After listening to very little music the past few weeks, it's good to get back in with these two albums.

i think, that if i ever get into neurosis, it will be with this album. not as plodding or boringly heavy as the two before it, not as lifeless as the one after it, just right

This is seriously one of the best post-rock albums.

Yep! Just got it last week. I actually went through all of Coheed's albums in story chronological order, even though that probably didn't matter because I don't understand a lot of what goes on in the story, so this completes my journey (I got TCBTS a while ago). I'd say it's a satisfying conclusion.

Nice sig, btw :P

bent knee: hhhmmm. no. i don't think i really care for this. most of the songs don't feel like songs, just strings of musical ideas loosely tied together. eve especially, which is just 10 minutes of nothing happening. i don't hate it or anything but i'm not getting much out of this yet, it's kind of a slog
eight bells: this is cool. i like the first song the most probably (that riff <3) but it's all pretty cool, a unique sound to it too. i wanna keep listening to it
vektor: i dunno yet. i feel like i am just scratching the surface of this one right now. my current thoughts are: first three tracks are cool, middle three are just okay, last three are great, but that's like a "i feel like i've only listened to this once or twice" opinion, this is a bit out of my comfort zone i guess  :lol

How would you rate the albums? I for one really didn't enjoy TCBTS at all.
Also I still don't undestand the story even though I've heard all of the albums many times.  :lol I'm not a fan of comics so I guess it wont happen.

I've pretty much figured out the Afterman story and much of the GA1 story with a lot of help from the internet, but everywhere else I'm pretty much lost.

I like The Color Before the Sun pretty well, actually! It's very non-proggy, but I thought it was a pretty good album of radio friendly stuff. Particularly like Colors, Here to Mars and Peace to the Mountain.

My album ranking would probably be (and keep in mind that I've heard GA2 and YotBR only twice each, while I've heard both Afterman albums a ton, so this is very subject to change):

1. In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3
2. Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV, Volume One: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness
3. The Afterman: Descension
4. The Afterman: Ascension
5. Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV, Volume Two: No World for Tomorrow
6. The Color Before the Sun
7. The Second Stage Turbine Blade
8. Year of the Black Rainbow

I really didn't find much to like at all in YOTBR. I need to listen to it more (especially since I like all their other albums), but it just seemed pretty bland compared to their other stuff. My overall disappointment with that album on the first two listens led me to get SSTB, IKSOSE:3 and GA1 more quickly than I originally planned, and that kind of left YOTBR sitting on the shelf.

The story is all kinds of confusing and actually kind of dumb in places (and I'm saying that as a fan, C&C are my #3 band). Good Apollo 1 is where it starts to get really confusing and I don't even fully understand it. That's a pretty good ranking however I would always have the first 4 albums as my top 4. I don't mind TCBtS but it just doesn't have the depth of the other albums. It does what it says on the tin but I know in years to come it won't be one of the albums I come back to.

My ranking would be:

Good Apollo I
Good Apollo II
In Keeping Secrets
Second Stage Turbine
Year of the Black Rainbow
A: Descension
A: Ascension
Color Before the Sun

I like YotBR. It has some good ballads and some of my favourite individual songs. It's the last 3 songs that let the album down for me. They do zero for me!!

Amazing:
IKSoSE:3
GA1
SSTB
GA2

Good:
Afterman: Ascension
Afterman: Descension (after Gravity Union it doesn't do much for me)

Meh:
YOTBR
TCBTS

yeah, i'll admit that descension definitely drops off after gravity's union but that first 5 song run is awesome, and the last two tracks have their moments

GA1 i'd like more but it feels like it has more filler than the albums before or after it. who cares about always & never, crossing the frame, once upon your dead body, the lying lies, or mother may i

i certainly don't

I certainly do. Always & Never is my favourite ballad ever and the other three are great and certainly better than Wake Up and The Suffering.

This, basically. They don't live up to the first five, but I like all of the last four, especially 2's My Favorite 1, and those first five are so good that it makes up for it.

I agree with this to a certain extent. I really like Always and Never quite a lot, but I agree that some of those are less excellent than IKSOSE:3 is all the way through. I put it second for The Willing Wells in particular, and I like a lot of the other songs, but I could easily put it behind Descension. IKS is pretty easily my favorite at this point.

But I don't quite get it with SSTB—isn't that an album that really drops off about halfway through?

Anyway:

First time on Act IV. I'm less than halfway through, but so far this is shaping up to possibly be my favorite of their albums I've heard so far. Interested to see where Act V goes in just a month!

Honestly can't believe they're already releasing Act V, and from the songs released so far it's looking to maybe even be just as good as Act IV.

Really wish this band had more stuff like this, anything else I've heard didn't sound half as good.
people on this board are actual music fans who developed taste in music and not casual listeners who are following current fashion trends and listening to only current commercial hits.

Yeah, even the Last In Line album didn't exactly rip in the guitar department. It's a long time since those DIO albums.
