Videos were marketing for bands in the 80's. No band worth their salt wouldn't use that medium to put their product out there.

Very true, but I don't think it's fair to say that videos are the only reason certain artists survived.  Guys like Joel and Springsteen can thank videos big time for helping them survive, but without them, I don't think either would have seen their careers die.
