I'm following, but I think I'll sit this one out.

:( I'll miss ya but that's fine. I'm still listening to that amazing Joan Baez song. Didn't Seneca send you Tori in your roulette? If not I'm sending you Tori.

Actually, wait, I just remembered you also played in mine. Shit. I have to give this a shot I guess. :lol Or is it too late already?

Yeah, Nelson sent me Tori Amos - Winter. Amazing song. I haven't got around to check any roulette albums yet (except for The Crimson Idol by WASP), but I listened a few times to that double album I composed and that Tori Amos song was awesome on every listen.

Now that I've reviewed the banned list, it's about as eclectic as Dave's.  Since I seem to be doing ok there, I hope the same can be said as we progress here.

Round 7: Open

Submissions:
Spotify is absolutely ideal, but if there’s a song that isn’t on there, you can send me the youtube link. I do prefer spotify because I can easily make a playlist of the songs and listen to them in my car on the way to work (it is when I have the most time to listen, as my commute is hella long). I realize that dampens the headphone listeners, but too bad. Best I can do. But if you don't use spotify or do not have access to it in your country, youtube or mp3s are fine.

I'm holding a 12 minute maximum with two exceptions: Round 4, the short song round, has a 2 minute maximum. Round 10, the epic round, has no limit. I'll give and take 30 seconds or so, but I have 16 people to listen to at least for the first 4 rounds. So give me a break.

You can submit either through PM or by email at spencerlent (at) gmail (dot) com. If you are friends with me on facebook you can PM me on there too.

Ratings:
Songs will be rated out of 10. Just to give you an idea:
10/10 means this song just blew me away and will be on repeat even after the roulette is over
8/10 means this song is solid, not my favorite, but will enter regular listening rotation if the mood moves me
6/10 means this song is meh, just wasn’t strong… had a few moments, but overall monotonous or had nothing special that made it stand out
4/10 means this song wasn’t my cup of tea at all, it had a few moments, but overall nah
2/10 means I pretty much hated it, why did you send this

Bonuses:
Not going to lie, I liked Bolster’s idea here, so I stole it and adapted it. I’m not going to do the obscure color star (sorry, no chartreuse, cerulean, or puce stars), they are just going to be bonuses. You are allowed up to three bonuses in the roulette. Each bonus will get you one extra point. However, after all rounds are played, I will rank the bonus songs and give the top bonus song in each category one extra point. This may be important to those facing elimination.

String Ensemble/Solo
-Any song that has a significant part for a traditional string instrument or ensemble. NOTE: This means violin, viola, cello, double bass, harp. This doesn’t mean guitar, electric bass, or plucked acoustic bass like in jazz. The catch is they have to be the real instrument; none of this synthesizer shit. Believe me, I can tell.
Banned Examples: Glycerine by Bush, Rather Be by Clean Bandit
THESE ARE NOT ACTUAL STRINGS, SO NO BONUS: Six Degrees Album Version, The Odyssey by Symphony X

Brass Section/Solo
-Same as above but with a significant brass ensemble.
Banned Examples: Pretty much anything by Chicago or Earth Wind and Fire

Woodwind Section/Solo
-Same as above but with a signficant woodwind (i.e. sax or flute) solo/section.
Banned Example: Another Day by DT, Thick as a Brick by Jethro Tull

Multi-Vocalists/Choir
-More than one vocalist (choirs count!) is prominently featured in something MORE than only the chorus.
---Banned Examples: Battle Scar by Max Webster (Features Kim Mitchell and Geddy Lee), Like A Prayer by Madonna

Instrumentals
-Self Explanatory. If there’s an “ahhhh” or “Oooo” that’s vocals that’s more to provide ambience and is not prominently featured, with no distinct lyrics, that’s acceptable.
Acceptable: Cinema by Yes
Unacceptable: Duke’s Travels by Genesis

World Music/New Age Influence
This may kind of be sort of subjective on my part, but if it sounds that way (and you refer to it as such) I’ll count it. I really don’t have any preference, as I love world music. Could be anything from mariachi to Celtic to kabuki to African music. Many of the mainstream examples in the last few decades I am familiar with (i.e. Graceland by Paul Simon) so just be prepared for a resend if necessary.
Banned examples: Mummers Dance by Lorenna McKinnett, Return to Innocence by Enigma

Odd Time Signatures
I’m a theory nerd so I love odd (like something other than 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 6/8, or cut time) time signatures, especially 7/8 time. If a song has an extended section in this time signature you get this bonus. Now if it changes from 4/4 to 3/4 that doesn’t count… but if like the first half of the song is in 7/8 and the second is in 4/4 that’s fine. If you have no idea what I’m talking about, you may not be able to participate in this bonus star… don’t worry, there are 6 other categories!
BANNED EXAMPLES: Subdivisions, YYZ, by Rush, Awake and Nervous by IQ

I wanted to do something I hadn't seen in a roulette yet, and I realized that "Five Per Cent For Nothing" is one of my favorite Yes songs even though it's like 30 seconds long and I'm like what the hell I'm doing it :lol

I also, really randomly, like the band Anal C**t, and all their songs are like 20 seconds long, even though they just sound like noise and screaming, but a lot of it is satirical so I think that's why :lol

Yeah, no idea what I'm going to send for that. The 1960-1970 round will probably hurt me if I make it that far.

Just to be clear, these decade-spanning themes, they are two decades each? So round 2 is anything from 2000-2019 and round 8 1960-1979? The use of S's seems to imply this but I want to be sure.

Damn I had something great for the first open round planned but my optimal sub 2 min song is from that same band so I guess I'll hold on to it.

Does this mean the first round is open now?

Yes. These are decade spanning. I do know quite a bit from the 70s to the 90s, but there's always something new I haven't heard yet, as I heard through the championship roulette.

That was the first theme that jumped out at me as "WTF am I gonna send here?"... because pretty much everything I have sub 2 mins us an entry or segue track.  This shall be interesting.  Smart move to put it in the group of 16 though!

60s round ought to also be fun for some.  And by "fun" I mean "pretty fucking rough".   :lol  Hope I make it that far.

Edit ... damn, I was hoping it was a 60s only theme.  Bonus points should be handed out for hitting the 60s!

No kidding, I think I have to pay a visit to a local old folks home and sift through some LP's or something if I make it that far :lol Literally got nothing for that, good thing I have a good collection of sub 2 min songs though because this one's going to affect all 16 participants.

THEMES:
Round 4: Short songs (less than 2 minutes)
Was this by any chance inspired by the thread I made a wee while ago?

I was too shocked by the 2-minute-song to read any further at first, but I'm confident I have absolutely nothing for that 1960-1979 round. well, if I make it that far, google will be my friend. The rest seems doable, though. Will send in a minute.
