2016-11-19 - Reno, NV
« on: November 20, 2016, 11:04:14 PM »
I was not originally planning on going to this show, but changed my mind at the last minute.  And I am glad I did.  But our 2-hour drive turned into 4 1/2 hours due to a TON of snow being dumped over Donner Summit.  In California, people tend to lose their minds in any kind of weather.  Add blizzard conditions to the mix, and it is a recipe for disaster.

Anyway, we finally got there, quickly found our seats, and then realized there was a floor area down front.  So we abandoned out seats and went down to the floor.  Within 5 minutes, the show started.  Saw the entire thing from about 2 feet from the stage.  Sound was great.  Crowd was great.

I have to say, the songs that were cut did not really take too much away from the show.  And the encores were WELL worth it.  The crowd loved the added "hits," and there was even a bona fide mosh pit that erupted when they played Pull Me Under!  I don't think I have ever seen a mosh pit at a DT show.  The band were cracking up about it!  :lol

Spent FAR too long chatting with Maddie and the band after the show, but it was great.  I will share a few of the details in a bit.  More later.  Still exhausted from the drive home last night.  But fantastic show.  I am SO glad I went.

Hope you post us all the news you might have gotten from the band  :)

Could you please confirm which songs are they cutting? I've been reading posts from other members here on different threads, and some seem to remember it differently. Also, Setlist fm. has different setlists as well. Supposedly they're cutting The X Aspect, The Road to Revolution and Heaven's Cove, but some setlists say they played Begin Again and some say they didn't play it. Did they play it?

Thank you! ;D

In Anaheim they cut the three you mentioned in addition to Begin Again.  The 4 were cut.

Yes, I believe that is correct.  And a couple of comments about that and another issue that has been mentioned quite a bit:

1.  Regarding the songs that were cut, I have mixed feelings.  I love The X Aspect, so I definitely noticed that one being cut, and I missed it.  The Road To Revolution is one that I initially didn't care for, but it has grown on my, and I think it plays a fairly important role in the story.  The other two, I can take or leave.  But overall, as the concert was unfolding, I didn't overly miss those songs being in the set, and I don't feel that skipping them took away from the overall vibe of the story.  I think the tradeoff in getting some "fun" songs to get the crowd going and end on a bit more of a fun note was worthwhile.  I think it was a really good move to make this change.  John said he kinda wished they would have done it right at the beginning of the second leg.

2.  Regarding the click and song pacing:  Because of some discussion on the forum about a click track and playing at "album pace" makes the songs and the set drag a bit in a live setting, I tried to pay particular attention to that aspect.  Honestly, I can't say that I felt anything dragged at all, or that the pace felt slow or awkward.  The energy was great the entire time.  The only song I felt maybe could have benefitted from being slightly more up tempo was The Spirit Carries On.  But even that was fine.  And with a song like that, there is a danger of it losing its emotional impact if played too fast anyway.  I think the click was just fine and didn't take anything away from the show whatsoever.  And of course, in terms of the backing track, lights, video, etc., we know that it really adds a lot behind the scenes.  So, having gone to a show and paid particular attention to pacing, I can definitely say that I have gone from "for those criticizing how I click might take away some of the excitement and energy from a live performance, I see what you are saying, and maybe there is something to that" to "using a click does not take away from this band's performance whatsoever."

Thank you, Boskaryus!  ;D

Regarding the missing songs, according to Setlist fm., looks like they also cut Whispers on the Wind yesterday in San Jose. That makes 5 songs now  :o

About the click, I'm glad to hear (read) that! Hope you can post this on the other threads where the "click track makes it sound robotic" opinions abound :lol

I'm not sure the plan is to cut that many songs.  I haven't heard anything specific about the San Jose show.  But it would not surprise me if they had to adjust something there just because of the time crunch in getting out of Reno and getting there.  There is not a direct route from Reno, NV to San Jose, CA.  I know they were late getting out of Reno and were already exhausted, not only because of the tour in general, but because of the time it took to get in there in the first place.  Add to that an already long drive and the fact that you have busses and trucks having to creep along and travel the Donner Pass in blizzard conditions, and I'm guessing they got into San Jose VERY late and very tired.  Even if the show started on time, there is a likely domino effect of things getting thrown off behind the scenes.  So if I had to guess about an extra song or two being cut in San Jose, it wouldn't surprise me that it was because of the weather conditions coming out of Reno.  That storm was BRUTAL.

Some other concert-specific notes for Reno:

-This venue was AMAZING!  Jordan said he is not crazy about the idea of playing casinos and doesn't really like that aspect of it.  But I hope he softens to it and the other band members don't mind, because this theater was fantastic, and other casinos have really nice theaters as well.  I get that it might feel kinda cheesey.  But in this day and age, casinos have really upped the ante by adding nice theater venues that are geared toward putting on really great concerts, and it has become the norm to play those kinds of venues.  I hope the band embrace it.  The other members seemed to like the venue.

-You could not have a bad seat in this place, I'm pretty convinced.  Even the front-most seats were elevated so that you could clearly see the stage over the standing floor area.  I think that area might even serve as an orchestra pit for shows that use an orchestra.  But for this show, it was a standing pit, and it was great.  Did I mention that a mosh pit started during Pull Me Under?  :lol  Going back to that, I don't mean that people were just energetic and bouncing around.  People were actually moshing in the area in between James and JP during PMU, and they were moshing HARD.  But I do have to say, it is the only concert I have been to where people were moshing, but to a person, everyone was really courteous about it.  I mean, yeah, people were slamming into each other and pushing, and knocking each other around.  But everybody was smiling and into it, and nobody was taking cheap shots.  And if someone started to go down, there were immediately several sets of hands holding them up before they could hit the floor.  It was SO much fun.  I was out of breath by the time the song was over.  :lol

-Not something the general public would have known, but the backstage area was HUGE!  I think it was bigger than the seating area of the theater.  And there were sets and props for all kinds of different productions.  I think they must have quite a few shows running all at once or something.  It was kinda neat hanging out back there afterwards among all the props (including a full sized plane) and neon and stuff.

-I met some really cool people there from the Bay Area and Sacramento area.  Hope they join up here.  Just to again give another example of how cool this band is, this one guy met Jordan walking around the casino before the show, and he was telling me how cool it was that Jordan just sat down and had a conversation with him rather than just a quick flyby handshake, and Jordan even invited the guy to come hang out at the after show.  I just love these guys.  I really do.

It makes sense, considering all the weather difficulties and their extensive touring schedule, hope they don't start cutting more songs from the set, though  :-[

re: moshing at a DT show..

I was part of a Pit during the DT show opening for Maiden at the San Manuel Ampitheater in San Bernardino. All of the DT fans who were in the field all gathered as close to the seated area as possible and we moshed to Panic Attack, Constant Motion, etc.
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

I was there!! I was 12 years old so it was kinda scary, but Dream Theater and Iron Maiden were AWESOME!

Several days ago I e-mailed JP to ask him about the songs that were cut since reports seemed to vary depending on the person. So for the record, here's what he said:
Quote
We dropped: The X Aspect, The Road To Revolution, Heaven's Cove, Begin Again and Whispers In The Wind from TA. Same songs cut each night.
As a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

This is very interesting, since nobody on DTF (that I've seen) mentioned Whispers being cut and I've only seen it cut for the last concert on Setlist fm.
I guess we would have to take JP's word since he's, you know, kinda an expert on the matter  ;)

Oh, okay.  That settles it then.  I have to say, although I know the album very well, I have listened to disk 1 a ton, but only listened to disk 2 a fraction of that many times.  So something skipped on disk 2 would have less a chance of registering.  But good to know.

Scotty, when I was talking set list with him for the upcoming shows, he mentioned a recent conversation with you.

Winger Theater Forums........or WTF.  ;D
TAC got a higher score than me in the electronic round? Honestly, can I just drop out now? :lol
