For reals? That would be sad.

When I was in Vegas a few weeks ago, there was a barcade right down the road from my hotel. It was a decently sized bar with 35 or so retro video game machines. They were all free to play. It was fantastic.

A little while ago we searched for nearby arcades, and all we found was a local bowling alley that also has arcade games, but it was all crap. We played a bit of Pac-Man, but the joystick was hard to play with, it wasn't quite like the original, and it cost $2 per life. Such a ripoff. The rest of the games were crappy racing games, random stuff like hoops, and mobile games. Why would I pay to play a free old mobile game at an arcade?

At the peak of my arcade gaming time as a kid, there was a pretty good arcade down the street that gave 5 tokens for a buck, and all games were 1 token.  I had a paper route at the time, too.  The way you got paid was, at the end of the month, you would go to each of your customers on your route and collect their $6.25.  You would then turn in your bill to the local district (which worked out to probably like $4.00 per customer) and keep the rest.  So basically, once I collected enough for my bill, whenever I would get that next $6.25, it was off to the arcade for 31 tokens!!!

One of the things I find kind of funny when looking back at arcade culture is how today people won't use a game or an app because it isn't free. People refusing to buy Roller Coaster Tycoon (original & 2) on Android because $5.99 is too expensive. Hell, there were afternoons where I'd run $10 through the Simpsons game and think nothing of it.

Tell me about it.  I can't begin to imagine how much money I deposited into Centipede, Street Fighter II, or Dragon's Lair.  I'll bet it was more than the $60 that console games cost nowadays too.

There was a time I could get to the 50the key level in Pacific Man.  A quarter would last 2 hours.

Centipede and Ms. Pac-Man were my jam.  I have no idea how many quarters I used on those.

50th key on the Pac Man game. You happy bro. :lol

Actually the 52 key was my best.

I don't see what's bad about people balking at a $6 app. First of all, unlike the arcades, *you* are fronting the cost of the computing platform it runs on, as well as the power. And secondly, unlike in arcades where you dump a quarterat most to see whether a game stinks or not, games on the app store often have a no return policy, which means you're stuck with what you bought.

I was thinking that "kids these days" wouldn't even know what an arcade machine looks like, since they seem to play consoles and maybe PC games.  My son is a serious gamer, but never went to the arcade.  I don't even know if there is one in my town.

No guess on what the specific game in the picture originally was before shooping.
