Your favorites of these Tom Petty songs

Sorry to steal some of Mr. Schmevin's thunder.  But I thought it might be cool to do a last remembrance of Mr. Petty.  So vote your fave' five.

You Got Luck - Love the anger in this one
Mary Jane's Last Dance - Very evocative imagery
Don't Do Me Like That - Nostalgia
Runnin' down a Dream - Just a fun song
American Girl -

True to tradition for these threads, my favorite Tom Petty song is missing from the list; Don't Come Around Here No More

Refugee -- My introduction to him.  This and Another Brick in the Wall were all over the radio, and were the first time I can recall being drawn to "rock" of any sort.
Stop Draggin' My Heart Around -- Well, I love Stevie Nicks, so there's that.  Also, some really interesting, almost dissonant harmonies that are really captivating.
Free Fallin -- This is an interesting song.  I'm not really sure what it is about.  But it somehow manages to evoke just carefree, good feelings as well as some sort of melancholy and loss at the same time.
You Got Lucky -- Haunting video and song.  I had this one recorded on a VHS, along with some others like Bark at the Moon, Jump, Bringin' on the Heartbreak, and Thriller.
And:
Runnin' down a Dream - Just a fun song
Yeah.

American Girl is literally the only Tom Petty song I like.

American Girl is my favourite Petty song.

It reminds me of a fun time with my ex years ago.

I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

I listened to a lot of TP back in the day, though I never owned any of his albums. Con't honestly say I'd go out of my way to listen to any of his stuff now, and it would probably be channel-change time if something of this came up on the radio. To participate, I'd vote for Refugee and American Girl.

Picked four... Mary Jane, Refugee, Breakdown, and Free Fallin'... fifth is reserved for You Don't Know How It Feels!
I don't want MP playing with DT unless they were making a drummer change. If they let MM go and bring back MP, then fine, but no guest appearance please.

haha, I could have taken American Girl or Won't Back Down over Free Fallin'. But I don't think it's that bad (was never a HUGE Petty fan, but I like some songs). The chorus is fun to hear in the summer.

Sure Kev, no problem with that. I'm not into Petty in any way, but I do like those older classic songs a lot.

While I respect your right to have this opinion, I don't understand how one can hate Free Fallin'. It's like saying you hate waterfalls and sunshine and fresh air.

Got to say I love most of the songs on your list bosk1.    My all-time favorite is It's Good To Be King.

I love TP and the Heartbreakers.  Of the list, I chose The Waiting but mostly for nostalgic reasons, not because I think it is his best song.

TP has too many great songs to list them all.  In my opinion, many of his best songs are the ones that never got airplay and most people who aren't fans don't know even exist.

Don't Fade On Me, You Wreck Me, A Higher Place [Wildflowers]
Saving Grace [Highway Companion]
A Woman In Love (It's Not Me), A Thing About You [Hard Promises]
Room At the Top, Swingin, Billy the Kid [Echo]
Lover's Touch, Something Good Coming, First Flash of Freedom, Running Man's Bible, The Trip to Pirate's Cove, I Should Have Known It [Mojo]

The guy was a consummate writer who knew exactly how to place a hook in a tune.  Do yourself a huge favor and if you aren't familiar with his back catalogue, give some of them a spin.  Lots of untapped genius here.

Mudcrutch also has some kick ass tunes worth checking into.

RIP TP   :'(

Refugee is like the perfect song. I really love that smooth Hammond with the slow-to-fast / fast-to-slow Leslie cutting through.

Mary Jane is my favorite, then Refugee and then Even The Losers.

I despise the Petty/Lynne stuff.  I'm sorry to piss on the parade, but I think Petty is WAY overrated.   I have the Greatest Hits and the Playback box set, so I'm familiar with the work, but it's basic, solid rock and roll, nothing more, and when it veered into being serious and "hip", as with the Petty solo stuff, it lost me.

Admittedly, I was never a bit fan either.  I enjoyed the stuff that would get radio/MTV play, but not enough to ever feel the need to take a deeper dive into his material.  I have the 2 disk hits anthology, and I'm happy with that, but have no desire to really dig deeper.

^^^ Some of the early stuff on the Playback box is pretty good, though.   I like the early, hungry, underdog rock.  I thought it rang false when you had a critical and cultural darling like Tom Petty - playing alongside Dylan, Harrison, and Orbison, anointed rock heroes - singing about being an "underdog".

Wildflowers is great from start to finish.  Other than that, I have never really dug deep with Petty either, and have no desire to.  I am good with having Wildflowers and the many hits.

Stop Draggin' and American Girl are the only songs I actually like.

Stop Draggin' My Heart Around -- Well, I love Stevie Nicks, so there's that.  Also, some really interesting, almost dissonant harmonies that are really captivating.
Indeed. He does a sort of Lindsay Buckingham thing. Always works great alongside Stevie Nicks's voice.

Runnin' Down a Dream (DOPE AS FUCK, love this one)
Breakdown (this was MY intro to Mister Petty - didn't like the song at first, but it was a grower)

Honorable mentions:  You Don't Know How It Feels, Don't Come Around Here No More
