Bands that don't sing in English
« on: September 14, 2017, 01:54:46 PM »
Hey!

So I am curious if you guys have recommendations of good rock/metal bands that generally sing in a language other than English. Besides Rammstein.

Preferably no death or black metal or soft rock/pop music.

If you could maybe link to a youtube link too, that would be awesome. All non-English languages are welcome!

Well, allow me to introduce you to a band I love, an underground act from Italy that has a unique blend of metal, folk, rock and gothic elements, all combined in an unique way with awesome lyrics that are difficult even for italians!

Here you may get to know Arcana Opera, don't let the very minor and occasional harsh vocals here and there deny you the pleasure to experience the singer's fenomenal voice.

This is a big epic, a 7 minute oriental journey, Caffè Marco Polo:

This is a more straightforward but still complex tune, La Danza della Forca (The Dance of the Gallows):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LK5YVQr3M4o

And this is from their debut album, marketed as a solo album by the singer who wrote it all by himself, and that would later would adopt the name of the album (Arcana Opera) for the band... an anthemic piece as you can get in latin:

I use my sig to pimp some bands from Italy! Check out Elvenking (Power / Folk metal), Folkstone (Rock / Medieval metal), Arcana Opera (Gothic/Noir/Heavy metal) and the beautiful voice of Elisa!

The only one I know of is Makine, which is a Turkish industrial metal band for which Kevin Moore (yes, that Kevin Moore) worked on the album's pre-production in 2010.  It's actually very good!

Try Solstafir, an Icelandic Metal/... band. I'm honestly not sure how I should describe their style, especially because it varies a lot from album to album. They're generally more atmospheric than in-your-face and I love most of what they do.

Here are some suggestions:
Fjara: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A6j7mUxGz20 (hardly a metal track, but very atmospheric and beautiful)
Laegnetti: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R8n8Uy5KmvU (some metal, some very-mch-not-metal parts)
Djakninn: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZhf98IydQ0 (the intro/ending are not actually parts of the song, but they fit really well. This is very "rough" for lack of a better word, and mostly really heavy)
Midaftann: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQkGUzIiIc4 (no guitars, just piano, strings and vocals. Absolutely beautiful, though).

I love this song!  :metal but all I know about Solstafir is that they exist, and that they made this song, sooner or later I should decide to check them out.

Couple of quick questions: since I like Wardruna, in case you know them, how may I be expected to like Solstafir as well? is the clean singing of Fjara the rule or the exception?

I've never heard of Wardruna, and I only know the last 3 albums by Solstafir. On those, most of the singing is clean, and there's no growls or anything, it's more "emotional screaming" when it's not clean singing. If you like Fjara, probably check out "Otta" (the album, or the song, preferably both ;)). The other songs on the album Fjara is on are less atmospheric and more heavy than Fjara. That doesn't mean it's not an excellent album, though.

Equilibrium
Finntroll
Tyr (has a lot of songs in English but the ones that aren't are pretty obvious by the title)
Heljareyga (Tyr's lead singer's solo album, completely in Faroese)
Korpiklaani (some songs in English but like, all their songs are about the woods and drinking so it doesn't matter I guess)

A lot of Rhapsody songs have bits and pieces of Latin and Italian, they did a single in like 5 different languages with Christopher Lee too; some songs are entirely Italian

Ok, thanks! and if you wanna check out Wardruna, which is not off topic since the singing is not english anyway, I believe this song is a good place to start:

Moonsorrow from Finland, probably my fave band for the last ten years.
Epic is the only word to describe them, black/death/folk/prog influenced.

They have lots of long songs, longest being around the 30 min mark.
This one is pretty much sums up the band and their style in 19:30 of brilliance.

Boogarins from Brazil.  Psych indie rock.  They've become one of my favorite bands.

I will add Kvelertak, they sing in Norwegian. Also, their music is pretty interesting, some label it as black and roll.
Negura Bunget, Romanian black metal. Their album OM is loved among atmospheric black metal fans.
Can't believe Parama didn't mention Thy Catafalque :P lyrics in Hungarian.

I wave but they don't slow down...

The Swedish version of Carolus Rex by Sabaton is excellent, if you enjoy symphonic/power metal. The album is available in both English and Swedish and I actually prefer the Swedish version.
