On the contrary, if you walk into a Hallmark with your head held high and your chest out and walk out the same after taking a picture of a stretchy phallic toy, your man card just went platinum.  :hat

Hey, all good.  Funny thing is my wife bought me a stainless steel cup for my beer in there that's kick ass.  It has a built in bottle opener.  I would never guess that would be in there.

I don't care for the "oppressive"; there's no need for that, but I struggle with the notion that somehow "gender roles" in and of themselves are bad.   I  mean, simple biology says that there are things that a woman can do that a man can't and vice versa, and more importantly, if you adhere to the "do your job" philosophy of leaders like Bill Belichick, that's to be celebrated and embraced, not rejected.

I know in my house, there is NEVER the conversation of "that's a woman's job" or "that's a man's job".   But we DO have our tasks.  I am not allowed to touch laundry.  My wife steers clear of the cars.   But we both do the cleaning.   I do 95% of the cooking (I work out of the house, she works about 40 minutes from us; she has a hot, home-cooked meal waiting for her at least 4 nights per week).   She does 90% of the Christmas shopping and stuff.

Now, I get that it's very easy to confuse "gender" and "sex" (characterizing the former as being more behavioral, the latter as being more biological) but still.  Research is still evolving; we know that some indications are that NUMBER of parents is more important than the sex/gender of the parents, but more research is necessary.  I do know that "memes" aren't the ticket to better understanding.

I basically hate gender stereotypes, especially those that involve husband/wife roles and "duties", because in my house, they're reversed.  If something's broken, I fix it right away because I paid for the damned thing and I'm not getting anything out of it if it isn't working.  That's simple economics.  If she breaks something, it may take a while longer, but that's only because she doesn't tell me it needs fixing; I'm expected to use E.S.P. or just "notice" that it's broken and jump right on it.

If it were up to her, the house would never be clean.  I vacuum, I do the laundry, I do the dishwasher.  Why?  Because we have kids.  I lived in multiple situations with all male roommates before we got married; I have no problem living in an unclean house.  If my wife wants to live in a filthy house, I would probably let her, but since the kids also live there, I clean the house.

And so on, and so on.  Fuck gender stereotypes and male/female roles.  Go with whatever works, and it's none of anyone else's damned business.

There's a weird misconception that if women do anything that falls under a stereotypical woman's role, it's bad and vice versa.

Truth is, as Orbert said, go with what works. If the girl is just really great a cooking and the dude sucks, then celebrate that. If the girl prefers doing the laundry because Stadler screws it up (like he does everything else in life), then celebrate that. The problem is when we're doing it BECAUSE of the stereotype and not because we want to. When a man tells a woman that she is supposed to cook/clean, that's not good. When a woman tells me a man he has to be good at fixing things, then that's an issue.

Like me. I love baking etc. So when I'm in a relationship, I'm usually doing the baking/cooking, and some of the cleaning. My girlfriend (when I have one) does other stuff. We do what we naturally do. Sometimes it conforms to stereotypes, other times it doesn't.

I used to cook a lot more, earlier in our marriage.  I was a professional cook for years, and I like to cook.  Through forces beyond our control, I became the sole income, so it made sense that some roles and duties shift a bit.  She now does all the cooking, not because it's "her job" but because I'm at work all day and she's home.  It just makes sense that her contributions to the partnership take a different form.

(She still doesn't clean the house.  Whatever.  You choose your battles.)

It took a little time but my wife can now use the snow blower.  I borrowed my neighbor's wood splitter last year and she was enthralled with it.  I think she liked the power. :lol

But I would argue that - absent just personal preference in what you're looking for in a mate - if a man is telling a woman that she is SUPPOSED to [insert ANYTHING] it's a problem.  When a woman tells me a man has to be good at [insert ANYTHING] it's a problem.  I don't know that it's necessarily tied to "gender stereotypes" as much as it is relationship power dynamics.  Maybe it's me, but I'm not looking for a "yes-woman" (except when asked about how huge I am) or a servant.  I want a PARTNER who's going to contribute to the relationship in the best possible way for her, for me, and for us.
