Can I send you a song even though I'm not participating

Hmm, I was going to say yes but then I thought you might take away a band that one of the current participants could send and that wouldn't be fair. But, I will let you send one during the last round if you're interested.

As promised, here are Round 3 results

Tomislav95: Okkervil River - For Real

This is a nice song. I like the overall feeling it generates, smooth and peaceful even though it has some sharper things in it. I’m not very fond of the singer here, in the smoother parts his voice is really nice but when he goes to the higher tones his voice breaks a bit and kills it a bit for me. I’m not a big fan of the guitar effect they use but again, nothing that messes the overall song too much.

Score: 6

Fluffy Lothario: Ben Howard - Promise

Now I’m really digging this one, the mix of smooth guitar, the water sounds and the mix of voices makes this for such a soothing and relaxing song. I also like that it doesn’t stay in that initial and simple melody but it builds up on that, changes the melody and the string arrangements come in to give it another edge. Really beautiful song.

Score: 8

King: Aisles - Sorrow

Another soothing and relaxing song with very nice guitar melodies and great vocal melodies as well. I specially like that the percussion is a bit busy but fits perfectly the song not breaking that nice relaxing mood. Even when it picks up and gets a little more intense it still manages not to break the mood. Everything falls in place here really, great song.

Score: 8

Train of Naught: Skyharbor - Patience

I think I got something from these guys before but I remember it being metal as fuck, maybe my memory is playing games with me. Anyways, another beautiful and peaceful song with great melodies and string arrangements. This one has a higher tempo than the previous ones and has a “heavier” guitar but still manages to calm me down and let me get into the flow easily. I really enjoy the chorus in this one, that’s my favorite part of the song because of how the vocal melodies and the guitars interact, plus those guitar melodies are quite beautiful.

Score: 8

TAC: Glass Mind - Haunting Regrets

Another metal song that I find to be OK, it has some nice keyboard melodies throughout the song and some parts of the instrumental in the middle are nice but I think in the end that instrumental suffers from trying to do too much, at some point it just feels like they’re trying to show off and that throws me off. Overall I wouldn’t say it’s a bad song, but I wouldn’t say it’s a good song either.

Score: 5

twosuitsluke: Danzig - Her Black Wings

Well, I can see the Elvis comparison here, this guy’s voice is fucking powerful and he knows very well how to use it and I think he chose the right kind of music to take advantage of it. However as great as that is, the music on the back is pretty boring to me. I’ve never been a fan of music where the vocals are the central part of the song and the rest of the band just sets the stage for the singer to shine. Not a bad song, but not my cup of tea

Score: 5

Big Hath: Speaking to Stones - Water

This song has a great buildup. It starts very calm and slowly picks up, never too abruptly and always maintaining a similar mood, that’s something I really appreciate. I really enjoyed the drumming and the chorus here, the first standing out because he manages to do lots of interesting things without being excessive, the second one because it’s really nice. I do find some of the guitar arrangements here and there to be a bit cringe worthy and breaking the flow of the song a little bit, the solo also seems a little excessive to me and messes up with the flow as well, but overall I like this song.

Score: 7

Sacul: Sufjan Stevens - John Wayne Gacy Jr

This song is so solid, I like everything about it. The melodies, the mood, the contrasts, even the lyrics which normally I don’t pay a lot of attention to. And of course I love how strong a feeling it generates. I just wish it was a little longer so I could enjoy it more. I think there are very few songs that deserve a 10 and this is not one of them, but it comes pretty close.

Score: 9

Scar: Chevelle - Shot from a Cannon

I’m really not a fan of slow tempo metal like this, specially that bass guitar which sounds pretty powerful but it’s not really my cup of tea. Sorry dude

Score: 2

Elite: Groove Therapist - Mr. Funker

I have very mixed feelings with this song. On one hand I enjoy the funky/groovy mood of the song and I like that they are able to mix it with prog structure, it actually had me dancing here and there. On the other hand, I get a bit thrown off by that same great instrumentation because the song loses it’s flow right after the chorus which is a shame because I really enjoy the chorus. I’m also thrown off by those laughs right before the chorus, they seem so out of place. So overall there’s a lot that I like about the song but there are some things that kill the song here and there, specially the ending, it seems so out of place.

Score: 5

That Ben Howard song is from his debut, which is all over the place stylistically. There's quieter stuff, louder stuff, happy stuff, sad stuff, quite poppy stuff, deep cuts. I guess he was tossing ideas around to find his style. It's all good, just don't expect an entire disc of that, is all I'm saying.

His second album is much better, more unified, and goes much deeper, but it takes more listens to sink in, hence why I didn't send something off of that.

Yeah most of their songs are djent and reasonably heavier instrumentally, but they still make some solid atmospheric progressive metal imo. As far as I'm concerned, Patience is their best song though.

Sending for the next round right now!
