the best song, live, by any band
« on: November 16, 2016, 11:31:18 PM »
Keeping with the current threads, regarding best opening song, best and worst opening acts, well, ....as to the best song live, from 1977 through 1986, there is no comparison.

Bohemian Rhapsody

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GlmrzGyjW_E

The first time I saw them, it was disjointed, parts played three different times.   The following winter, in its complete live form, the walk off middle part....there is NOTHING live that compares....in my opinion (as well as so many Midwest rockers that saw them with me...)

Question:  was there a better live track?

Maybe this
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VNeNRG3FpCg

or, this from 1:33:03

...going along with Dragon Attack's Queen thread has been like taking a free class in Queen knowledge. Where else are you gonna find info like that?!

Any version of Comfortably Numb that David Gilmour plays, either with PF sans Roger, or as a solo act.

I've attended many great concerts over the years and seen many acts on my bucket list, but this is very simple:

Yes - Awaken Sydney 2003
Absolutely mesmerising.   :hefdaddy

I've seen hundreds of bands in my time. I have no idea what I would choose as the best live song. Plus, there are all of the bootlegs I've listened to. There were songs that gave me chills, like hearing Jewel singing Angel Standing By live. The same for The Spirit Carries On during Score. I've never experienced it live but I could only imagine how awesome it must be hearing that blip that signifies Echoes is about to be played. I would love to be there hearing Sarah Brightman and Andrea Bocelli singing Con Te Partiro together. Or being in the audience during one of Mozart's pieces being played by a symphony.

The best song I heard (even if that particular song wasn't great at other times) or the song that as a rule is the best to see live?

The first one:  The Song Remains The Same on the Page/Plant tour in '95.  I actually semi-blacked out during it it was so mesmerizing.  It was like I was hipmotized.  I'm not shitting or joking here one bit.  It was other-worldly.

The second one:  Maybe Neverland by Marillion. Comfortably Numb WITH GILMOUR.

Comfortably Numb by David Gilmour. You absolutely cannot beat that closing solo.

Another one I enjoyed, and that did a lot in getting me into the band in question, was Marillion's Three Minute Boy. The audience singing along with the "yeah yeahs" in the second half just sent goosebumps down my spine.

That I've seen myself in concert - The Who playing Won't Get Fooled Again in 1998. The tension during the synth section at the end before the drums (and Daltry's scream) come crashing back in was immense.

That I've seen on DVD - David Gilmour playing Echoes at the Gdansk concert.

The best performance, regardless of whether I saw it or not:  The "In The Cage" medley on Three Sides Live album (the video is from a different night).

Seeing "Life Without You" live by Stevie Ray Vaughn was mind-blowing.

Don't leave out the best part! The Townshend knee slide, which he is still doing in his 70s!!

I grew up with a lot of Dire Straits (thanks, dad!) and their version of Sultans of Swing from 'Alchemy' is brilliant. The extended outro solo part is just epic.

Saw Dire Straits on the Brothers in Arms world tour in Darwin, Australia in 1986. That would be in my top 10 - 15 concerts of all time. Outdoor concert and bucketed down with rain. It was touch and go wether they would lay, but play they did and it was awesome. Telegraph Road and tunnel of Love in particular were superb as was the closer, Going Home. Still didn't even come close to Awaken at the Yes concert I mentioned in my previous post. (The performance of And You And I at the same show was also jaw dropping). Nothing I've seen before or since even came close to that show, and as I said in my last post, over the years I've managed to tick most f the acts on my bucket list off.

That's holy grail shit right there.   Had I known when we talked, I would have probably taken all five minutes on questions about that concert.  :)

70's style, mostly because I love when bands jam the shit out of their songs.

Lazy - Deep Purple
In Memory of Elizabeth Reed - Allman Brothers Band
No Quarter - Led Zeppelin
Freebird - Lynyrd Skynyrd
Scarlet Begonias -> Fire on the Mountain - Grateful Dead

In Memory of Elizabeth Reed - Allman Brothers Band

I almost put this too.  I saw a 45-minute version in Hartford back in the mid-90's when Warren and Dickie were in the band.   That 45 minutes went by in what seemed to be a flash.

Great question but tough to answer.

With a gun to my head I would pick No Quarter by Zeppelin.

However In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed is way up there and when Journey was in their prime with Perry you could just about pick
any song but Faithfully, in front of thousands is also way up there.

I'm partial to the Death On The Road version.

I dont know, the crazy crowd sing a long from the RiR version is what sold me on IM.  I was a casual fan until I heard that (which adds some nostalgia to it for me).  I think the performance on DotR might have been better though.  Both are great overall.

For me, it's got to be Alter Bridge's Blackbird.  I had my hearing issues, from time to time in the night, when I saw them live in LA in 2014, but when they played Blackbird, I had no hearing issues at all throughout those eight minutes.  They just played that song as perfection as it can be on that night (heck, many Alter Bridge fans may feel this way as well when they hear Blackbird live).

For us Aussies, NZ doesn't count, but for what it's worth - yeah they even went there as well. March 1/2 Auckland, March 4 Wellington, March 7 Christchurch.  :)

Just noticed the typo  - Fixed!  :)
