I'm a wannabe singer (always loved singing and I actually took lessons for some years), so I have a definite answer for the singer spot: Bruce Dickinson.

I'm not musically intelligent enough for the other instruments so I just happen to like musicians from bands I love... I'd say for the other spots:

Guitars: JP
Bass: Steve Harris
Drums: Mike Terrana just because his solos are so badass
I use my sig to pimp some bands from Italy! Check out Elvenking (Power / Folk metal), Folkstone (Rock / Medieval metal), Arcana Opera (Gothic/Noir/Heavy metal) and the beautiful voice of Elisa!

Bruce, Petrucci, Geddy and Neil. If I were to choose a keyboard player as well, I'd go with Jordan.

Singer: Geoff Tate, as long as you can travel back in time to about 1993 and bump him off before he turns into a colossal turnip.
Guitarist: Marty Friedman on lead, James Hetfield playing rhythm.
Bass: Geddy Lee or Random Jon Poole (of various Ginger Wildheart projects. Also in the Cardiacs but mostly as a guitar player).
Drums: Neil Peart.

This is actually kind of easy.  The only one that is even a debate is bass.

Singer:   Freddie Mercury
Guitar: Ritchie Blackmore
Bass: Chris Squire
Drums: Neal Peart

I agree, picking a drummer is hard.  I pick Peart because I see him as the Jack Nicklaus of drums, changed everything.  Portnoy would be Tiger Woods, started fast and faded.  But sometimes Gavin does things that make me use a lot of profanity because I can hardly stand how good it is.

I'm not so much thinking of this as my "favourite" in each category (although they're all "one of..."), but it's more a case of who would it be cool to see together as a supergroup. Fantasy band draft time!

Vocals: David Longdon
Guitar: Bryan Josh
Bass: Dave Meros
Drums: Nick Mason

My only undisputed choice at any instrument would be Michael Schenker on guitar. Rock/Metal guitar would never exist in its current form without his influence on practically everyone in the genre'.

On vocals it would probably be mid 90's-onward Ray Alder. Of course, I have a huge place in my heart for the big 3 (Dickinson, Dio and Halford). Geoff Tate from '83 to '93 also ranks very highly for me.

Bass is a tough one. If John Myung had a more prominent sound/presence in DT I would probably choose him. Steve Harris could be an easy choice. Joey Vera is amazing in everything that I've ever heard him do.

Drums would probably be MP. GH with Porcupine Tree is amazing.
All of this has happened before and all of this will happen again

Right, keyboards:  this is the hardest of all, but by a nose (over Richard Christopher Wakeman) would be Tony Banks.

Singer - Phil Anselmo: Racist stage antics aside, in his prime, his screams were pure power and his cleans were beautiful.

Guitarist - John Petrucci: The perfect blend of melodic and technical. Everything that a lead guitarist should strive to be.

Bassist - Cliff Burton: This one is more personal with me being a bassist myself, and Cliff is the biggest reason why I started playing the instrument. In a genre that usually puts the bass in the background, Cliff made his playing stand out, adding fills and flair to his basslines and taking solos. I know it doesn't get much love on these forums, but the first time I heard (Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth was a revelation. It showed me that in metal, a bass could be used for more than doubling the rhythm guitar and could have it's own identity. Cliff Burton helped shape who I am as a bassist and as a musician today.

Drummer - Mike Portnoy: Nobody makes their hi-hats sing like Portnoy. I could listen to his isolated drum parts and still enjoy them as if they were a full song.

Bonus musician!!!

 Keyboard - Jordan Rudess: He's not called the Wizard for nothing. His technique is unmatched, his compositional and orchestration skills are amazing, and his mind for technology is revolutionizing music applications.

Guitar = Paul Gilbert
Bass = Billy Sheehan
Drums = Mike Portnoy

Kaos, do you mean "Russell" as in Russell Allen (no bueno) or Jack Russell (voice like velvet)?

These "choose one artist" threads are very hard, i could list a lot of people in each category. I'm not going to think about this too hard...

Singer: Freddie Mercury, Mike Patton
Guitarist: Steve Lukather, Alex Lifeson
Bass: Geddy Lee, Les Claypool, Billy Sheehan
Drums: Neil Peart.

Russell Allen. I know you're not a big fan Stads and the best Russell is not the aggressive Russell (AMOB). Listen to V (album) or the Odyssey (song) and his voice is amazing. Also, the guy is beast live.

I saw him with AMOB and with TSO for the Christmas show.  MUCH better with TSO even though he only sang a few songs.

Vocals: Ian Kenny (Karnivool)
Guitars: Alex Lifeson, Chris DeGarmo
Bass: Jon Stockman (Karnivool)
Drums: Tomas Haake (Meshuggah)
Keys: Diego Tejeida (Haken)

I think DeGarmo and Lifeson would be an interesting duo.  Stockman drives a lot of the riffing in Karnivool, so I would be interested to hear what sort of textures the Lifeson and DeGarmo duo would create on top of that.

Totally impossible to narrow the singers down to one - even 3 is hard, anyway,

Singers (in order of discovering them): Dio, Marco Hietala, James LaBrie
Guitar: Ritchie Blackmore
Bass: John Myung
Drums: Mike Mangini, Ed Warby

I just have to add

Keys: Jordan Rudess

Composers in rock/metal/prog: John Petrucci and Arjen Lucassen
