Did you hear about his death? He died at age 90.

I've already seen a quote a few times that said "Fidel Castro survived 638 assassination attempts, but even he could not survive 2016".

Only King could mis-spell a LETTER.
Yep. I think the only party in the MP/DT situation that hasn't moved on is DTF.

I've seen both good and bad things about him. All I know is that there was a trade embargo between Cuba & the US.

Dunno if he instigated it.

What else did he do ?

Was he a good guy or not ?

p.s. Liam Neeson should 100% play him in a biopic.

RIP? More like burn in hell.

The fact the so many were willing to swim or raft in shark infested waters to try to get away from him should speak volumes.

Yup.  To see Mike Lowell, an ex pro ball players at the same thing that he is happy to find out he's dead should say it all.

Everybody is entitled to their own feeling on the subject, but I try not to celebrate death.  Especially so close to the death itself.  That said, those that escaped Cuba have earned the right to celebrate without judgment.

PR thread?

To be fair, a lot of those attempts were pretty piss-poor.

I was just reading this article no more than 20 mins ago about what this Miami Herald sportswriter went through when his family got out.  A story I'm sure you could hear from thousands of other refugees.

Are things better in Cuba now? If so, I'll celebrate that.

But I'll never celebrate a persons death. No matter how horrible they were.

I would also never celebrate someone's death, but it should go without saying that Castro doesn't deserve the R.I.P. part.  Very odd to title the thread that way.

Under most circumstances I would agree with this. However, there are times when a person's actions have gone beyond this. He's certainly not the worst on the list, but he's on the list.

That's not completely accurate...he did express regret about the forced labor camps for gays, called them a "great injustice" and accepted blame for them.  That is only a piece of the injustices he perpetrated against LGBTQ, and LGBTQ was only one one the demographics that suffered greatly under him, but it's also not nothing.  It probably helps that his neice is the leader of the LGBTQ rights movement in the country...

So one regret over many atrocities.

I still have not empathy for him.

Myself, I have almost no clue what he's actually guilty of. Two things I do know: A. There are actual, honest to goodness Cubanos that liked what he had to do. B. I put very little stock in what I hear about other nations from dissidents and the CIA. In fact, it's probably just as safe to assume the opposite.

This is not a defense of The Beard. Only an observation that what we know of his misdeeds includes a great deal that's likely misstated and exaggerated.
Argument, the presentation of reasonable views, never makes headway against conviction, and conviction takes no part in argument because it knows.

When you hear many people talk about the horrors and what they did to escape,  that is enough evidence.  It's not just a few people.

Kind of hard to claim his adversaries were just making stuff up when the sole rule of the nation he established is under one family and the majority of it under one person.  That's not "the people's" revolution, that's the Castro power grab.  I tend to not care for dictators as a rule of thumb.

One of my college professors had left Cuba. He was the most progressive commie professor I had. He was also openly gay, which apparently didn't fly with Castro until his niece came along and started to go to bat for LGBTQ members of Cuba (prior to that, they went to labor camps).

So on the LGBTQ awakening, it was, again, Castro-centric.
