Okay, just got back home after a long trip - the show was overall awesome. No gripes about the setlist, or the down-tuning. Although he struggled a little here and there, James did great overall. I'm sure he'll get better as the tour progresses. Obviously, the second set and encore were highlights for me, although the first set was cool too.
My only complaint was Mangini's playing on Hell's Kitchen...he really didn't do MP's parts justice with that one. All those cymbal flourishes are, in my opinion, compositionally important to the overall piece; they add a lot. He didn't do them. It felt very half-assed. Kinda like, "okay, I'm going to just play in the right time signature, and as long as I play the same basic kind of groove, it should be fine". Having said that, it was the first show of the tour, and maybe as the tour goes on he'll stick to the original, but who knows. There are times where it's not a big deal to do your own thing, but that song sure as hell wasn't one of them - at least, not in my opinion.
Overall, solid performance.
