I feel like, since I've been voting for Count since round one, that this will be the most futile survivor for me.

I didn't vote for it and I don't mind the song, but I've always read basically the same comments: lyrics are too cringeworthy and the music isn't that special, people only like JP's ending solo.

The Shattered Fortress

Besides the lyrics being a bit too weakly written, I think they are too specifically emotional for MP that I cannot relate since I wasn't there for any of the events he mentions and because I have no personal relationship to either MP or his father. When he wrote A Change of Seasons, it's wasn't just about his mother's death, but also what he learned from it and how it affects the rest of his life. But The Best of Times feels more like he's just reminiscing about events that none of the listeners were there for and therefore has pretty much zero relevance.

That is my main reason. Musically it's alright, but I think it's a bit dull. The outro solo is fine, but it drags on for too long.

I've always found The Best of times really beautiful musically, especially the main theme. Even the other theme (the one that turns into the chorus during the second half) is so strong that it could have been the main one. The more energetic bits are also great, it's truly groove-heavy.

I personally don't mind the lyrics. It's also very cool when lyricists include information and details in a way that there's no chance you can relate to them directly, they're more of an open diary and paint a picture that's more personal than universal. The only other lyricist in DT with that kind of approach was Kevin Moore. "I wanna talk about lifelong mistakes, and you can tell your stepfather I said so" comes to mind. Very interesting.

I remember the first time I heard the song, it started all slow and mellow and I was like "well, of course it's slow and melanchonic, it's for his deceased father"... and then out of nowhere kicks in the real intro the song, all upbeat and with an Images and Words feel, brought a big smile to my face, I like to think that's what happened with Mike's father when he heard the song.

I can certainly enjoy specifically personal lyrics as well. In fact, when done right, they're my favorite kind. Like, I mentioned A Change of Seasons in my earlier post. "Preparing for her flight, I held with all my might, fearing my deepest fright, she walked into the night, she turned for one last look, she looked me in the eye, I said I love you, goodbye", is one of the best lyrics ever, but it's not like I was there for that event. But "the case of the missing dog" does nothing for me. There's nothing there or in the rest of the song for me to latch on to.

It's hard to say why for certain, but I never felt that there was any weight to The Best of Times.
