Search function
« on: March 28, 2017, 02:35:55 PM »
This is not so much a suggestion as a venting of frustration at how bonkers the search feature can be at times. I've got to grips with how you have to be very specific in your searches, including things like capital letters and punctuation. However, I just tried searching for a Scenes From A Hat thread (obviously not the one just started in GD), and it came up, in red: "Each word must contain at least two characters". Which means you cannot search for anything containing the indefinite article "A". So I just tried "Scenes From Hat", and it decided to include the letters "hat", even when they appear in words like "that". I honestly don't even know...

I understand that it's probably an automated feature, but it's just insane how hard it is sometimes to search for something in this vast database of forum posts.

Google can often be an easier way to find old threads. eg: site:dreamtheaterforums.org "scenes from a hat" finds these 2:

whoa definitely did not know that, and agreed the search function is terrible here and just experienced how bad it is a few minutes ago actually.

Sometimes it just plain doesn't give what you are looking for in the results, too, even if it exists. I can't remember specifically what I was looking for, but a year or so ago I tried searching for one of my own posts and was not getting it in search results. I was using the advanced search and was sure I was searching for the correct words or term. I was getting other posts in results but not the one I was looking for. I ended up going through my own post history on my profile using CTRL+F (since I knew roughly when I made the post and I haven't made all that many posts here) and when I found it, it did contain the exact word/term that I was using to search for it. :\

I'll have to keep in mind the Google search trick in the future.

Google Dorks are awesome. It's how I found a 174 page pdf on the Dream Theater site called A Walk Through the Band. It looks like it's basically all of the Wikipedia articles smashed together.

Why does it not search thread titles? That seems so weird to me.

You can set it to search thread titles only.

Click "Advanced Search" and then tick the box that says "Search in topic subjects only"

It's kind of hidden, though. First you need to perform a blank search, which will give you an "advanced search" option.

I click the magnifying glass to get to the advanced search. Does that show up on every forum theme?

Yep. I think the only party in the MP/DT situation that hasn't moved on is DTF.

I just click Search at the top of this page and then the link for Advanced Search. Yours isn't like that?

Okay - that is way helpful. I didn't realize you had to do a blank search and I never make it to the bottom of a search result page before giving up... so I didn't know advanced search was even there.

FYI, I am currently using the Flash Gordon theme, and I don't even appear to HAVE a search function.

Flash does not need to search.  He merely demands that his women bring him what he needs, and it happens.

You can also just click search in the menu.
