One of my favorite things about Stephen Wright shows is the look on the faces of the people who aren't laughing.
"Owners of dogs will have noticed that, if you provide them with food and water and shelter and affection, they will think you are God. Whereas owners of cats are compelled to realize that, if you provide them with food and water and affection, they draw the conclusion that they are God.” — Christopher Hitchens

Don't think Dana Carvey could ever be forgiven for The Master Of Disguise...

Not even Waynes World makes up for it.

Well I assume this thread is about Stand Up, and i love his Stand Up routine. So there.

All time in no order :

Seinfeld
Robin Williams
Stewart Lee
Jasper Carott
Jack Dee ( when he was good )
Larry David ( his writing mainly )

Not so many modern comedians.

Milton Jones is ok.

But. I hate hate hate the following :

Ricky Gervais
Bill Hicks
George Carlin
Louis CK

For my 2c - going on stage in front of your target demographic and just

swearing and being filthy for 90 minutes is not clever or witty.

If it was hard - there wouldn't be SO MANY comics who are just dirty.

I've yet to discover a good, clean modern comedian in flippin years.

I've seen Robin Williams swear plenty in his stand up. I'm just about convinced you are from another planet.

George Carlin
Lewis Black
Sam Kinison
John Pinette
Eddie Izzard
Mitch Hedberg
Dice
Seinfeld
Robin Williams
Billy Crystal
Chris Rock

After them it's not even worth mentioning. I'm sure I missed a few but not many as good as the ones I mentioned.

A few of you guys mentioned Stephen Wright. I haven't seen him in years. Does he still work?

Last thing I saw him do was "The guy on the couch" in the movie Half Baked

Brian he still does shows.  Not as frequently as most comedians but he's out there.

Can't believe I forgot Robin Williams. I think it's become he doesn't directly come to mind when I think of comedians; I think of him as more an actor, or just overall entertainer.

George Carlin
Louis CK
Robin Williams
Dave Chappelle

and the newest seems like it could be Sebastian Maniscalco, haven't seen enough for him to make my list, but what I saw I really liked.
As I previously posted Sebastian is brilliant. Lots of stuff on line, saw him live last year. brilliant

I've only watched one of his specials, as well as his appearance on Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee (which was awesome), but I really enjoy Sebastian Maniscalco.

Another guy that I haven't seen mentioned is Gary Gulman. I don't love every single bit that he does, but he has some really good stuff.

Side note: If you're a fan of Jerry Seinfeld, or comedians in general, and you haven't watched just about every episode of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, you're missing out.

Not really into it anymore but a few I liked in the past:
Dice
Denis Leary (No Cure For Cancer album!)
Eddie Murphy (second album Comedian, esp. the barbecue bit)
Rudy Ray Moore/Dolemite
Jeff Foxworthy's "You Might Be A Redneck" bit was good
Sam Kinison
Rita Rudner

Starting to dig into some of the newer ones on Netflix.

Bill Burr is one I have been a big fan of for years.  He is beyond hysterical.

I stumbled across some Nikki Glaser clips when she was on Conan over the years, and thought she was a riot, so I watched her Bangin' special. Wow. I was dying laughing the whole time.  She manages to pull off the "female comedian talking explicitly about sex thing" really well (which is not easy, IMO).

I also saw Jimmy Carr, who was pretty funny.  I am guessing some hate his laugh, but as long as he doesn't overdo it, it is fine.  Very funny guy.

Jimmy Carr is amazing. He's offensive and tasteless as hell, but he pulls it off.

I like Russell Peters. Maybe my being Asian has something to do with connecting to his brand of humor. Chappelle is good too.

She's one of the few in that category that I don't think is bad.

I also have been liking Taylor Tomlinson.

And Jim Gaffigan is spectacularly funny

I saw that in a drive-in theater when it came out.  20-year old me thought it was hilarious.  I may have to re-watch it to see if 30+ years older me still thinks so.

George Carlin's A Place for My Stuff is still my all-time favorite comedy.

I heard that on his podcast. He seems really thrilled to perform and throw the opening pitch there.
