Bands whose debut is their worst album ?
« on: September 08, 2016, 03:52:05 AM »
This should be a bit easier...

Bands whose debut is either their worst album or they improved upon dramatically.

First choice is obviously Dream Theater with When Dream & Day Unite.

Far better things were to come.

Ride The Lightning and Master of Puppets are far superior to Kill Em All...

Dookie is a huge step up from 39 Smooth and Kerplunk! and they went on to also release American Idiot.

I would put Iced Earth on this list.
Musically it's not their absolute worst, but the vocals and production makes it unlistenable for me.

Alice Cooper - Pretties For You (although I really like the album)
Ark - Ark
Iced Earth - Iced Earth

maybe Leprous

Planet X - Universe (Live From Oz, Moonbabies and Quantum are better)
Porcupine Tree - On The Sunday Of Life
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum - Grand Opening And Closing
Steven Wilson - Insurgentes (maybe controversial)
Symphony X - Symphony X

Avenged Sevenfold is the first band that comes to mind. The addition of Synyster Gates on lead guitar after the recording of Sounding the Seventh Trumpet was monumental. His technical ability, jazz influences, and most importantly his harmonic mastery brought a whole different dimension to the band's sound and took them to the next level. The first album is decent, but the music on Waking the Fallen, City of Evil, their self titled album, Nightmare, and to a lesser extent Hail to the King far exceeds what they accomplished with their debut.
People figured out that the white thing that comes out of cows' titties could be drunk, and the relation between sweet desires and women's bellies growing up for 9 months. It can't be THAT hard to figure out how a trumpet works.”

Symphony X for sure

And "Rocka Rolla" is a good album, but still the weakest from Judas Priest

Genesis

Pink Floyd

Whitesnake

Journey
Must've been Kwyji sending all the wrong songs.   ;D

The Black Crowes

Really?!?  I know it's been overplayed.  But, SYMM is an absolutely fantastic album.  IMO, that's about as close to a perfect album as they've ever made.

Sorry about that!  Everyone's definitely entitled to their own opinion.  Didn't mean to sh*t on yours.  I've just been on a big Crowes kick right now.  And, I can't get enough of that first album.

Can't believe this thread has hit 15 posts w/o mention of Radiohead.  I'm not one of those people that hate Pablo Honey, it has its own charm, reflects that era of music well, and it shows flashes of things to come (especially Blow Out)...but it is definitely the weakest thing in their catalog.

Biffy Clyro
Fair to Midland
Kaddisfly: although Did You Know People Can Fly? is still a good album
Mew: A Triumph of Man is still decent
Porcupine Tree
Pepe Deluxe

Shadow Gallery

this is my favorite Shadow Gallery release.

Digital Ghosts and Legacy I would put at the bottom of their catalog. Digital Ghosts doesn't even have Mike Baker, lol.

The only issue with the S/T debut album is the drum machine. But from a songwriting standpoint, I find it to be their strongest and most consistent record.

Anathema - Serenades
Beach House - Beach House
Converge - Halo in a Haystack
Cult of Luna - Cult of Luna
Deftones - Adrenaline
Neurosis - Pain of Mind
Porcupine Tree - On the Sunday of Life
Radiohead - Pablo Honey
Thrice - Identity Crisis
Tool - Undertow

Nirvana. One could argue Incesticide is worse than Bleach (I don't think so) but it's technically a collection of B-sides and not an album. Nevermind and In Utero easily blow Bleach out of the water, though.

Rush and Porcupine Tree
Absolutely.

Also, Led Zeppelin, Saxon and Van der Graaf Generator. There might be several more, it's not rare that the band's debut is their worst one.

I nominate Slipknot. Not that IOWA was light years better by any means but Volume 3 & All Hope Is Gone definitely were.

The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion or Amorica are my favorites.  The debut is great but they got so much better stylistically on subsequent albums.

Uh, Rush.  No.  Same with Zeppelin.

Totally agree with 'Pretties For You' (wow, that was hard to listen to for the first time when it came out on CD).

WDADU for DT is what I think of in a similar light as for a band called 'Smile' and their first (and only album).  A change in lead singers worked wonders.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smile_(band)

Worst for an 'artist' might well be Billy Joel.  I have never heard the original version, nor would I want to.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cold_Spring_Harbor_(album)

"Through an error in the album's mastering, the songs played slightly too fast, causing Joel's voice to sound unnaturally high (one-half of a semitone higher—Joel joked that he sounded more like one of The Chipmunks than himself). According to a long-standing rumor, when Joel first heard the finished product, he "ripped it off the turntable, ran out of the house, and threw [the record] down the street." Arthur "Artie" Ripp, owner of Family Productions and hence the owner of the original master tapes, was responsible for the production error, and the mistake cost him his friendship with Joel."
...going along with Dragon Attack's Queen thread has been like taking a free class in Queen knowledge. Where else are you gonna find info like that?!

I don't think it helped that the first Megadeth song I properly heard was Sweating Bullets.

I *think* I might have listened to United Abominations out of curiosity. . . But again it wasn't for me.

I know that album is not held in very high regard and Gears Of War especially stuck out as poor.

Yeah, your exposure has been bottom of the barrel.  :lol  But still, if Mustaine's voice is what put you off, even their best material probably isn't likely to do it for you.

I also disagree with Rush and Led Zeppelin.

The worst Zeppelin album is the last, not the first. ;)
