2017 albums
« on: December 05, 2016, 06:11:32 AM »
It's strange. Usually by now we have some idea of major prog album releases for the early part of next year, but it seems rather quiet. Maybe 2017's gonna be a quiet year, after many of the heavyweights released albums in 2016. Atm, the only definite release I'm looking forward to is Blackfield V. We may well have Steven Wilson 5 released before the year is out, but I'm not expecting that until late in the year, if not even early 2018. Another band that have a song out and a festival appearance confirmed is The Tangent, so we might have the follow-up to the wonderful A Spark in the Aether released at some point.

There's a few really big ones scheduled:

Pain of Salvation
Mastodon
Blackfield (like you mentioned)
Native Construct (personal favourite)
Karnivool (in the studio)
Soen
Ayreon (despite not liking ayreon that much im pretty excited for this one)

But overall I agree. This year was an absolute beast for music, I don't expect 2017 to be nearly as good.

EDIT: I've also seen talk about Ne Obliviscaris getting out new material in 2017, that would be awesome but I'm not getting my hopes up
people on this board are actual music fans who developed taste in music and not casual listeners who are following current fashion trends and listening to only current commercial hits.

I have no idea what is on the horizon for me next year. I'll probably just keep playing catch-up again like I have been in the latter half of 2016. :lol

New Native Construct and possibly new Ne Obliviscaris sound good to me though.

Ayreon...meh. I really did not like TTOE at all and I've never been a big fan of 01011001 either. I'll check out anything Arjen releases but I wouldn't say I'm excited or looking forward to this new Ayreon album at all at this point.

Besides the one mentioned above:

-Sigur Rós (single sounds promising :azn:)
-Sleep Party People
-Lorde (album is as good as finished I think)
-Bent Knee
-Nothing More

are working on a new album too. I'm really looking forward to quite a lot of 2017 releases actually!

JoNo (the band) have signed with frontier records and will release their third album early next year.... really looking forward to this. The last one, Silence, was fantastic.

Edit: If you don't know JoNo but love for instance Queen and A.C.T take a look at their earlier records:

Oh... and one of their guitarists is also playing with Within Temptation

I know literally nothing about this but it sounds like it could be good.

Literally just announced today, release date March 10th. https://www.facebook.com/novacollectivefusion/

Keyboardist is my brother (original Haken keyboardist) so I have the album already. :P It's sooooo good.

I have been waiting to start a Calendar Topic, as I have the skeleton already setup. But I wanted to look on some facebook and twitter pages 1 last time before doing so.

But edits don't take that much time.

Haken tweeted a YouTube video preview of the Nova Collective album. Interestingly there's no vocalist in the credits, so is it an instrumental album or will guest vocalists be announced in due course?

Honestly, 2017 looks pretty barren for me.  Sure, I'm excited for new Ayreon and I hear Big Wreck has an album out that year, and maybe Trivium or Daughtry could get an album out in 2017, but most of my favorite bands, this year, had great releases which means 2017 is going to be hard to top, but I would love to be surprised.

Godspeed You Black Emperor have been playing 2 long songs on their recent tour, totalling about 35 minutes, and someone on Youtube (with a history of not bullshitting) says the band told him at a gig that they're going to put out an EP of those tracks soon.

Flying Colors just started sessions for their 3rd album this week, according to Mike flying down to Florida.

Also, both Stan and John have been writing with Ted and Alan for the next Spock's Beard album, so that might come out next year, too (with their new drummer).

On the Swedish/Flower Kings front, I'm not sure what Roine is up to these days after his busy year with the Steve Hackett Band, releasing Anderson/Stolt, and a new 70's-era Kaipa band album. I'd love to see him reunite the Flower Kings proper and make a new album (since it's been a few years since Desolation Rose). With Neal, Mike, and Pete all busy with other projects and bands, I'd hope Roine goes back to HIS home band and releases something new.

And lastly, Big Big Train have been working on the follow-up to Folklore, which was originally going to be an EP titled Skylon, but they wrote way more material for it, so now it's going to be a full LP titled Grimspound (which follows an odd pattern of alphabetical album names - English Electric, Folklore, Grimspound - and when joked about on the BBT Facebook group, Greg Spawton says their new big album after Grimspound, a 2-disc concept album, is actually titled with an "H" for the time being. Weird!).

-Marc.

Alright so does anybody have some sort of information about the next Skyharbor album release date? On either a video for one of Skyharbor's singles, or the Eric Emery vocal cover of Evolution, I noticed a reply from Skyharbor's channel to a fan asking the same thing I am, saying essentially, "[they're working on it. This new single was to give [the fans] a taste of Eric in the band".

Also, anybody got any Seventh Wonder updates? I haven't heard any news since the release of Inner Enemy and that was a long time ago.
