it's even better when you see him live and it's so much more depth to the music.

Stads, I'm totally fine with you scoring the songs however you see fit. I'm deliberately sending music that's probably outside of what you would normally listen to both because our tastes differ somewhat and I think it's interesting to get people's thoughts on stuff outside of their main musical wheelhouse (I hope this is OK), so I don't really expect to win or get great scores every round.

Completely agree.  I want to expand my music horizons.

Dude, I'm fine with that!  I'm really enjoying it.  The one thing I don't want to do is just be "knee jerk" and dismiss anything without giving it a fair shake, and I didn't feel I did that in the first round.  Keep it coming!

Oh, by the way, I have no hard rule (he said "hard"... hehehehehehe) about repeat bands.  There are plenty of bands - Crimson, Genesis, Fleetwood Mac, Deep Purple - with different eras and different members that don't sound at all alike, so I'll put the limit at three, as I don't want eight songs from the same band, but if anyone wants to use a band twice, that's your risk.

Round 5: Song by the band you MOST think should be the very next inductee in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (the reasonableness of your believe may - or may not - factor into the score!)

Looking for a little more direction on this one.  The general point is to send you music that you aren't already familiar with.  If I were to send you a Rush song, you'd think I was nuts.  But - this one is for the band you *most* think should be the next inductee.  What if I think it's Maiden, a band whose entire discography you have?  Do you want us to use that "most" criteria, regardless of whether you're familiar with the band, for this one round?  And then you'll evaluate it based on whether you like the song we chose and how much you agree with the Hall of Fame selection?  Or should it be "the band you most think should be the next inductee that I don't already listen to?"

I'm pretty sure I'm going to lose this round, since I can't imagine there being a band that meets the Hall of Fame criteria that I know about and you don't.

I hear ya, I mean I got a lot of ideas for bands that should be in, but finding a song of theirs I like enough to warrant sending in a roulette is tricky. Most of the bands that should be in now, either Stadler probably knows them backwards and forwards (Maiden, Motorhead, Judas Priest, Slayer) or their bands from other sub genres where finding a likeable song will be tough. I think I've narrowed it down to two bands which just might work...

I think it's the band that you think deserves... that complies with the bannination list.   I hear you on Maiden; honestly, I can't think of a song by them I haven't heard (that includes Bruce, Steve and Adrian).  The Cars, I have everything they've ever done, plus all of Ocasek's solo stuff and Ben Orr's one solo album (killer, by the way).    But those might be the exception; I'm huge into Priest, but I have never heard a Ripper tune, and I'm not huge into Halford or Tipton's solo stuff.  So there's that.  Big into Motorhead, but honestly only familiar with the Fast Eddie/Robo material.  I get just as much jazz hearing a song by a band I (thought I) knew, than I do some band I've never heard from before.

As for "whether I agree", no, I'm not going to torpedo your score if you send me Morrissey/The Smiths; even though I think they are very overrated, I get why they are in the conversation.    It just has to be reasonable; don't send me something off one of Peter Criss's solo albums and try to tell me he belongs in the HoF as a solo artist.

There is no "list", but the stuff from the first post starting the roulette.  If you can't tell, I'm going overboard to put the ball in you guys' court. I want to hear what you have to offer; I don't want to just tell you what to send.  You've done amazing so far, so no reason to stop.

Oh no, I'm not asking you to tell me what to send. I just didn't know what bannination is - something to do with the Hall of Fame, some Twitter lingo that I'm not familiar with (since you're now a member)... :) I guess it means the rules of the roulette, so I think I'm good.

Kingshmegland:    The Pineapple Thief - “Show A Little Love”:     I liked this.  I think.   To be honest, I don’t really know what to make of it.  It’s certainly another King sleeper, as it got better the more I listened to it, but it seemed to hit a peak.   I took the lyrics to be about a failing relationship that was on the cusp of something momentous, so the tension of the music was fitting, but that tension has to go somewhere, and it didn’t.  It didn’t factor into the score, but I contrast that with the song that played after, “The Final Thing Om Your Mind”, which was a more dynamic piece, reminiscent of Marillion.   I think I want to hear more.   7.5

Antigoon:   Anderson.paak “Come Down”:   I’ll give you credit:  FAR and away the most challenging submissions of this roulette have come from Antigoon, and I mean that in a good way.    I had my doubts when it started, and repeated “my n***a’s” didn’t help (it seemed self-conscious).   It’s not really my first choice of music, but as I listened, I could see two things that really endeared itself to me:  one, it channeled all the right things about James Brown, and two, I really dig the concept of four guys standing there, facing each other, playing something like that that has swagger and groove.   Probably not something I’ll revisit again, thus the score, but I’m better for having heard it, and I’m pleased that there is music like this out there.   Four guys in a room…   7

Jingle.boy:  Pretty Maids – “Pandemonium”:   Well, it starts with Barack Obama talking, in quotes, about what is presumably climate change, so Jingle is capped at a fucking five right out the box.    Ok, but we’re here to be fair and give the benefit of the doubt.   Love the “Dio-esque” keyboard figure into some slamming hard rock, so we’re headed in the right direction…  then the vocals come in.  I toyed with a score of 0, but thought that would be too harsh, so we crept up to 1 or 2, but I still had to tough it out…. next thing I know, I’m bobbing my head along and even singing the chorus.    I was impressed by the singer; that’s I think the opening song of the set, and unless he’s accustomed to blowing his wad on the first lap of the race, it’s a pretty impressive performance (and my assumption proved true with the second song I.N.V.U.)  I liked this a lot; not the best of the group (that’s Lethean, this round) but pretty goddamn solid hard rock performed by guys that clearly have been doing this for a while and doing it pretty well.  I’d listen to this again, in a heartbeat (and for the record, the first sentence is totally facetious).   8

TAC:  Loudness – “Black Wall”:   I had of course heard of Loudness, but to be honest, I can’t say that I’ve ever heard them before this.  I know – or at least I think – they opened for Van Halen for a while, which is a double edged sword; VH is not known for taking headlining acts on tour with them (Private Life?).   Musically it was good, and the singer sounds reminiscent of Klaus Meine, which is a certain plus, but it didn’t really gel.   I had a hard time with the lyricism of the lyrics; I’m not saying that to be xenophobic, but near the end it just didn’t seem mellifluous, and so to me it reduced to sounding generic.  7

Mosh:  Iced Earth – “Burning Times”:  Someone should introduce these guys to a band called Judas Priest; they might like them.   Ha! I make myself laugh.   It’s clear that they’ve heard their share of Priest, even down to the static bass player dressed all in black hiding out near the drum riser.     I loved the guitars, particularly the harmony lines and the solo, and while the bulk of the vocals aren’t to my liking, the final “In every way you area a sinner!” at full Rob Halford, is a nice touch.   It’s not enough to bring it up from what I consider NWOBHM mediocrity, which is not a good thing for a band from Tampa, Florida.   7

Lonestar:  IQ - “Guiding Light”:  This is clearly prog; face paint!    I feel bad, because this might come off harsher than I intend, but this just seems so… derivative.  Peter Gabriel singing a Phil-era Genesis song with Marillion as his backing group.   The guitar solo was Steve Rothery playing with Wind-era Genesis behind him, and the keyboard solo was Mark Kelly’s best Tony Banks patch… and finally, the figure at 6:58 has been bugging me for two days because I know it’s a quote from somewhere and I can’t place.  It’s still well done, well played, but as I get older I am really getting sensitive to the idea that “this has been done before”.   Though I must say, the instrumental break was very well done; I’d listen to that again.  If the vocals at the end were stronger, it might have scored higher; the great singers have another voice to go to when the crescendo hits (Fish:  Heart of Lothian; Peter: The Musical Box; Jon Anderson: Heart of the Sunrise) but Peter Nicholls didn’t seem to have that extra gear.    7.5

Elite: Gary Clark, Jr. – “When My Train Pulls In”:   I’ve heard a lot about Gary Clark, Jr., and I’ve heard snippets of his playing here and there, and always very impressed.  This doesn’t change that, but it never seems to elevate above the genre.  I’m not the hugest blues guy, but I like what the respected greats have done with the blues.   This falls victim to that to a degree; none of the big names – past or present – were great singers, but I feel like the raspy voiced blues god has been done to death (Hendrix, SRV, Joe Perry, Joe Bonamassa) and this aspect brings this down.   Guy’s a real talent, though, and it gets the score it does for the fact that the framework for that excellence feels like it’s held together with baling wire and duct tape.   7.5

I knew it was a 7. Again, I'm honestly not trying to win this, but being basically the same age, I just want to fill in some of the blanks that you may have missed. To me, Loud Live Alive is an amazing 80's live album. If you can get past the vocals and appreciate the great live capture, of course. If you can't I understand.

I'm going to send another 7 next round, but it's a track from an album that is severely forgotten by time.

v_clortho:  Devin Townsend – “Deep Peace”:   I am absolutely confounded by Hevy Devy.    My first exposure to him was the singing on Steve Vai’s “Sex and Religion”, and it totally turned me off to the guy (though I suppose I should revisit…).   Couple that with the skullet pictures and the crazy faces after he lost the locks, and there was little to bring me back in the fold.  Then, I saw a YouTube video where he wrote and recorded a song in real time, and I was FASCINATED by that; it was, to me, so bold and so transparent.  Recently, for some odd reason, I clicked on the song excerpts on the website from “Transcendence” and was really impressed.  This just continued the trend.   It’s serious music, with heavy emotional impact, and yet… “Keep singing, I have to find the right patch!” I don’t think you let that kind of distraction in and still pull off that song unless that talent is just YOU, and that music is just IN you.    I was really blown away by this performance, and feel like it may not have been him at his best, but it was really HIM.   That is also the best use of growls I’ve ever heard (if you can call it that; at the seven minute mark, plus or minus).     9.5

Lethean:  Ayreon – “Day 2: Isolation”:    Holy crap.  I loved everything about this.  Best song of the round, maybe, so far, best song of the roulette.  Well, “Deep Peace” might be that, but the whole package of this was just at another level.  I loved the concept.  I loved the music.  I loved the execution.  I loved the attention to detail.   This was really over-the-top (as was the other Ayreon song) and pretentious, in the way that the best King Crimson and ELP is pretentious, but for me, at no time did it ever seem pretentious in a cloying, twee way (Love Beach) and never did it seem to overwhelm the actual music (in the way The Astonishing seemed to for me).    9.5

Home:  Karnivool – “Themata”:  Well, color me stupid.  I always thought Karnivool was a nu-metal-ish band ala Korn or Five Finger Death Punch.   I thought this was good; thought provoking, and musically interesting.  I wasn’t ever able to get what I would consider a full grip on the song meaning, and the notion that “the world is a lie” has the potential to be rather cliché, but in the context of the song it works.   I can say the same for Ian Kenny’s vocals; not usually a fan of the reedy tremulous voice he uses (or the falsetto) but again, in the context of the song, with the relentlessness of the music, it works.    The only thing I didn’t care for is the sort of trite Kiss-like ending to the song; seemed out of place.  8

@ Mosh, Burning Times has to be one of my least favorite IE tracks. With so many great tracks, that one does not compute.
would have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Winger Theater Forums........or WTF.  ;D
TAC got a higher score than me in the electronic round? Honestly, can I just drop out now? :lol

I really like Karnivool as a band.  Great dynamics.
I don't like country music, but I don't mean to denigrate those who do. And for the people who like country music, denigrate means 'put down'.” - Bob Newhart
So wait, we're spelling it wrong and king is spelling it right? What is going on here? :lol -- BlobVanDam

I'm sorry, and you've touched on the absolute hardest part of this for me (and why I'm either never going to do another one, or I'm going to get right back in line and do one next week!)   I get it, and there are a couple bands here that I've never heard, and I feel like if it was just a different song, it might click.  Loudness (I LOVE the tone of the singer's voice; like I said, very Klaus Meine, who is one of my favorites).  Gary Clark, Jr. (who can flat out PLAY).  And especially, The Pineapple Thief (I even said as much, and cheated and listened to another song of theirs).

I have to say, though, good music all around, and I'm still reeling from the Devin Townsend performance.  WOW that was good.   By the way, anyone who has "By A Thread"; who's the woman on "Kingdom"?  Is that Anneke van Giersbergen (or whatever her name is; I can't look her up at this moment, and I mean no disrespect to her, I just can't remember how to spell her name).

But hey, wasn’t Ayreon sent already?

I said this above (Beavis joke and all):

"Oh, by the way, I have no hard rule (he said "hard"... hehehehehehe) about repeat bands.  There are plenty of bands - Crimson, Genesis, Fleetwood Mac, Deep Purple - with different eras and different members that don't sound at all alike, so I'll put the limit at three, as I don't want eight songs from the same band, but if anyone wants to use a band twice, that's your risk."
