Others "...of the Year" 2016
« on: December 03, 2016, 12:11:18 PM »
The Album of the Year thread is already dealing with releases for 2016, but there are other things it would be interesting to see your choices for. You can choose any or all of these categories, but a maximum of five choices per category.

Songs of the Year (Any song from any album released in 2016)

Band Discovery of the Year (Bands you've really gotten into for the first time this year)

Album Discovery of the Year (Your favourite album purchased in 2016, but released in a previous year)

Track Discovery of the Year (Same as above, but for individual tracks)

Songs of the Year: Despite massively overplaying it, I am pretty sure Ihsahn's Celestial Violence belongs in my top 3 of the year, it is not #1 anymore though. Also, the biggest grower of the year  comes in at #3 as I despised this song at first but have come to absolutely love it pretty quickly: Avenged Sevenfold's Exist. My no. 1 has to be The Lantern by Slice the Cake, or if I could pick the entirety of Westward Bound (pt. 1 + 2) that would be it.

1. Slice the Cake - Westward Bound Pt. I: The Lantern (+ Pt. 2: The Pilgrim's Progress)
2. Ihsahn - Celestial Violence
3. Avenged Sevenfold - Exist

Band Discovery of the Year: Slice the Cake, against all odds, is not no. 1 here. I have dug into more than just their latest effort and it has all been solid. More than just turning me onto a band, these guys have completely changed my view on a genre I used to mindlessly dismiss. Though at the very start of the year I got into BTBAM and they have become one of my favorite bands, I love almost all of their output at this point. For #3 it's Ihsahn, I was familiar with him but hadn't gotten into his music fully until the release of their first new single, Celestial Violence, which was released around February if memory serves me well.

1. Between the Buried and Me
2. Slice the Cake
3. Ihsahn

Album Discovery of the Year:

1. Slice the Cake - Odyssey to the West
2. Between the Buried and Me: The Great Misdirect (this and slice the cake are lightyears ahead of anything below it.
3. Novembre - Materia

Track Discovery of the Year:

1. Solstafir - Djakninn ((no contest, this is becoming one of my favorite songs)th0nks parama)
2. Nothing More - This is the Time (Ballast)
3. Dreadnought - Minuet de Lune
people on this board are actual music fans who developed taste in music and not casual listeners who are following current fashion trends and listening to only current commercial hits.

Songs of the Year: Let's see here.

1. Alter Bridge - Cradle to the Grave
2. Switchfoot - Shake this Feeling
3. Tremonti - Unable To See
4. Sick Puppies - Where Do I Begin
5. Dream Theater - Our New World

Hmm, not really too heavy tracks, but they are very anthemic and has a good message overall that kind of reflects my life and where I'm at right now.

Band Discovery of the Year: Definitely Poets of the Fall.  Heard a few songs of theirs from this Twitch streamer/youtuber, Cryaotic, and I was just sold right away.

Album Discovery of the Year: Even if this was released last year, I enjoyed Winery Dogs' Hot Streak album and Poets of the Fall's Jealous Gods.

Track Discovery of the Year: Winery Dogs' The Bridge and Poets of the Fall's Clear Blue Sky

Songs of the Year
Swans – Cloud of Forgetting
Swans – Cloud of Unknowing
Swans – The World Looks Red, The World Looks Black

Well, that was easy.

Album Discoveries of the Year (not in order, though the first three would be 1, 2 and 3 in some order)
Solstafir – Svartir Sandar
A 78 minute album with barely a weak moment. The fourth track is an obvious step down from the rest of the album, and they do a Blackwater Park and open the album with one of the weakest songs, though still a very good one. And I'd have preferred if the weather report sample was further back in the mix and not right at the front. Other than that, I can't say a remotely negative thing about this album. Almost every track is incredible. I particularly like tracks 2 and 3, 6 and 7, and the last two.

Charles Mingus – Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus
Oh look, more stuff in the style of Black Saint and the Sinner Lady, more or less my favourite album ever.

Ryan Adams – 48 Hours
I've probably heard fifteen or more albums by this guy by now. This is possibly his best, and definitely the best as a beginning to end track for track consistently great album. And it was recorded in 48 hours, and never released.

Swans – Children of God
Aside from Public Castration is a Good Idea, this is the earliest album of theirs I can stomach, and it's amazing. At first, I just thought, oh, this is alright, but it has really grown on me. (I still haven't listened further than the Skin albums, which are rubbish, but that's what next year and the year after is for, I guess).

Allman Brothers Band – Hittin’ the Note

Last studio album, 34 years after their first, and their best. Listening through their discography, they trudged through decades of mediocrity to end on this high.

Neurosis - Through Silver in Blood
I mean, this fucking album.

I'll also add that I listened to shit-tons of Joan Baez and Nina Simone this year, but both are older artists that released albums too frequently for their own good and so consistently released albums that are half brilliant songs and half much less so.

Songs of the year:
Fates Warning - The Light and Shade of Things
The Dear Hunter - March (there could be more of them from this album)
The Hotelier - Soft Animal
(those 3 are off my 3 favorite albums of the year)

Band discovery of the year:
The Dear Hunter - heard of them before, and heard Act IV once last year but got into them this year
The Antlers
dredg - I remember listening to Catch Without Arms few year ago and liking it but I never explored them further until recently

Album discovery of the year (released whenever):
The Antlers - Hospice
Modest Mouse - The Moon & Antarctica
Beardfish - +4626-COMFORTZONE (thanks to Nick and his new year's show)

Track discovery of the year:
The Antlers - Palace (I think this is my most listened individual song in this year)
Agent Fresco - Eyes of a Cloud Catcher
Okkervil River - So Come Back, I'm Waiting
...the years just pass like trains
I wave but they don't slow down...

Band discovery/Album discovery of the year

Finally got around to check out two DTF favorite bands

Haken - Aquarius Great album although the singer takes some time to get used too. I heard that they got even better on their following records so I'm excited to go forward in their discography

Riverside - Anno Domini High Definition Interesting and energetic side of prog

Insomnium - Winter's Gate Just recently listened to this record and was amazed. Each listen makes this stronger, given more time this could be a serious contender for the top 5 of 2016

Dagoba - What Hell Is About Full metal onslaught from France  :metal
Must've been Kwyji sending all the wrong songs.   ;D

3. Metallica - Spit Out The Bone
4. Dream Theater - Moment of Betrayal

Zydar is my new hero.  I just laughed so hard I nearly shat.
