Which guitar solo of these 3 do you prefer?
« on: October 17, 2016, 06:41:01 PM »
Ok, so for some reason, I wanted to hear their three of their five 20-29 minute epics and I've been falling in love and catching on with the three I listen on the poll. Which out of those three guitar solo's do you prefer?

The introduction for ITPOE, and the outroduction for 8VM and The Best of Times.

I'm kinda thinking The Best of Times will get the majority of the vote, but I really think ITPOE is THE strongest Petrucci solo out of Dream Theater. To each their own. Even though all three have mood, I think ITPOE has the "strongest" feeling it brings. I love all three to death, but I never get bored and I never can't stop listening to ITPOE. Anyone else agree? Disagree?

Also, is In the Presence of Enemies one song or two songs? I like to think of it as a one, whole song because the band recorded it as a whole, but split it up due to time.

Even though Octavarium is my favorite full song and has a glorious guitar solo, the solo in The Best of Times is John Petrucci's best IMO.

Octavarium is the best song for me, but The Best Of Times has the best guitar solo.

I'm probably in the minority but I chose ITPOE. As you said, the intro is awesome. I like the heavyness and JLB's vocals. I can play this one everyday

I don't like Octavarium although I prefer the live version.

I can only listen to The Best of Times under a certain mood.

The only two songs of those I listen to on occasion are 8vm and Best of Times. Every time I listen to Best of Times, I realize it's just for the guitar solo.

So I'll go with 8vm. Good song.

ITPOE has an amazing guitar lead, although the other two slightly top it. TBOT is a killer solo, but the buildup of the Octavarium solo is perfection. Octavarium it is.

Yep. I think the only party in the MP/DT situation that hasn't moved on is DTF.

The Best of Times solo is probably my favorite guitar solo ever, so I voted for it.

Oh snap, read this as songs, not solos.

Going Best of Times for solos, but 8vm comes next.

One song. But I don't think time was the issue here. They split it because they thought it worked great both as an opener and as a closer for the album, plus they'd already made a 24-minute epic to close the previous album, Octavarium.

I voted for Octavarium, btw. Greatest album closer of all time.

Easy one for me - The Best Of Times

The rest of the song could have benefited from some editing, but that solo is one of the best.

This.  Easily.  But I do really like the ITPOE intro solo.  I could not ever hear TBOT again (including the solo) and not miss it.

Octavarium, easily.
Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

As I love all 3, I'm gonna have to go with Octavarium also. I just think the music of the song is stronger than the others which elevates the solo and finish.

I always thought of the RR solo on 'Tonight' when I heard the The Best of Times, which might be my fav. Randy solo, plus I remember them playing a part of this video during the intermission of DT12 show and the crowd went NUTS!

Third would be ITPOE, but they're all great!

Octavarium in Score is my favorite JP solo. It has fierce, melody and epic.

I'm with you on ITPOE I love his emotion in that lead, and tone. Cool they brought it back for the outro as a vocal melody.

TBOT...don't care much for the song as a whole but that solo has so much emotion...
The ending of Octavarium is extremely close though. The main reason I picked TBOT is that in Octavarium, for me at least, part of what makes that ending so epic is the orchestra. The guitar solo is still awesome regardless but the orchestra adds a lot to that section.
