90's Dream Theater is always a winner.

Some of the Porcupine Tree albums.

Opeth's Blackwater Park.

Big Big Train's Folklore.

Lately (as in the last year or so) I've been playing White Moth Black Butterfly a lot.

Ugh....fuck these guys.

Nice way to post your go to band also Tim.

 :lol

I watched endless hours of Wiggles when my kids were young.

I didn't hate it. :lol

Same here

Sorry, but I'm in that group too.  I even met them once with my kid.  Murray (the purple one) was very cool.

Murray is the Red one. Jeff is the Purple one. :P

They rebooted and they had a cute woman come in for the role of yellow shirt. She recently left the group, too.

She has a great voice too. My youngest daughter is just now getting into them, so it’s on a lot lol.

I probably haven't listened to a single Dream Theater song in the past decade. I'm a piece of trash.

But to answer your question. Bands I can listen to in any mood, situation.

Metallica
Judas Priest
Larkin Poe
Beyond The Black
Bask
Elvis Presley
A good chunk of Devin Townsend because Devin Townsend
Woods of Ypres

Woods of Ypres

Their last album in particular was really fantastic, such a tragedy what happened and that they weren't able to follow-up on it.

I'm with you, EV, in that my list is long and varied.

At this point in my life, virtually any 'classic-rock' band will serve as a 'go-to' pick, if for no other reason than my overall listening time is rather limited compared to my life pre-children.

There was a point in time where I thought I never needed to hear 'the hits' by so many bands ever again, but these days, when a song like "Surrender" or "Jailbreak" comes on the radio, it sound SO good to my ears.

It'll come as no surprise that for me, this is Katatonia, by quite a large margin.

Other bands can also be go to bands to a lesser extent.  Leprous is probably next up.  Arcturus, Riverside.  Certainly Dream Theater and Rush. For the last week the new Tesseract album has had me listening to the whole catalog, but in general they're a band I do reach for often.

Ok, a different way of answering this question:

Go-to bands overall:

Katatonia
Nevermore
Opeth

Go-to bands in the past 10-15 years:

All Ends
Autumn
Kingfisher Sky

Go-to-bands in the past couple years:

Chelsea Wolfe
Spiritbox
TesseracT

It's been Metallica since the mid '90s. Pretty much anything they put out. And I'll grab any live recording of theirs any time. Good ol' faithful.

Over the years, there's been others:
Green Day
"Weird Al" Yankovic
311
Dream Theater
Neal Morse
The Lone Bellow
Styx
Genesis

Some of the above have fallen off... some of them are newer and I've been going to often... but none have or ever will compare to Metallica.
I don't want MP playing with DT unless they were making a drummer change. If they let MM go and bring back MP, then fine, but no guest appearance please.

When I am doing work around the house or in the garage, I typically put on bands that I don't feel compelled to listen closely to. So I gravitate toward 80s pop metal. Warrant, Skid Row, Cinderella, etc., etc. I know all the tunes, and can just keep doing my thing without being distracted by something that makes me really engaged.

I mean, sure, I know all the 90s DT stuff, but because it is so active, it's not good for background music. So I put on more simple stuff.

Not so much bands really, but genres in general.  If I don't have any new releases to listen to, I'll usually listen to either 90s britpop or old school rap on shuffle.  I also have a local radio station that plays 80s-90s rap, funk and dance music, I'll throw that on.  And I have an app that plays that stuff too.

If it's cold, cloudy or rainy, I play shoegaze and/or post rock on shuffle.

The very soul of what was once real music is now lost in a digital quagmire of emotionless sonic madness.
