Idioglossia - Pain of Salvation.

Good luck with the intention of the thread. You know most people will list 10+ songs.

Definitely my favorite song in general, but I can only listen to it on occasion because of how powerful it is. I'm pretty sure I shed a tear or two every time I hear it.

Black Label Society - The Blessed Hellride

It's a song I got in to just before my dad died. Like days before. Then I saw Black Label Society a week after he died (between his death and his funeral). They encored with it. I wept just like a baby.

(as I lay awake in bed)
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

The song that started it all for me and began my own musical journey.

Alter Bridge's Open Your Eyes.  Such a good timeless song to me.

I could probably choose hundreds. I cannot choose only one. So here are a few.

Subdivisions-Rush. I've told Geddy so many times he's sick of hearing about it. I grew up during my final teen years on a dead end street in the suburbs on the edge of my hometown. At nighttime there was one streetlight a few houses away.  Towards the NW was only darkness and the night sky that seemed to go on forever. It truly gave the illusion that I lived on the edge of nowhere. To the SE was the constant glow of the big city. I used to sit on quiet, cold winter nights and dream about all the amazing adventures that I was going to have once I got out of that little town. When that song first came out, it touched my very soul. To this day, each time I hear it, I'm transformed back to the sights, sounds, smells, and emotions of that time. I'm a firm believer that stuff happens for a reason. That God, or the Great Electron in the sky, or whatever has a plan he or it only shares occasionally with us. I believe that there was a reason that song touched me the way it did, and I later not only met, but befriended Ged and Alex. Ged calls it "Tsufal", which is supposed to mean coincidental or something.

Wasted Time- Eagles. To me clearly Don Henley at his very best. And I've lived that same heartache more than once.

Let It Be- Beatles. Blows me away every time I hear it. Instantly takes control over whatever emotion I'm feeling at the time.
You don't HAVE a soul.You ARE a soul.You HAVE a body.

Long, Long Time, by Linda Ronstadt. A beautiful song, masterfully sung, and reminds me of all the girlfriends, and even friends, I have lost over the years.

Of course looking back, all those friendships and crushes seem so juvenile and silly, but as Gordie says in Stephen King's The Body, "I never had any friends later on like the ones I had when I was 12." Maybe that is true of our first loves too.

Black by Pearl Jam
Thread was pretty much over in the OP guys.

I don't think there's a piece of music that hits me harder than the Beautiful Jam.

The story goes that in the months after Garcia died, a journalist played this jam to Bob Weir, the rhythm guitarist, and he completely lost it and broke down in the middle of the interview.

Other than that, I could have picked one of many songs by Anathema.

Until The End Of Time -- Foreigner

I sang that to my wife at a party where my friends band was playing.  It's a great tribute to love and my love for her.

I don't want MP playing with DT unless they were making a drummer change. If they let MM go and bring back MP, then fine, but no guest appearance please.

Lipstick Sunset by John Hiatt

The subject matter, his raspy, gravely voice, the production on the instruments, that haunting slide guitar solo... this is just amazing.

Damn you.
