I'm going with a very recent one, I could list like 20, but this one just hit me so hard when I heard it for the first time a couple weeks ago:

Steven Wilson - Routine
this song is just too depressing for me, I can't stand it

I'll throw in also:

Fates Warning - Wish
Redemption - Say Something (from Redemption's latest album), bonus track on the 2CD edition.

This one was actually probably the only song ever where the music video made me appreciate the song more, that never happens. It's so damn depressing :( :(

Similarly, only with The Raven That Refused To Sing.

Anyways, my song is Play Crack the Sky by Brand New. There's a certain part of that song that emotional resonates with me in a very specific way and I can barely listen to the song because of it.

Joanna Newsom - Sawdust and Diamonds.

Could write an essay on how important this song has become to me over the year.

The first one that comes to mind is Golden Slumbers by The Beatles.

If this song was longer it would probably be my favorite Beatles song. Such a beautiful song.

Adagio for Strings - Samuel Barber
First one that comes up to mind.

However I was going to post the choral version of it, "Agnus Dei". I think it has an even deeper, sadder touch than the Strings version. I even try not to listen to it because it gets me everytime I do.

There's a couple really but in the past few years it has to be Lightning Song by Anathema. Lee's singing along with the violins is one of the most beautiful things I've ever listened to.

DT - Breaking all Illusions  The song clicked for me the first time.  So many emotional moments musically and lyrically.

Btw I do not have the DVD of adtoe.  Was BAI the song with the young lady crying?

The first line already hits me, getting all depressed. Trent Reznor is a master in making songs out of depression and hate, it`s scary how hard his lyrics hit me emotionally. I could basically list almost all of the NIN discography.

Almost wrote down that one instead of Routine. Easily one of my favorite covers ever though I hate myself for not being able to appreciate the original as much.

I think the original makes more sense in the context of the concept of the album, the character speaking from the grave and reflecting over his miserable life.

Coheed And Cambria - Mother Superior

I don't know what it is about this song, but it's one of the only three songs that have ever made me tear up. Music doesn't usually evoke strong emotions in me, but this song definitely does.

Andante from Rachmoninov's Sonata in G Minor for Cello and Piano. Purely instrumental music never strikes an emotional chord with me often, but this is something else. I don't know what it was inspired by, but it just sounds like a life falling apart... Maybe not something quite so depressing though. Either way, the climax near the end, with the piano ascending and then descending delicately destroys me, and I love it.

In contrast of musical era perhaps, Subterranean Homesick Alien by Radiohead. Such a beautiful portrayal of dissociation, disconnection, desperation. Not really sure how else to describe it.

I've always equated that part with finally letting go. Gives me chills every time.
would have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related

TAC got a higher score than me in the electronic round? Honestly, can I just drop out now? :lol

Yes I actually did, but I somehow prefer the original. Trent Reznor`s vocals are just amazing to me in terms of how desperate he sounds while singing.

Like so many people have said, I could list so many. I shall only list one, though, as requested in the OP.

The Firebird Suite, Stravinsky

Just thinking about the end crescendo of the Suite gives me chills and a lump in my throat. It's one of the most haunting, inspiring, depressing, and gorgeous classical pieces I have ever heard. I'm usually in tears by the crescendo because it's just that good and it hits me in all of the feels. It's not so much the beauty of the piece - it's the buildup and the journey to the gorgeous end.

Gosh, I have a lump in my throat just POSTING this.
