Futurama (outdated) Thread - Woop Woop Woop!
« on: June 28, 2017, 03:43:25 AM »
Apologies if there is already a Futurama thread - I tried to use the search, but encountered issues.

So I was a massive fan back in the day - but it was always a hard show to follow in the UK without Sky.  So I managed to get hold of the original run on DVD and absolutely loved it.  Smartly written geeky and intelligent stuff.  This was while it was off air (cancelled?) with the last episode being the brilliant 'The Devil's Hands are Idle Playthings'.     After a gap of 5 years it returned with 4 movie long episodes - I brought them all, but to be honest something felt off - maybe it was the having to tell a story 4 times longer, but generally I was a bit Meh to all 4.   That was where I stopped, I was aware the show returned again back in it's normal format - but never got the chance to see them and never got round to buying the DVD's...

Now I notice the entire show is available to watch on Now TV - every episode.  So I'm soon to embark on watching those 52 new episodes.   So for people who have watching them, what expectations should I have?   Also any general Fururama chat welcome.

I thought the movies were very patchy, but it was better once it returned to a series. The original run is probably better overall and the characterizations are a bit stronger, but the rest are definitely worth watching, and there are some absolute classics in there. I actually think the finale of the second run is even better than The Devil's Hands are Idle Playthings.

Yep. I think the only party in the MP/DT situation that hasn't moved on is DTF.

If say the first run on the second through 4th seasons were the best.  The second run was very good but like Blob said a little spotty.

I agree with pretty much all of this. I'd say that there's some absolutely wonderful material in the movies, but it's definitely patchy. There were always weaker episodes, but I guess in smaller chunks it's easier to ignore those and remember how brilliant the best episodes are, whereas extended over feature length movies they all end up with great stuff and less good stuff.

The 2nd run was definitely solid and again some great episodes. Not quite as superb perhaps, but not too far off.

Futurama came at a time when the Simpsons went downhill and it became my favorite series for a while. I loved most of the first run and the movies were okay, some good, some not so good. Haven't seen the second run but it seems like I have to look for it.

I enjoy the 2nd run of Futurama. It has, what I feel is, the best emotional episode of Futurama.

The best part of it all...it can still be re-re-born.

I started last night with 'Rebirth'.   A bit of a rushed episode, but the twist at the end made it solid enough.

On a Futurama scale outta 10 where 'Amazon Women in the Mood' & 'Problem with Popplers' get a 10.  At the other end 'That's Lobstertainment' & 'A Pharaoh to Remember' get a  1.....I'd give Rebirth a middling 5.

Continued though a few more episodes over the weekend...

In-A-Gadda-Da-Leela - This was a really good episode.  Zapp is pretty much always great, he's on pure sleaze mode here.  8/10

Attack of the Killer App - This had a great start with the eye-pod jokes, but why-oh-why Susan Boil.   5/10

Proposition Infinity - 'and Ghosts and Horses'.   Decent enough episode 6/10.

The Duh-Vinci Code - Bad episode.  Does that annoying thing of exaggerating a character trait to fuel the plot, in this case it's Fry's stupidity.  The plot is a total mess, not many of the jokes land.  2/10.

Lethal Inspection - Cute episode this.  A Hermes and Bender roadtrip, nice paced story with a good payoff.  8/10.

Are they counting the app game that was just released like a week ago?
Either way, if it's not a TV show or movie, it doesn't even count. I hate when a show hypes that it's returning, only to be a comic book or something.

My bet is that if it's not a movie or a tv-show it doesn't interest me.

Well, actually Cohen specifically tried to de-hype: "Keep your expectations modest and you will be pleased, possibly."

So I'm keeping my expectations modest. The only thing I can think of that would really excite me would be a Telltale-style episodic video game. On the humourous end of things they did a great job with Tales from the Borderlands, so I could see them doing something great with Futurama. I'm not expecting it to be that, though, so I doubt I'll have much interest.

I mean, unless it's a TV show or movie, my expectations are "I literally could not care less what this is". I can't lower my expectations far enough for anything else to not be disappointing.

Its a video game akin to South Park. That'd be sweet

So I'm done with the first 13 episodes or Series 7 as it's called here.

Bonafide Classics - 10/10.

- Prisoner of Benda.

Great Episodes

- In-A-Gadda-Da-Leela.
- The Late Phillip J Fry.
- Lethal Inspection.

Solid Episodes.

- The Mutants are Revolting.
- Rebirth.
- Lrrreconcilable Ndndifferences
- That Darn Katz.
- Attack of the Killer App.
- Proposition Infinity

Poor Episodes.

- Clockwork Origin.
- The Duh-Vinci Code

Crap.

- The Futurama Holiday Spectacular

Overall this was an improvement on the films in my opinion.   It's not up to the level it was when it went of air, but there is plenty to enjoy.   'Prisoner of Benda' was Futurama at it's brilliant best, straight into the top 10 episodes of all time.  On the flipside of the coin 'Holiday Spectacular' has found a home as the worst episode of the show, seriously what was that!

In Germany it's called Season 5 and Amazon delivered yesterday. So far I've only seen Rebirth and thought it was a solid episode.

I'm now watched the second new batch of 13 episode (called series 8 in the UK).

This was a consistently average bunch of episodes.  There were no episodes I'd class as 'great' and definitely no 'classics' - on the flip-side there were no real duds either.  If I had to pick the better episodes they were probably 'Law & Oricle', 'Cold Warriors' and 'Benderama'.    The funniest part was 'Action Delivery Force' from the multi episode 'Reincarnation'.

Overall the lack of standout episodes made this a weaker series than the previous one.
