I love concert DVDs. I have a pretty good collection. Some of my favorites (in terms of video, sound, performance, setlist, editing aka not just my favorite bands):
Kamelot - One Cold Winter's Night - Maybe my favorite overall concert DVD. Just so well done and it's in a small venue but that didn't stop the band from going all out.
Devin Townsend - The Retinal Circus - OMG this concert is on another level. Was supposed to be a concert that summarized his career as well as had a loose storyline around the songs (he even admits you need to use your imagination a bit to understand the story during the concert
). There's A LOT going on the stage during the concert. It's honestly unlike anything I've ever seen and was pulled off ridiculously well. This is actually what got me sucked into his music.
Iron Maiden - Flight 666 - The actual Flight 666 movie is amazing, but the bonus disc with essentially the entire concert (just broken up from different shows) is really awesome and has probably the best editting of any IM dvd. (Steve Harris did not touch it)
Blind Guardian - Imaginations through the Looking Glass - Really awesome setlist and this outdoors festival was set up for BG to film it so it's packed with hardcore fans singing along to all the songs. Just a really great atmosphere and of course the performance of And Then There Was Silence
Dream Theater - Live at Budokan - I find this to be DT's best overall. Score didn't match the video/audio quality of Budokan IMO.
Pagan's Mind - Full Circle - Has two sets from Pagans Mind and while they are far from being one of my favorite bands, there is some really groovey instrumentals going on in this concert. Also, for a low budget band, they managed to have some amazing quality in this video, much better than bands who are much bigger than they are. I was simply blown away by how good this was.
Within Temptation - Black Symphony - I think you may get more bang for buck if you had their newest DVD, but the Black Symphony concert with orchestra and choir is just stunning. Great atmosphere and the music just sounds soooo good with the real orchestra there. Also guest appearance by Anneke!
Honorable mentions:
The Big Four Live from Sofia - Not the best in performance and quality (pretty solid though) but you get the full show, all four bands performances on two discs (Metallica, Megadeath, Slayer, Anthrax)
311 - 311 Day Live in New Orleans - Poor quality, but ummm 65 song setlist! Hard to beat that in terms of getting a lot of music on one purchase.
Epica - Retrospect - A really nice 10 year anniversary concert with orchestra and choir. Could have made the top list, but the concert lighting had an effect on the cameras making it not the best visually to watch.
...and I feel like Im forgetting more good ones, but on another note, I am super excited to get my next blu ray, Nightwish's Vehicle of Spirit. Two full concerts plus tons of bonus songs. Based on the youtube videos, this one could be on my list of great concert dvds.
