As one of the finalists of your previous mini-roulette, I'm in for exactly one round of this madness.

Question: what happens if the secondary judge already knows one or more songs that've been submitted? Do they still rank them according to their tastes or these songs won't be included in the secondary judge's rankings?

Sending in a minute.
This first band is Soen very cool swingy jazz fusion kinda stuff.

Yeah they should rate them same as anything else

The whole secondary judge thing is more a bonus sort of thing than anything else but I still wanna see it turn out okay

I would've said that everyone should sent power metal in the round where I'm the secondary judge, but obviously now that there are 11 participants, that round won't happen anyway.

ill also discourage you from sending songs to fit the secondary judge's taste rather than mine and if I see that happening I'll probably just cut the secondary judge thing entirely tbh because at the end of the day this is still my roumette

I think you should keep it in the dark. Like, don't tell everyone who the secondary judge will be, just that person. That person can send you the results and you can post them. That way you can avoid people from catering to someone else's taste.

It'll prob be obvious who it is once they don't participate in hangman (since obviously the secondary judge will know all the songs) but yeah I'll probably do that

tad bit funny that of the 9 songs i have so far 5 of them are from bands i've heard at least something from before (and tomislav got rejected with a 6th band)

i'm not like, notably familiar with any of them though so
should be fun  :corn

Well, I've already spoiled you some stuff on the plug.dj sessions so I'll see how much I have to scrap the barrel and send in a while.

EDIT: Sent some jazz.

Oh go on then. I don't have any confidence that I'll get as far as I did in Tomi's but I'll give it a go. Might get past the first round this time!

i'm through one listen of the 11 songs i've been sent so far, stadler still hasn't sent but he did confirm he wants to play over PM so he has until saturday-ish to submit. and i'm still leaving signups open until saturday so if anyone else wants to join that's totally fine by me.

from what i have received... this is an interesting variety of songs, to say the least  :P i dunno if there's any of the songs in particular that strike me as most likely to get cut but that could either mean i liked them all or there were a fair number i disliked, i'll leave it for you to decide  :corn

Round 0 First Impressions

If there’s one thing I do genuinely like it’s the vocals, they fit really well with the style and the singer has a unique enough voice on top of that, and it’s not like most of this really sounds bad to my ears.

I guess one thing is that it does sound sufficiently dense and I can appreciate it for that; some stuff in this vein seems to lose depth and feels really thin and lacking in punch for it but that’s not the case here.

When the vocals enter, hmm… on one hand I’m generally not a huge fan of this style but it works well here. The vibe of the song and the vocals play off each other well & they go together nicely on the larger-sounding chorus as well.

I can see this being fairly catchy, a lot more so than the other song I’ve heard from them.

I feel like the quiet parts are a bit underwhelming compared to the louder moments but that might be because I like the loud bits quite a lot.

Knowing what I know about this band I went into this prepared for the worst but what I found was surprisingly solid and actually really diverse considering the genre, so props for that if nothing else.

The heavier bits right near the end also feel kind of like part of a different song spliced into this one, the guitar tone seems completely different and it creates a weird effect. Which I kind of like, but it’s also a bit distracting.

While I do think all the riffs and melodies are pretty solid on their own, the lack of uniqueness does take away from it a little. Just a little, though, since overall I still do enjoy this.

And the vocals are… completely buried. Just the way I like it, ‘cause that means the atmosphere is dense as heck. Like seriously I’m mostly indifferent on this style of vocals so burying them is totally fine by me.

There’s not really a ton of emotional depth here, which is what I tend to like in music like this, but it’s got a lot of fun jams and especially those basslines are fun to listen to.

I have to say that I am really digging this first heavy riff though. It has this dense and ominous sound that I quite like.

I do appreciate that it keeps things dynamic & that main riff is pretty great but having it hammered in to this extent might have been a bit overkill, even with the song not being so long.

I guess people sent pretty obscure songs considering your enourmous banned list so I'm just guessing a letter: I.  Also most of those tid-bits seems pretty positive.
