John McLaughlin and the Mahavishnu Orchestra
« on: November 12, 2017, 12:02:46 PM »
Couldn't find an extant thread  (and somewhat shocked by that fact).

Any other fans here? Glad I have the opportunity to see McLaughlin tonight on his "retirement " tour  (with Jimmy Herring).
Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

Mahavishnu's first is the best.

I'm partial to "Birds of Fire" myself but you can't go wrong with the early Mahavishnu Orchestra records.

Another fan here. The first two albums are great. I'd probably give the nod to Birds of Fire.

What a coincidence, yesterday for the first time I *really* listened to the Mahavishnu Orchestra vinyl standing in my shelf for over 4 years now. It's very complex stuff, so naturally I still have to get into it, but I like it. JMcL is a crazy good guitarist, and his band is insane. Still, I prefer other Jazz-influenced prog, especially UK. Their debut album is spinning right now and it never fails to blow me away.

Love these guys.

Never got to see them live but I did catch Greg Bendian's Mahavishnu Project a few times. Nice consolation prize I guess.

bump.

Rest in peace Rick Laird, bassist of Mahavishnu Orchestra.

He even played on the Jerry Goodman/Jan Hammer record "Like Children."

Underrated bassist for sure. What a band.
