structure is interesting, but this is a genre which I've gotten pretty tired of lately and don't even like that much - I'd be all over this if I did I'm sure. Maybe I'd have liked the song with sax more, I love that instrument. 3.5/5

ariich: Plini - Selenium Forest
Time for bedroomcore! I've only listened to Plini through some plug,dj sessions and some features on other albums and never really minded him much - as a friend described him, "twinkly twinkly guitar thingy", and that seemed appropriate. This song, however, is a little different - it has multiple sections, and goes through several moods. There's a part around min 3 that really reminds me of DMM, but for the rest of the song their styles differ a lot. There's quite a presence of guitar on this track, mostly on the right channel, that becomes a little annoying as it is fairly prominent on the mix and gets a tad repetitive. The mood is fairly nice, but sometimes it doesn't know if it wants to be dreamy and chill or somehow heavy - both don't really feel chill or really heavy, likely just bad mastering. So... it's ok I guess? I'm not really sold on this guy's style yet. 3.5/5

Evermind: The Mayan Factor - Focus Reborn
I swear I thought I had accidentally put a Porcupine Tree song instead of this one at first - the guitars and vocal melodies really feel like something from Stupid Dream or Deadwing. Anyways, to the song: I don't mind the rap at all, it doesn't really fit or maybe it's just the vocalist doesn't rap too well, but they don't detract at all. The first 3 minutes are like a pretty ballad, then a very cool instrumental section building up slowly to the chorus again. I like how the vocalist puts a bit more energy this time, giving the song a sense of progression. Around 6:30 there's the climax of the first half of the song, with the singer giving a great performance.

Then, a minute of silence :lol. I haven't figured out if the second half is a bonus track or part of the song - RYM days the former, discogs the latter, so who knows. Anyways, after that, it begins in an Anathema-ish way with the guitars and the vocals. Then it builds up again and it's cool, with less Porcupine Tree influence, but the chorus on this half doesn't feel as interesting as the first one nor the ending is as climatic.

So overall is a song that doesn't depart too much from its influences, and ironically when it does, the result isn't as interesting. I don't mind the rap on this track but I also feel it's unnecessary, as the vocalist doens't have a very good flow, and there's not enough groove to support it, so it ends up feeling a bit out of place in this kind of music. Nothing that detracts from the music, it just doesn't add anything to it. 3.5/5

Elite: Ibrahim Maalouf - Essentielles
Very curious song - pretty straightforward jazz-fusion with a rock attitude but some moments for a little of improvisation. It's short and simple but with lots of energy, I love the main motif here. The synths on the background are very cool as well. There isn't much to say, I like what I hear - it's not groundbreaking but it's far from bland and dull. Seems this album mixes a bit of arabic music so I'm looking forward to it. 4/5

Bolsters: Sia - Breathe Me
Although it starts like a typical ballad, it slowly evolves into something dense with a marimba, strings, electronics, guitars, and pianos. The vocal melodies are ok, so I'm glad the last third of the track is purely instrumental - it just works better that way. The climax is pretty nice. I think I may have heard some of her newer songs here and there and didn't like them much so this is a pleasant surprise. 4/5

Train of Naught: Tame Impala - Let It Happen
Yeah I can definitely hear the similarities with The Beatles but this is a very modern, almost electronic song. It's a little repetitive during the first half, so the extended instrumental bit was interesting, then going back to the main motif. It feels like a less experimental but far more enjoyable Animal Collective. I like the song's structure and how it just takes its time for each section, not rushing it. The atmosphere is very trippy and I like it. The inclusion of guitars on the second half definitely improves the whole thing. Took some time to grow on me but I'm enjoying it quite a bit now, just wished it had a better ending. 4/5

Tomislav95: Andrew Bird - Fake Palindromes
Very short song, but an effective one - I love the break with the drums and the strings. Melodies feel a bit like standard Indie Folk but somehow really work here so I don't mind. There's not much to say, I like this quite a bit, and from what I gather, seems one of the most standard songs on this record. 4/5

kingshmegland: Sarah McLachlan - Fumbling Towards Ecstasy (Live)
I've got to say this is a song that starts a little weak, but it slowly gets better and better, with the chorus being when I'm really starting to feel it. She's got a powerful voice and definitely puts on a lot of passion here. I like the first guitar solo, but the second one, holy shit, it's so damn intense and crazy! This is a pretty solid performance, and my only critique is that the calmer sections aren't very interesting - her voice doesn't really suit them either. Great song. +4/5

Parama: Sigh - Voices
This was uuhhhh... pretty weird to say the least :lol. It's like you put some chill beats with psychedelic synths and sampled vocals, a lonely piano, strings and a choir, and growls - feels like a twisted Tim Burton at times. And for the most part, it works! I'm not a big fan of their album In Somniphobia so this was a pleasant surprise - I was aware this album was pretty weird and experimental, but not in a way I'd find enjoyable, at least on this song (which seems it's a bonus track, huh). The guitar and piano solos are very nice and somehow fit this thing. I think I'm just not big on the growls, but they aren't very prominent and the rest of the music is pretty cool so whatever. +4/5

I sent what I was digging at the moment but I was totally aware that might be your reaction. To be fair Eminem and Kendrick are the only rap artists I can say I love, and there are only a few others I can actually say I'm a fam of. The album is... well, there are some really good songs on it, I'd still recommends it.

I have ideas more in line with something I sent earlier for the next round. Reading the writeups is useful.

Cool, in my opinion Let It Happen is definitely their milestone though, Currents (the album) didn't quite live up to it for me. But there are some other really good songs on it and the album cover is cool as fuck so I suggest you give it a try anyway.

I might actually send some rap next, there's one rapper I've been getting into a lot last year and I think the saculman might like it too. Will decide later today.

Question!

Quote from: Sacul
Up to two entries per artist in the same round. More than that, I'll only take into account the first two songs submitted. If it's a re-entry, I'll only accept the first track I receive.

Is that like, 2 entries per artist from all the participants, or can one person send 2 songs? :)
