Scores! This time it's not a joke!!

Or is it....

twosuitsluke: Leprous - Third Law

I think people have sent me this band before with similar results. I like the intensity of this song and some of the melodies, particularly the chorus however as with much of the prog metal this days it seems to me like they're trying too hard which makes it sound forced. Aside from those little things I liked this song has nothing social to offer to me

Score: 4

Scar: Opeth - Harvest

I had listened to heritage and enjoyed it a bit but never gave a chance to their previous stuff because I was warned it was mostly growling. This song doesn't have those which is good but unfortunately it doesn't have much to offer either. The acoustic guitar melodies are nice and enjoyable but overall the song has this depressing atmosphere to it that just bums me.

Score: 3

TAC: Heart Of Cygnus - Sailing North

This is fun. At first I was worried that I would get tired of this song but after many listens it stays as fun as the first time. Even though it’s quite simple it keeps me entertained and wanting to sing the chorus each and every time, great song to rock live. It also has a nice instrumental section in the middle that is pretty good and fits the song perfectly. All that being said, this song should finish at the 4 minute mark, everything that comes after seems very out of place and really brings the song down. Given the name of the album and the song I gather this is a concept album so given more context it might work, but as a standalone song it doesn’t.

Score: 6

Big Hath: Thank You Scientist - Suspicious Waveforms

Now this song is fun in a way it had me dancing a bit while listening to it. It's not easy to find a modern band that can mix jazz with other styles in such a good way. The instrumentation is all over the place but in a good way, specially the trumpet and that's weird for me cause I usually don't enjoy wind instruments so much. A special mention to the guitar solo as well, while it diverts from the jazzy/funky vibe it still fits perfectly well. I'm not a fan of the ending of the song but it's not so bad as to ruining it for me.

Score: 8

Train of Naught: Ivar Bjørnson & Einar Selvik's Skuggsjá - Skuggsjá

There are a lot of elements in this song that I like, the main one being the intro, so smooth and peaceful however this is clearly one of those songs that I can only truly enjoy if I'm in the right mood. I listened to it yesterday night while going back home, it was dark and a bit cold, not many people on the streets and at that particular moment the song clicked with me on many levels. The other listens didn't have that impact. Still, the string melodies all over the song are quite good, the vocal melodies as well but not so much the recited words, that was a weird fit in the song.

Score: 5

Fluffy Lothario: Tangerine Dream - Movements of a Visionary

Strangest song of the round by far. I had heard of these guys but never got to listening to them. I feel like this is a great song to listen to while watching a live ISS feed because it's so dreamy at times and sci fy esque. The core of the song is pretty good with the synth melodies creating a soothing atmosphere but at the same time doing a great job at not being boring. The random sounds here and there sometimes work and sometimes don't but overall it was enjoyable on every listen.

Score: 6

Tomislav95: Alter Bridge - Blackbird

This song is not bad but it doesn't do anything for me. Good intensity and some nice melodies in the little instrumental break but overall quite forgettable.

Score: 4

Sacul: Gazpacho - Chequered Light Buildings

This is one of those songs that's all about the mood but when you pay attention to it there are lots of small details that are really good. The piano is the star of the song driving with a beautiful melancolic melody, the strings behind it providing an excellent support. Unfortunately for the song it goes down when the distorted guitar comes in because it breaks the great mood they created. I wish they had worked on that initial part a bit more, I really enjoyed it.

Score: 5

King: The Fringe - Flare

I never know what to expect out of supergroups, sometimes they are amazing but other times they disappoint so much. This is somewhere in the middle, it has a bunch of really good things like Nick’s drumming which is usually great, the melodies are quite nice and the vocals also stand out a lot. However this song suffers from trying to do too much which is reflected in the long instrumental in the middle, it kind of comes out of nowhere and bares no relation to what comes before or after. It has some good moments but overall it brings the song down.
Had you stayed with the single edit version you could have gotten another point.

Score: 6

Elite: Agent Fresco - See Hell

I had many change of hearts with this song. Every listen was quite different which speaks really good about it.  I'm not a fan of the singers voice but I am of the rest of the song. I have a hard time pointing out something specific about it, it just seems to me that the song overall is well crafted, time signatures being handled really good and the instruments fitting each other.

Score: 7
