Okay, I really didn't.  But I just wanted to throw that one out there.

"DC" is another -- probably far more common that "Washington, D.C."  I once dated someone who worked for an airline, so I got into the habit of using airport codes ("SMF" and "ABQ" come to mind).

You guys start talking about L.A and I start thinking about "California Love".  Shake, Shake it baby... shake, shake it, SHAKEITBABY.

Sorry I lost my train of thought there.

I grew up and still live in Southwest Virginia; when I was at VT, there was SWVA (pronounced swa-va) and NOVA.  We didn't really spell-out the letters but we did use the phonetics.  I can see where it might gets old, but it doesn't make me want to snap anybody's neck or anything (that's a side-bar that recent P&R frequenters will recognize).

Back on track... anger over FB posts.  My neighbor's ex-wife and daughter (again if you've been in the P&R sub, you'll know where I'm coming from) had a wonderfully lovely, full-on argument with another woman (over the phone) last night about something this person had written on FB.  The argument was complete and included a lot of "bitch please" and "you better watch your f'n mount talking about me" yada, yada, yada.  Again, glad that I have no kids... my husky hearing it and running under our deck is troublesome enough to me.  The ex- wife is in her late 40's and the daughter is in her late 20's.
"Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter; Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man."  Ecclesiastes 12:13

Now with Twitler taking a high end steak of this caliber and insulting the cow that died for it by having it well done just shows zero respect for the product, which falls right in line with the amount of respect he shows for pretty much everything else.- Lonestar

Pretty much all our city names, us locals shorten. Albuquerque is Burque, Rio Rancho is Rio, Las Cruces is Cruces, Bernalillo is Berna. I don't really see a problem, we all know what we mean when we say it.

When I was a young teenager and had discovered the existence of pornography, I recall seeing some sort of pictorial that referred to "El Lay."

Haha.  Porn is always a step ahead.  :)

Quote
Anyway, is this any different than referring to Images and Words as "I&W" or Piece of Mind as "PoM"?

Very different.  If I was talking to you in person, I never in a million years would say "Hey, I listened to Pee oh Em last night.  Then I popped on a little eye and double you.  Kicked ass."

Quote
I'm curious about your use of "they" in the first sentence?  Are you limiting your irritation to folk in or from LA who refer to the city/region as "LA"?  In the first part of your post, it sounded you were referring generally to anyone who uses the acronym.

And yes, I go to "SF" not infrequently.  Also to "NYC".

"They" = those that are referring to the City of Los Angeles as "ellay".    I was born in the NYC area, and lived most of my life here.  Never once, not ever have I heard the City referred to as "Enwhy".    I will conceded the "Ay-Tee-El", ATL, for the airport code, but thats' not the initials of the City, per se.

I just listened to "That Lucky Old Sun" by Brian Wilson, and it's a love letter of sorts to the City, and it espouses a lot of what I'm talking about.   Also Concrete Blonde's "Roses Grow".  The Scorpions "Steam Rock Fever".  Each evoke "LA" in a passing way as if we're just supposed to understand and get it.   And, honestly, I guess I don't.

I've never heard anyone else express a lack of understanding of references to "LA" in any of these songs (or any other song, including the massively irritating "I Love L.A."), although I will confess I don't understand why "Steamrock Fever" refers to "L.A.," but mid-70s Scorpions lyrics were all a bit "out there."
[/quote]

No, no, it's not a lack of understanding; I get "Roses Grow", but it, and the Scorpions song, highlight what I'm saying.   In "Roses Grow", it's about how even among the dregs of the earth, good people exist ("roses grow", up through the cracks of the broken glass) but the "LA" is almost an afterthought, like "eh, no big thing".    In the Scorpions song, it makes ZERO sense, other than "hey we need to be cool, we need to make a hip reference, and so we'll throw "LA" in there, because, well, America!"

Again, all this doesn't amount to a hill of crap (it's the "mildly irritating" thread after all), just an observation, from a relative New Yorker, no less.   I guess I don't get the dichotomy of it.  It's supposed to be all at once a part of everything and yet detached from it all, ephemeral like the wind.

They should at least have the decency to say they aren't coming. I just recently kind of had it out over the phone with someone wanting to interview me. A few months ago, I applied for a data analytics/audit compliance management position at a marijuana grow facility nearby. I got a call from them last week asking me to come in for an interview. My first question was whether or not it was for the position I applied for and the woman I spoke with said no. I asked what the position was and she told me it was for a grow room manager position. They liked the home lettuce farm stuff on my resume. I then followed up, straight and to the point, with something like "Can I ask what the salary range is for this position?" and she followed up with a "well, we can't discuss that at this point, that's usually determined by experience and how we think you'll fit in. We'll go over that at the conclusion of the interview".

It really pissed me off. I'd imagine for 99% of applicants, that's one of the top three criteria when debating whether or not to take the job. Just tell me now. After a bunch of polite back and forth, I got her to tell me the maximum amount they were were willing to offer for the position. It was 45% less than what I make now. I declined to come in for the interview. I'm glad I finally got it out of her because I would have been pissed if I took a vacation day, went through the hassle of interviewing, only to be told that information at the conclusion of it all.

you wouldn't believe this Brian but on my adds on the internet, (I use Indeed) it says the rate per hour and the shifts and times.  Funny though, most never read it and when they come in, they tell me they want 1st shift which was not on the job posts and don't know the rate of pay.

I'm a member of a couple of local community groups on Facebook (one is for the community where I live, and the other is a neighboring community where I grew up).  Earlier today, someone posted a photo to one of the groups, which depicts an individual standing next to an election sign, with one hand on the sign (the kind that folks put up on their lawns).  The photo is black and white, has a "1:54:41 MON" time stamp, and looks like it probably was taken by a home security camera, so it's very grainy (can't even tell if the person is a man or a woman).  The caption encourages folks to call the police because this person "was caught on film stealing election signs."  The photo doesn't depict any such thing.  It could just as easily be a person putting a sign up than a person taking one down.  Or it could just be a person touching the sign while checking his/her cell phone.  There's no indication that the person who made the post actually witnessed the person "stealing" the sign.

This stuff happens all the time.  Folks post innocuous pictures claiming that the pictures depict nefarious acts, and folks just run with it.  Even worse is when folks share this stuff without being personally acquainted with the person who made the original post.

Bugs the crap out of me.

The buying of tickets for anything.

The Book of Mormon is coming to a local venue (The Palace) next April. I go online to see if the tickets are on sale yet and the first link is for www.theatrewaterbury.com. I click and start looking at the show availability. There's hardly anything available, per usual for that show, so I opt for a pair of some semi decent seats at $128 a piece.

Now, there's absolutely no verbiage anywhere throughout the checkout process that discusses fees. I check out, and the final total comes to $348 with no breakdown of what cost what. I want to kick myself in the ass for not being more diligent in my investigating, but turns out the tickets don't even go on sale for another 10 days. So I just paid some fucking asshole $100 to buy tickets for me and then send them to me. Looking back at the website, they put the disclaimer "We are a resale marketplace, not a box office or venue. Ticket prices may exceed face value. This site is not owned by Palace Theatre Waterbury ." all the way to the right in the corner where ads typically go and my eyes have been conditioned not to look. This is why I almost never attend events anymore. I hate this shit.

When I said "I paid a person", I meant I'm paying a company. I have no clue how it works TBH and it's all non-refundable / non-transferable. I hadn't realized that the tickets hadn't even gone on sale yet, and based on the link I clicked, I thought I was on the Palace Theater's ticket buying portal. I feel like such a shit.

I think it sounds kind of like these guys are basically a broker.  They get access to the tickets and will sell them to you for a hefty fee.  It is kind of like what Ticketmaster is, but just another level.  What a racket.  It's a crime what the industry has become.  Back in the day when there was no Internet, it made sense to have ticket brokers with booths at the local record store or wherever so that people from all over an area could access tickets to venues in their part of the world without having to drive all the way to a distant venue box office.  Nowadays, it's just an unnecessary layer that profits off the customers of the performer, and what Chino describes is an extreme example of that.

If third party companies couldn't run algorithms to buy up every available seat in the first 30 seconds, it wouldn't be an issue.

Which may be ran by the same company who sold you tickets.

My gf has been saying she wants to see Ariana Grande on her tour, tickets went on sale at 10am yesterday.  I waited in the virtual line to check out the ticket buying process for such a concert and found all the good cheap seats already on resale for a price higher than face value but lower than the next level of ticket prices.  Almost bought one because I was thinking of surprising my girlfriend but she was looking herself and said she was disgusted at how they set up the sales.  I agree, it was pretty messed up that you couldn't get a cheaper ticket because they were all bought likely by bots and then immediately set for resale.

Oi.
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

This may be a little off topic and I may be the weird one here but 70% of dudes who come shit in the bathroom follow this procedure:

Open the stall
Toilet paper on seat
Violet sounding assplosion
Stand up, pull TP from the roll once
Pants on and leave
Bonus points talking on the phone the whole time.

Like am I fucking up by wiping my ass more than once? No way these are all one wipers. Or is it because they are investment bankers they don't have time to thoroughly wipe your ass?

Like am I fucking up by wiping my ass more than once? No way these are all one wipers. Or is it because they are investment bankers they don't have time to thoroughly wipe your ass?

Interesting pronoun choices....

I’ve never understood the taking a dump phone talker? We have a couple of those guys in my office and to me it’s just odd. I turn my ringer off and never answer or talk when doing the business. These guys carry full blown conversations on.

Had one of these last week.  Full blown conversation and loud as fuck.  I made sure to flush a couple extra times so whomever he was talking to knew exactly where he was.  He was also camped out in the handicapped stall (not that there's anyone on my floor who needs it, but still).

True, I don't understand that. Not to say it's never happened.  I've had plenty of ghost shits in my life, but it's rare and it's much more common to at least wipe twice AND wash your hands.  When I'm home, somtimes, I don't wash my hands.  I always do that in a public or workplace bathroom.

The phone use is a different thing altogether.  It takes a certain type of person to have a conversion on the bowl not only while shitting, but while someone else is shitting next to you who can hear the whole convo.  That's just awkward and stupid.  Especially in the work place where you can't even blame it on being drunk. Someone who comes to my building (who I've heard on the phone while on the pooper) apparently has also brought his coffee there as well according to my coworker.  Now that is another level of stupid and you can't blame it on having some important job.
