I don't think I ever realized that the album version of Purple Rain (as well as I Would Die 4 U and Baby I'm a Star) was mostly live, and that they tidied it up in the studio:

Holy shit. This year has been absolutely fucking brutal and it's still only mid-April.

I heard on Howard Stern that they had to make an emergency landing a few days ago because he was sick. They said it was just the flu....

Wow, that was surprising. Kind of sad to see all the heroes leave so early, I'm not even 30 yet myself. Luckily I had the chance to see him live in 2011, what a great performer.

rest in peace.

all over the media here in Minnesota.

unfortunately, I never did see him live, but I met him in person once, and it was probably the most starstruck moment of my life.

Cock?  According to Joe Elliott in "Let It Go" (...'and get ready for the big "C"'... Let it rock...'), the "big C" is "cock".

One of my favorites and a truly unique musician and singer. I was always blown away by his guitar chops too.

Sad day.

This is so out of left field that when the phone notification came up that police were investigating a death at the Prince estate, I assumed it was an older relative or at worst, a stupid scuffle that ended badly with some hanger-ons.  My only thought was I hope the superstardom doesn't get in the way of the investigation.

When it came back a few minutes later that it was Prince that died, it was like getting hit by a car in a cornfield.

As far as I know, Prince had cleaned up considerably since his kid died.

From what I'm hearing, it's more like what happened to Jim Henson...really REALLY sick and waited too long to be treated.

Oh well... a very complex artist, that always beat his own drum - for good or bad. Some amazing stuff - Paisley Park, 2131, Musicology... and an amazing guitar player. Amazing. One of the greatest.

Got texts from like four different people today, all within a 15-minute span.  Like him or hate him (and the stuff of his I like, I really, really like), he was a true musical force and a very innovative guy.  The music world just lost another great.  :(

TMZ just reported that his possible flu stop while on the plane was a drug overdose and they had to give him the "life shot". They got back on the plane and went back home. The stop on the plane was only a 40 minute plane ride from home.

This is starting to sound like the flu thing is "iffy"

I didn't really think it was from the flu. Even if it was from the flu, his body had to have been weakened by something else.

When I was driving back to home base today they mentioned briefly on the radio "world mourns Prince Rogers Nelson," so I naturally said "who the fuck is that? Prince of what?" It was a jazz station so I just assumed it was some old jazz cat and got on with my life. It wasn't until I overheard the 3rd or 4th conversation about it at the show that I figured it out.

Never cared for him.

Lighting up the bridge in purple is just a damned nice thing to do, and quite tastefully done. Props to the Minn HWY Dept.

Well, I'm still kind of numb. I wás a fan of his records and bought everything blind up until the Symbol nonsense.

Sure there was controversy (..) about his early lyrics and all, but the overall feeling was that he was a musical genious. You could make a stellar album out of all his early b-sidses.

This is turning out to be some annus horribilis.

Serious question: has anyone heard all of his studio albums?

All I've heard since yesterday is how everything he did turned to gold and whatnot, but I looked it up, and he had like 39 studio albums. Are you telling me every song on every album is pure gold?  I doubt that.  Don't get me wrong, I stand by my comment from yesterday about him being an innovative musical force, but this worship of him, like he was the greatest singer, greatest guitarist, greatest songwriter, etc. ever is a bit much.  It's typical when someone dies, of course, but I think a little perspective is in order.

I've never heard all his studio albums. However I do like the music I've heard.

I went to a drum clinic for a drummer who played for Prince and he said that 70% of music that Prince has made he didn't even release and just put into a vault.
