Good stuff in post MP period
« on: May 06, 2016, 04:20:32 PM »
I myself have had my frustrations with this period but there has been some great music.

What are your favourite parts? For me:

Bridges In The Sky
Beneath The Surface
Enigma Machine
The Looking Glass
The Enemy Inside
Surrender To Reason
Breaking All Illusions
The Gift Of Music
Our New World
The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing.

I'll back you up on that one. Though, it's Neal Morse, so that automatically equals gold for me.   :)

Far From Heaven and Breaking All Illusions are like the only two really good tracks tbh
Bridges in the Sky is cool too though

Breaking All Illusions, Bridges in the Sky
The Enemy Inside, Surrender to Reason, Illumination Theory (parts of it)
the whole of TA apart from a few filler tracks

Frankly none of the good things post MP are attributed to Mangini. While earlier I'd listen to DT songs mainly for the drums, now I just don't care about the drumming at all.

But, if it's to choose one song, my favorite post Portnoy is definitely Bridges in the Sky.

I think most of the songs from the three Mangini albums are really good/great.  There are a few bland tracks here and there (On the Backs of Angels and some of the middle of Act 2 of TA), but that's picking nits.

I will always prefer the MP era as there is just so much good material. With that said, the MM era has given us three great albums with so many amazing songs. My favorites are:

Bridges in the Sky
Breaking All Illusions
Beneath the Surface
False Awakening Suite
Surrender to Reason
Illumination Theory
Dystopian Overture
Three Days
A New Beginning
The Path That Divides
Our New World

Breaking All Illusions and Surrender To Reason has been the high points for me so far from the Mangini era.
Zydar is my new hero.  I just laughed so hard I nearly shat.

The era has provided two of my top three DT albums (ADTOE #1 and TA #3), and the second of those albums is very solidly in the upper-middle of that ranking.

I love DT with and without MP. Both "eras" have songs I've very fond of and songs I don't care about. Simple as that

The last 3 albums are my top favorite DT albums. So...everything in the post MP period has been amazing for me. Only exception really is the mixing and drum sounds, but I can forgive those things considering how awesome the music is.

I can't believe how much love ADTOE is getting. I think that was their worst album since WDADU. But I thought DT12 was better and The Astonishing better yet...and also a fantastic live show.

I love most of what they've done. The excitement for me has dropped a bit, but to be honest the quality in music has not. My favorite tracks from the past three albums:

On the Backs of Angels
Bridges in the Sky
Outcry
Beneath the Surface
False Awakening Suite
The Enemy Inside
Along For the Ride
The Answer
A Better Life
Lord Nafaryus
A Savior in the Square
When Your Time Has Come
Three Days
A Life Left Behind
Chosen
Moment of Betrayal
The Path That Divides
Hymn of a Thousand Voices
Our New World
Astonishing

This last album is just so good. Tough to pick out "favorites" because it all flows so nicely together.
I don't want MP playing with DT unless they were making a drummer change. If they let MM go and bring back MP, then fine, but no guest appearance please.
WELP.

It's pretty much been all good.  In fact, the only thing I haven't liked about this incarnation is the irrigidity/inflexibility of the live performances due to deciding to stick with click tracks.
Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

I hear you.  But on the upside:  I think people kind of picked up on MM's stress on the DT12 tour at times.  He and the rest of the band have now gotten so comfortable with the click that they really look and sound like they are having a great time.  I just saw them last night, and you could see and feel the joy that they all had being up there playing and performing, especially Mangini.

To answer the main question in the thread, pretty much all of it.  The MP era was fantastic.  But the MM era is as well.  Three fantastic albums and tours in a row now.  It is starting to feel like this is a band that just can't miss.

I am in agreement with Bosk that I appreciate both versions. The issue I have with ADToE and DT12 to a lesser extent is the
sonic quality of the CD's. They flat out got it right with TA and it sounds great. But frankly I'm still bummed about how ADToE
sounds and I wish it could be remasted and re-released in CD version to sound more in line with TA. There are some great songs
on that disc and if it sounded as good as TA I would spin it far more often.

Oh, yeah, I know all that.  But I meant that since they rely on the click track, nothing of an improvising or spontaneous nature is allowed to happen, and the setlists don't ever change.  That's all I'm saying.
