Tech people, need your help
« on: November 09, 2017, 10:28:38 AM »
My father has an SD card which I suspect might be failing but there are some important videos on there I've been trying to remove so he can free up space on the card (and so I can format it before further use). The videos are actually of me at my graduate recital at college a few years ago and he's the only one with them. I've copied two of the four videos. The other two get stuck partially through transfer, stay that way for about 10-15 minutes and then say 'cannot read from source.' So I cannot get these off the card.

If anybody knows a way to get these files off somehow, I would really, really appreciate it, because if these are lost I'll never ever see them again and I've not dealt with SD card troubleshooting much. I'm not transferring via USB, it's in an SD card reader port on my laptop. One of them gets halfway through, the other about 1/3 through. Is there a third party program I can use to forcefully transfer these?

I had some success with Roadkil's Unstoppable Copy. I only used it for a standard HDD, so I have no idea how an SD card would work, but it just chugs away at the disk until it can copy every bit. In my case I think it took three or four days, but that was for a 2tb drive nearly full.

Well, I don't have 3-4 days, but there's only 2 files about a couple hundred megs each... I'll try that. Thanks EB.

EDIT: The worst part is the videos are still watchable on the SD card... except I get about halfway through each video and they lock up for a while, and won't progress until I manually click after the stopped point, at which they resume. Ugh.

Weird, I had something similar happen right before my SD card shat the bed.  Not exactly the same, but where I was getting a weird read error sometimes, but not all the time and then eventually it just stopped working completely.  I don't have much to offer for help, not sure if EB's recommendation works on SD cards as well as that's a bit different technology than a hard disk, but worth a try.

Since that's the case, I'd try a different card reader and/or computer first.

This is the third computer I've tried it on unfortunately. And EB's suggestion sadly did not help, but I did try it :)

UPDATE: Got a call from the old man. I guess he did copy them years ago and he found them, so thankfully, my vids are safe. In the 4.5 years it's been since I played that recital I've never seen the videos, so this is a huge relief to me. Whew. Thanks for the help folks. I'm going to get him a new SD card now.

Out of curiosity what was the problem with RK's UC?

It just wouldn't progress. I didn't get to run it long, maybe 20 minutes tops, but it didn't get past 1 MB transferred or make any progress. After I got the call I just breathed a sigh of relief and turned it off. Maybe it would've worked at some point, but the problem was solved (kinda) by then. Thanks for the suggestion, I'll be sure to use it when any one of my hard drives laying around here gives me an issue. Never heard of this program before.

Yeah, my recollection is that it flies right through normal files and then stops when it hits a bad sector. At some point it manages to copy it and then moves on. My drive was full of media, so it'd copy 6 episodes in 1 minute and then spend 20 on the 7th. I just installed it on a shop computer and left for the weekend. Anyway, glad it worked out.

Bruh, please tell me you're gonna copy these videos to at least two other sources for safe keeping so this never happens again.

Glad you were able to preserve the videos Kattelox, as an aside, I've been burned a couple of times in the past with losing precious videos and other data. I now have 3 backup locations that I update once a week. I think I own a total of some 25 TB total.

I love how all you guys fell for his "my dad" and "my recital" story and rushed to help him save a couple grainy, hand-held videos of this chick he met one night at a concert doing things she doesn't regret but is praying do not see an IP address from "Youporn" (is that what it's called?) anytime in the near future.    :)

Hey, they're safe, that's what matters  :lol

I have a few old drives I haven't touched in ages but are in good shape so I've copied them over.
