A quiet end to 2017 for me, music-wise.
« on: September 29, 2017, 01:21:06 PM »
This is a very unusual year for me. Usually, there is some album coming in the last third of the year that I am looking forward to. But not this year. And there's nothing in the planned releases that I'm particularly interested in. So 2017 has peaked and ended rather early for me, music-wise. But it's yielded seven magnificent albums (unless there's something from earlier in the year that I will end up picking up between now and December).

Blackfield: Blackfield V
Big Big Train: Grimspound, and then The Second Brightest Star
The Tangent: The Slow Rust of Forgotten Machinery
Rikard Sjoblom's Gungfly: On Her Journey to the Sun
Steven Wilson: To the Bone
Mostly Autumn: Sight of Day

So the year started quietly, then had a big burst of momentum in the summer, and it will end quietly by the looks of things. Just to point out, too, that these are not the only albums I've bought this year. I'm just focusing on the albums actually released this year.

I'm waiting for new Europe album very much, seems to be very interesting after what I've heard from the single They released. Sons Of Apollo, but I don't want to be dissapointed so I don't have many high hopes for that one, I'm just hoping that it will be fine and I will be satisfied. Also, I'm hoping that Chimaira will come back and give us some new music in 2018, they are setting up a show in December which has been sold out in two months after information about it.  And new albums from 2017... I had to think about that but definitly new Decapitated - Anticult was spinning at my house quite often after release.

This has been a VERY quiet year for me.  To date, there has been not even a single album I was interested in buying.  But now that we're at the end of the year, there are a few that I am looking at picking up:  Morsefest 2015, Sons of Apollo, Vuur, Trivium, and The Dark Element.

New Trivium, of course! I forgot about that one, also Machine Head had announced a new album, am I right? I'm not sure if it will be still in 2017 though...

Yeah, I think I'm probably tapped out as well for 2017.  I mean I heard a fair amount of good stuff from bands I like (Ayreon, Big Wreck, Stone Sour, Rise Against, Zac Brown Band, Ed Sheeran, etc.) and even Nickelback released a surprisingly good album.  Still did not reach the highs that 2016 had.  I still got Trivium to look forward to and I'll probably listen to Sons of Apollo as a curio.  Aside from that, that is all until 2018 hits and I can look forward to hear solo albums from both Mark Tremonti and Myles Kennedy.

Edit: Oh wait, Lindsey Stirling will be releasing a Christmas album in late October.  I might as well take a listen to that.

Machine Head is January the last I read. Already got tickets to their 'Evening With' in Chicago in February.

There are 3 big albums I am waiting for this year:

Galactic Cowboys
Vuur
Sons Of Apollo
beul ni teh efac = Lube In The Face / That has to be wrong.  :lol / EDIT: Oh, it's Blue! I'm an idiot.
Pardon the interruption, but I just had to run in and celebrate the majesty of Lube in the Face as highest moment in roulette history

No instant classics this year for me, like Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp A Butterfly or David Bowie's Blackstar, but Steven Wilson's To The Bone I think is pretty great. It's the closest I've come to being blown away, even though I feel SW's album isn't quite in the same league as the aforementioned albums. To me those two albums were instant classics.

My highlights of the year so far:

Ayreon - The Source
Rage - Seasons of the Black
Eluveitie - Evocation II - Pantheon

And I put a lot of faith in the upcoming Elvenking album.
I use my sig to pimp some bands from Italy! Check out Elvenking (Power / Folk metal), Folkstone (Rock / Medieval metal), Arcana Opera (Gothic/Noir/Heavy metal) and the beautiful voice of Elisa!

Yes, it's pretty brilliant. Dare I say one of their best albums. Mastodon's Emperor of sand will most likely turn out to be the album of the years for me, though.

Two more albums coming out this year that I'll check out but am not particularly excited about - the new Weezer and the Sons of Apollo debut. The year was good, but the last few months will be quiet.

I'm still looking forward to hear if the new Blade Runner 2049 score will be any good, and Dimmu Borgir are supposed to drop an album this year too.

The new albums by Steven Wilson, Styx and Blackfield were all really good, and the new Arcade Fire was very good as well.  The Roger Waters album had its moments. but was mostly disappointing.

I haven't listened to much else new stuff that came out this year.

Compared to 2016 it's been a quiet year for me so far. 2016 was such a great year with DT, Haken, NMB, Devin Townsend, Evergrey, Gojira, Animals as Leaders, Periphery, Redemption

Best 2017 albums so far: Caligula's Horse, Soen, Mastodon

Looking forward to: SOA & Vuur
