Just came back to say it's a great prog album. Production sounds a little...flat maybe? It's not bad by any stretch. Just not as big and sparkly as I like. For all I know they were going for a 70's retro sound, if that's true, they nailed it. Other than that minor gripe it's pretty killer musically and I know I'll be listening to it pretty regularly over the next month or so. I can tell after one listen that I'm going to need at least 7 or 8 trips through the entire thing to completely grok it. It's pretty dense. I like that
The musicianship here is really, really good. Especially the guitar. I like that the sounds, styles, keys, time signatures are all over the map across the entire album. One of my biggest gripes about prog bands in general is the "sameyness" that you get with too many of them. I don't think this band has to worry too much about that.
I guess I'd call it a cross between Umphrey's McGee and Steven Wilson and Riverside musically. Maybe a few nods here to Pink Floyd as well.
Vocally, I wasn't sure at first but now I'm pretty much in awe of this guy.
He's got "it" I think of it as "subtle intensity." His vocals pull you in with his soft, easy delivery but as the music intensifies...Let's just say he's way better than the first track on the album suggests.
Too early to rate it but it's gonna be at least a 3.5/5 maybe 4/5
