Giraffe Tongue Orchestra (new supergroup)
« on: October 03, 2016, 10:37:20 PM »
Looks like these guys need their own thread! Giraffe Tongue Orchestra is: William Duvall (Alice in Chains), Ben Weinman (The Dillinger Escape Plan), Brent Hinds (Mastodon), Pete Griffin (Zappa Plays Zappa), Thomas Pridgen (The Mars Volta).

I've been listening to their album, Broken Lines, for the past week or so. Supergroups typically result in inexplicably bland music, but this one seems pretty damn good so far. There is definitely a Mastodon sort of feel to a lot of the guitar parts, and it's nice to hear William Duvall spread his wings a bit since he doesn't really get to do that much with Alice in Chains. He sounds great on these songs.

The album is on Spotify for anyone interested in checking it out.

Really enjoying it so far.  :metal
Controversial opinion: this album just might be better than every other album any of its members have ever been a part of.

I'm not willing to go that far. :lol I like having Brent Hinds and William Duvall paired up, though, because while I like Mastodon, I think their vocals are pretty subpar.

It took me a few listens but its pretty damn good! Particularly the first half for me is kicking. I think many people expected given the members of the band coming from Mastodon, DEP, TMV, AIC that it'd be crazy heavy-proggy thing. I wish they'd have maybe experimented a little more but there's some really cool shit in here.

Yeah I'd not go that far at all but it is really good! I dig Mastodon's vocals actually over time. I like how they all kind of have their own parts in it now. I don't think I could ever listen to a whole album of Hinds as -lead- vocal but he does some really magical stuff on record with backing vocal parts (as in "No-One Is Innocent" on this album).
