Okay I think I'm on my 5th listen now, they're starting to sink in. I can safely say these two songs are safe for sure.

First off a song that's got strong Machine Head vibes in the vocals, which explains why he dug my Machine Head tune in the last roulette without really being into growls that much. Good instrumentation overall, and some pretty rad tempo changes here and there to spark things up, and the lead guitar produces some sweet melodies to top it off.

TAC, you and Tunguska by Darkest Hour made the cut. Time to relax for a bit

This next one is just a sick djent tune from someone I thought hated djent guitars. The song doesn't really stray far from its comfort zone but is diverse enough with the clean female vocals and deep growls in the djent sections, which is borderline post-metal at times. The ending had me kind of rethink my thoughts because I thought it was a slight drop-off, the vocals sounded a bit thin there and didn't quite match the epic guitars, but I've come around to it and it's now one of the best of the round. I am talking of course about Lunar Caustic by Obscure Sphinx.

Sacul, you stepped up, nice

Okay, one more today, I'm gonna keep it short but add the full write-up tomorrow. I know by the time I wake up you're asleep so just want to let you know you're through so you have a little more time to think about submissions as a reward for this great song. Parama with Lecter (Welcome) by Shade Empire, your best song yet! :corn Also not gonna go into genres since you'll probably trash my bad genre-recognition skills

EDIT: Top notch drumming, grand intro and I'm a huge fan of symphonic/orchestral elements in my metal if it doesn't go overboard. It alternates between sick guitar riffs taking the lead and subtle piano/orchestral stuff taking over while the guitars kind of take a backseat. I dig it, it's hella diverse for what it is. Also, the clean vocals in the chorus are good, but the vocals become especially great at the end.

And the Eryn Non Dae album was good, but dragged a bit. First two songs were both really good, but the second one took waay too long to really kick off. The middle 3 tracks actually had some really good moments, Scarlet Rising and Muto are among my favourites on first impression. Black Obsidian Pyre has some good stuff too but is probably the main reason I thought the album was a bit of a drag. The boring stuff on that track outweighs the few awesome moments. Will relisten for sho

I don't think anyone is doing hangmanen anymore, here's the names. If people still wanted to at least have something to do while I do the remaining write-ups, you can still guess the usernames that haven't been revealed yet.

Parama: Shade Empire - Lecter (Welcome)
Sacul: Obscure Sphinx - Lunar Caustic

??? Klone - Immaculate Desire
??? Sorority Noise - A Portrait Of

TAC: Darkest Hour - Tunguska
??? Foxing - The Medic
??? Underoath - Paper Lung
??? Queen - The Prophet's Song
Puppies_On_Acid: Oranssi Pazuzu - Hypnotisoitu Viharikous

7 left to save, 1 to eliminate. Right now thinking 4 today, 2 tomorrow morning and the final 2 tomorrow evening.

I'll do 2 of them as soon as possible (prob within 20 minutes) and the other 2 in a few hours.

I had some doubts about this band, didn't really seem like my cup of tea. However, I noticed they have some really resembling similarities with Deftones and some of the post-hardcore stuff I listen to on occasion. The chorus especially is very strong in and empowers me in a way mostly just Deftones manage to do. But the growly ending section came as a completely positive surprise to me, very cool guitarwork alongside it too. Overall great effort, probably your best song so far!

Underoath - Paper Lung is through. Nice tune Lorenzo!

Secondly a band that I was fully expecting to receive since it's a pretty obvious hole in my banned list. This guy's vocals were always a hit/miss for me since they are so unique, it could very well be considered a hole in the music market since I cannot imagine any other prog band doing these kind of vocals this effectively. The atmosphere as a whole I get off this is a sort of euphoric futuristic vibe, a really strange but interesting mix. And the Contortionist-like layered vocals (I know I know, TC is newer than Cynic) are awesome. One of my favourite songs of the round for sure, though the competition was pretty damn high this round.

Congrats Luke, The Space for This by Cynic made it through with ease :metal

Wow, after Norma Jean winning a round in Parama's roulette, another great result with a similar band. I hear Deftones too in that song and I sent it for that reason.

When I was at Leprous concert last month I listened to some great songs during intervals between bands and one of them was by Klone, but I didn't discover the title of the song from a person in the audience.  It was a metal song, certainly not from the latest album which I tried to listen on Spotify. I might check out the band soon.

This one was odd. I remember after 1 listen I was very impressed, then on the second listen I had raised expectations that it didn't meet and was then slightly disappointed, but I came around to it. I still feel like it's a very unique song for them though because what I've heard was way heavier instrumentally. This one drives on the melodies though, and that's completely fine because the melodies are fucking A, simple but moving song. Despite the kind of one-sided structure, they build up layers very smoothly with the piano, orchestration and layered guitars as the song progresses. The centerpoint is the singer for sure though, no denying that.

uh oh... you're in. Aesthetics was great.

I was told there were similarities with Gojira but more than anything, I hear Maynard and a bit of Chris Cornell in the vocals. Along with it, some slow plodding guitarwork that caught my attention from the start. This one didn't really grow on me after the first listen, but was a solid entry throughout the whole round. I think I would have enjoyed it more if they had some faster stuff mixed in, or something to make it worth the 6 minutes a bit more, because I feel that it kind of overstays its welcome here and there. Still, not a bad one this one.

Rich, you're through with Immaculate Desire by Klone. :tup

I kind of agree that the song overstays its welcome a little, though I mist also admit that having sern the song live greatly improved my opinion on the song. The slow, heavy stuff along with the chorus line in the vocals are really heavy then. Glad it’s good enough to still be in the game though :)

This one was safe pretty much since the beginning but still ranked near the bottom because of how consistently good this round was. The avant-garde elements here are lovely and work very well with the dissonant sound. Kind of reminds me of Thy Catafalque (at this point it's pretty obvious which band I'm talking about) but a slightly less interesting and diverse Thy Catafalque at that. I love the juxtaposition between the sheer cold of the vocals / tearing riffs and the dreamy synths in the background. It was definitely one of the most interesting songs of the round.

Puppies_On_Acid, not to worry, you're still in.

This one had enjoyable stuff on it but at the same time left me kinda cold. The vocals sounded very dull to me, a style I'm not generally used to. However, the instrumentals had a very cool Oh Hiroshima meets The Fall of Troy (Döppelganger) sort of vibe to them, making it quite an epic song for its short duration. So in the end what it came down to for me was deciding whether I thought the vocals were too 'emo' or too one note for me. But I made up my mind days ago, because I've picked my round's least favourite since the very first listen and it still hasn't changed.

home, you might have won the first 2 rounds, but A Portrait Of by Sorority Noise was a mixed bag. You through though :tup

Yeah I know that feeling. I remember at the time of seeing Oiseaux de Proie by Alcest I thought it was the best song ever. Then now, I still love it a lot, but I'm aware that I'm biased

EDIT: Oh yeah I only have 2 songs in yet, I hope people can send before Christmas but if not, I'm not gonna hold you liable for not sending on Christmas so no consequences, I won't be listening then either to be honest. So next round will obv. take a couple days longer.

Train, I think you would enjoy the other tracks on that album more.
You might be right, Oranssi Pazuzu does indeed look like something that would grow on me more over time

Time to wrap this up guys, sorry, got caught away last night.

Tomislav and Stadler, two completely different songs. One sent me an indie rock tune with some emo tendencies, with vocals that were kind of grating and never grew on me after all these listens. That is to say, the lighter softer part of the vocals were kind of enjoyable, the stronger / more broken sounding vocals weren't. The song ended up being one I wanted to skip but never did fort the sake of balancing out the listens between all the songs. Feels like something you need to connect with, but if you don't, it's just there. The other sent me a classic band I believe to have received last roulette as well. It was Killer Queen, I liked it. It had great energy and was all around fun. This song traveled a different route but still was a fun and overall rocking sound. But then somewhere in the middle it gets to this acappella part that last FOREVER, it takes up at least 2 and a half minutes and completely takes me out of the song. It sucks because one of my favourite bands (Between the Buried and Me) has paid huge homages to Queen and is heavily influenced by them, and some of the similarities I do recognize and admire. In the end, it just doesn't stick with me very well here somehow.

So I am in a similar situation as last round. Do I pick the song that didn't completely grab me but at the same time was a pretty inoffensive effort, or do I pick the song that had some better moments but had one major element that felt extremely tacky and takes me out of it completely?

Gonna go with the former here, sorry Stadler. In jingle.boy's words, no soup for you. I am probably gonna get shit from the fogey team for kicking out someone that sent The Prophet's Song, but that's tastes for you.

1. Underoath - Paper Lung
2. Shade Empire - Lecter (Welcome)
3. Shattered Skies - Aesthetics
4. Cynic - The Space for This
5. Obscure Sphinx - Lunar Caustic
6. Darkest Hour - Tunsugka
7. Klone - Immaculate Desire
8. Oranssi Pazuzu - Hypnotisoitu Viharukous
9. Sorority Noise - A Portrait Of
10. Foxing - The Medic

11. Queen - The Prophet's Song

I have 3 songs in, 7 more to go. Exciting times!

Cool cool cool. I'm back and got 6 out of 10 songs, so 4 more. But, I'm fully aware people are busier during holidays so don't worry taking a couple days more, just don't forget about the roulette completely. Would still like them around Wednesday/Thursday at latest.

Tomorrow's a busy day for me, so gonna start my first listen of the songs I have tonight so I can catch up on the remaining 4 whenever I get them without consuming too much time. I know I said Thursday too but preferably tomorrow cause for once there is a roulette waiting list, so I'd like to be a bit more timely. Gonna send out reminder PMs to the roulette equivalent of the big 4 and hopefully enjoy this first listen of the current 6 songs.

Hope you all had a wonderful Christmas! :metal :corn I did (and will continue to do so tomorrow cause why not)
