I had read 'The Greatest Game Ever Played' well before the movie came out. As a golfer and fan, the story is more than remarkable. I thought what Paxton did in the movie was so well done and often superbly done.......except: I tired of the 'men in the shadows' crap (I guess they were tuberculosis henchmen?). Oh, and the story was dramatic enough without
pulling a Disney by having Francis Ouimet holing out a putt on the last hole to win. The fact is that he beat Harry Vardon by five strokes, and Ted Ray by six. Using the natural drama of trying to close out with the lead is just as compelling. And a tad more factual.
(if one were to do the 49ers-Broncos SB for a story, we wouldn't write it as a 28-27 thriller)
anyway, I've seen Apollo 13 a dozen times, parts of it another 50 or so times because it always seemed to be on the tube, and is a good movie to relax/fall asleep to. And many of the others he was in. Just seems odd to me that he was 61, as he was someone who always looked so damn young and healthy.
Just read his bio. What a great sense of humor. I'll never forget seeing 'Fish Heads' when it first aired on SNL (which he directed)
