Rules:
1. Send songs via PM. I’d prefer mp3 downloads but youtube links are fine. Spotify links are not allowed, and you will be asked to resubmit. Basically I’d like to have a link from which I can download mp3s for free, is the primary requirement.
2. The banned list is color-coded for your convenience.
Red means bands I have heard enough from to know I dislike them in general.
Orange means bands I don’t actively listen to or own music from, but find generally alright.
Teal means bands I have looked into and plan to get an album from, or have an album but haven’t listened to extensively yet.
Yellow means bands I like and own music from but don’t quite love.
Green means one of my favorites.
3. In the interest of variety, if the same artist is sent multiple times in one round, only the first two submissions of the artist will be accepted. If the same song is sent by multiple people, only the first submission will be accepted.
4. I reserve the right to reject any song or artist not on the banlist, most likely because I either know the specific song or the band probably should be on my banlist (which I will update if so).
5. The maximum song length for the preliminary round is 10 minutes; no exceptions. The maximum song length for standard rounds is 12 minutes; and once during the course of the roulette each player may send one song longer than this, but no longer than 20 minutes.

Roulette Structure:
There will be 10 players for the main roulette. I will run one preliminary round accepting as many contestants that want to enter, but I will be cutting down to the top 10 players at the end of that round. Preliminary round points WILL factor into your overall score.

The main roulette will be 10 standard rounds, with one twist; each round, one player on the playerlist will also receive and be judging the songs, and ranking them according to their preference. They will not be affecting the roulette score of any participant however; but at the end of the 10th round, the player with the highest secondary judge score will be given a pass into the final round, if and only if they are not already in the final round through normal roulette score.

The top three players at the end of round 10 will proceed to the final round, which is an EP round. If there is a distinct secondary judge top scorer, they will also proceed, meaning the final round will have either 3 or 4 players.

The secondary judge’s scoring system will be as follows:

5 points for favorite song
3 points for second favorite song
2 points for third favorite song

This is to equalize all the secondary judging scores and ensure a fair chance for everyone.

The EP round rules are as follows:
1.   At least 30 minutes, and no more than 40 minutes
2.   Must use at least 4 different artists
3.   No more than two songs per artist, and the total length per artist must be no more than 12 minutes.
4.   Bonus points will be applied as follows; each full point a player has over the lowest-scoring player in the EP round will be converted to a quarter point bonus. So if one player scores 80, and another 82.5, the second player will receive +0.5 bonus points for the EP round.
5.   Song lengths will factor into their portion of the overall EP song score. This will be scored out of 30.
6.   Flow, variety, and cohesiveness of the EP (the EP score) will be out of 10.

Roulette Numeric Score Grading Scale

10: One of the best songs I've ever heard.
9: A fantastic song that I'll return to frequently.
8: A great song that I'll probably keep spinning.
7: Good, but not especially impressive; I may or may not check out the album.
6: Decent, but not particularly memorable or not something I'd keep listening to.
5: Pretty average, but not unpleasant to listen to.
4: Fairly mediocre, generic or uninspired.
3: Evokes little to no positive feelings and a fair bit of negative ones.
2: Yeah, you're definitely getting cut for sending me something this bad.
1: You're probably trolling if you get a score this low.
0: Merzbow is on the banned list.

Tastes:
Rather than describing the kind of music I like, I figure it’d be better to just give examples of stuff I’ve been listening to lately.

Black metal has been my biggest stint as of late and I’ve been pushing in a lot of different directions with it. Spectral Lore is probably my best find of last year, and a good example of both the more progressive and more atmospheric sides of the genre, and I’ve been looking into a lot of the dissonant stuff like Deathspell Omega as of late. As for the weirder/more avant-garde stuff, Aenaon has been a pretty strong fascination.

As far as progressive metal goes, my preferred style has tended away from dream theater-esque bands and towards bands that emphasize the metal a lot more.  Hacride and The Hirsch Effekt are two great examples of this. Indukti are not so extreme but another good example of what I’ve been into. Wilderun is also worth bringing up for the folkier style while still containing a lot of the same metal that does it for me. Dissona is probably the closest to a dream theater-like band that I’ve really enjoyed lately, but even then they still have a harder edge and different sound to them.

For music leaning really heavily on atmosphere, I’ve been enjoying both the serene beauty of Eluvium and the crushing bleakness of Menace Ruine. It’s totally possible that these are both flukes and ambient/drone can be really hit and miss for me but the best stuff can be pretty potent when it works for me.

Rock in general only tends to work for me when it’s emotionally charged. The Antlers were my favorite find of early 2017 and The Receiving End of Sirens is shaping up to be that for spring 2017. Though I’ve also been getting back into Amplifier’s The Octopus, most for the more sinister vibes it carries. And even though they’re not a band I’m spinning that much lately, I’d be remiss to not mention Oceansize somewhere in here. Still one of my favorites & nobody else sounds quite like them.

And of course I’d be remiss to not mention my love for progressive metal that has a sludge/post-metal lean. East of the Wall is a band I will never shut up about and The Ocean have probably my favorite song of anything I found last year. I’ve also been on-and-off obsessed with El Drugstore, though I’ve failed to find anything similar that hits the same niche… yet.

A few other scattered styles mostly disconnected from the rest. The Flight of Sleipnir have a pretty compelling doom/black metal hybrid going on that I find really enjoyable, and I’ve been checking out more post-metal like Callisto lately.

Pop and electronic are genres I haven’t really checked out much from lately, but Lorde and Julia Holter remain staples for me for sure. Though a display of raw power like Sia provides can also work if well-executed.

My only further recommendations are to NOT send me straight up folk music, soundtrack music, video game music, hardcore electronic stuff, etc. I will straight-up reject soundtracks and the others are all pretty likely to not get many points from me, as historically shown in my previous roulettes. A little outside of my comfort zone might be fine but go way too far out of it and I’ll either be annoyed or bored. I’m not looking to suddenly become a hip-hop fan or a connoisseur of Chinese folk music or the like. Because I won’t be either of those things ever, most likely.

bumping this because it kind of fell off the top of the section  :lol
still room for at least three more players (if we don't hit 10 then we'll just cut down the number of rounds and not have a prelim at all, that's fine by me) & four of the people who've joined haven't sent me a song yet either. feel free to take your time on that for now but i am going to be a lot pushier about sending songs than the last few hosts

It's been a while since I participated in one so I'll join. One question though, are the secondary scores being revealed? Because if that's your plan I can see a scenario where someone gives a low score knowing it can benefit them.

I'll send you a song tonight when I'm home and can go through my MP3 library, or sooner if I find something in youtube.
