Twosuitsluke's First Ever Roulette v. Final results are in....
« on: October 12, 2016, 04:02:09 PM »
Come one, come all (within reason) here it is, my first roulette.

Don't get too excited as it can all go very wrong from here on out.

I formally invite you to join for fine conversation, half assed write ups and the possibility of gaining a win. Yay!

Sooooooooo, as this is my first roulette, and I only realised today that I was next in line, I will do my best to keep this thing running smoothly. I am going to try to sort out all themed rounds, bonus points and the general flow of the roulette but apologies if anything changes slightly as we go (after all....it's just entertainment folks).

My plan is to have 10 participants (if I can draw a crowd that is) but could be a little flexible. I am also thinking of doing 10 rounds.

My Tastes

A little (apologies if it becomes a lot) about my tastes. So I started off listening to Hip Hop at about 16 and listened to that for at least a few years until I heard Metallica and Green Day roughly around the same time. I got into all the popular punk bands at the time (Blink 182, Sum41, Less Than Jake) but also became obsessed with Metallica. I developed my taste in punk rock (in particular ska punk) but also moved onto all the great  metal bands (thanks to my older brother) like Megadeth, Slayer, Sepultura, Pantera. I had a love for thrash. I then started getting into the popular metal bands at the time (this was around 2004/5) like Trivium, Lamb of God, Avenged Sevenfold etc. I did a load of travelling and by about 2012 I'd kind of stopped discovering new music. Somehow, in 2014, I rekindled my love for Dream Theater (I'b been a fan since about '06) and found this site. The rest is history and I have discovered a whole host of new bands and fallen in love with progressive metal more than ever I suppose.

How that effects this roulette is to be seen. I love Progressive Metal but that's not all I'm looking for. I still have a love for punk (I kinda go through phases, as we all do).

In regards to genres of metal, I have kind of got bored of straight forward metal as it all feels too similar but you can always try yur luck, I am a sucker for a good guitar solo.

I like a bit of Death Metal and prefer the classic bands like Death, Obituary etc.

I prefer Symphonic Black Metal bands like Dimmu Borgir when it comes to Black Metal.

I like me some Doom/Stoner Metal.

I like some Power Metal but can be quite picky, most of the Power Metal I listen is stuff I got into years ago, the last Power Metal band I got into was Angra and they are the first in about 8 years so this may be a bit of a gamble.

I like some folky kind of music but most of the folk I listen to is stuff which is folk with a punk rock attitude, like Frank Turner and Larry and his Flask.

I'm not particularly a fan of electronic music but there are a few exceptions, such as Nine Inch Nails, Prodigy, I used to listen to a bit of Pendulum.

I love orchestral music and especially orchestral renditions of video game music (such as Nobuo Uematsu's Distant Worlds).

I find with music that my ear is generally drawn to the sound of the electric guitar predominantly, I love it. Drums are a close second and as such, I find that music is the most crucial part for me. Lyrics and vocals are not generally what I focus on and I often don't even know the full lyrics to lots of my favourite metal songs. Again there are exceptions. I love bands such as The Dear Hunter mainly for the vocals and lyrics, which is easier as there aren't so many guitar/drum parts that my ear focuses on. Punk rock is another genre where lyrics are more important. I really enjoy singing along to my favourite songs and really belt them out whenever I can. Music really lifts my spirit and that is why I love it so much. There is no better feeling than singing your heart out to your favourite song (maybe air guitar is second, yes I'm a loser). This is why I have added the sing-a-long round, I want to hear some songs with great vocal lines, melodies, choruses.

This thread I started a few months back might help with my tastes as well:

Right, I think that is it. There are probably a few typos in here so apologies for that.

If I have forgotten to mention anything in this OP then please let me know so I can add any information.

Once we have enough participants I will it you know and then you can send ok.

Good luck to you all, but mainly to me.

Prepare to have the songs you love dissected and rated in ways you can only begin to hate  :|

But seriously, good to have you on board Scorp.

I will admit early on that my write ups won't be anywhere near as detailed as Parama's in his roulette. That shit looks tiring  :lol

I'll look into it. :tup So the red bands, are they mostly banned because they're popular bands and you don't feel like getting bands whose name you've already seen around too much? Or do you actually know and like their music? There's no need for me to base a submission on something that's on your banned list if you do not like said band, that's why I'm asking

So all the bands are the banned list are bands I know, like and own at least one of their albums. I mainly highlighted the popular DTF bands because the banned list is quite long and I thought it would just make it easier for you guys to spot if a band you wanted to send was banned or not.

I'll take it. If there is one thing I have learnt from frequenting DTF it is that, even with the bands I share in common with people, the songs I love are rarely the ones that are considered their best.

No genres of metal are off limit either. Nothing is too heavy or too weird. I've heard some pretty weird shit over the years.

I will say that I'm generally not a fan of really depressing music. I don't mind it but I'm not one of these guys who can listen to depressing stuff all day.

I also don't really want you guys to play it too safe. I mean it's up to you of course but I respect risk takers.

Ok, all you guys are in and more than welcome. That's the full 10 now. If anyone else is desperate to join then I might consider it. Otherwise, we are good to go.

You can all start sending your submissions now  :corn

You may have to bear with me on this first round as I need to figure out the easiest way for me to listen to everything. I normally play all my music through my iPod, which won't really work for this. I will use Youtube mainly I think but I also have Spotify on my phone which I can use to listen when I'm away from a computer. However, as I only have the free Spotify it's not perfect. Either way, I'll work it out.

I'll start listening once I have all the songs in.

Come at me!!

i like to plan in advance so can you clarify what exactly you're looking for with the round 6 theme? as a person who doesn't and hasn't ever watched wrestling i really don't know what you're going for there  :P
I havent either but I know altet bridge's metalingus and the john cena theme so im just sending a remix of those two songs combined :corn

Will send when I arrive at schtop, my luke spotify playlist is pretty big already :corn

Think of it as a song that is almost a bombastic statement about who you are  :lol

Or think of it this way, if you starred in an action movie this song would be your soundtrack. That sort of thing, you don't have to over think it. Something that personifies you in song form, just humour me  :corn

@Elite, you can join if you want dude  one more song per round won't hurt.

If anyone else does want to join though I may do a preliminary round with eliminations.

Has anyone spotted any missing information in my OP about rules and the structure of this thing? I'm bound to have missed something.

Also, has anyone actually read my whole OP  :lol it's pretty long winded  :loser:

As you can see from my banned list there are some post rock/metal bands that I listen to. I must admit I've not listened to a post rock/metal band yet that I have become obsessed with. I mean I don't mind it but I don't listen to a whole lot. Sometimes I think I like the idea of it more than the actual music.

You should definitely take a gamble though as you might find the first band that really wins me over to post rock.

I will say that I have no problem with atmospheric music but it's got to have something that grabs me. If it borders on becoming background music then I usually lose interest and it doesn't do a whole lot for me.

Thanks! You'll definitely get some post-rock then, the first round however, I'm going to send an amazing band that's somehow missing on your banned list  :omg:

Sweet, there's probably quite a few. Fill my gap  :lol

Also, to add to the post rock/metal thing. I'm interested in bands like Alcest at the moment (apologies if I've spoiled someone's surprise as I'm kinda expecting to get this band during the roulette) but have only heard a few songs.

Thanks for the invite! Do you by chance maintain a last.fm profile or something like that so we might narrow down choices more? Will send first round ASAP.
