Phew, finished listening to all four albums.

Redemption - my favourite of the bunch and just an amazing album it seems, definitely going into my rotation. A lot to take in on the first listen, but I remember I really enjoyed Peel, Unformed and Keep Breathing. Obviously I knew Black and White World from the roulette and it's probably still my favourite track from the album. Love Kills Us All / Life in One Day will need more listens, I've heard a lot of good things about it but I don't think I could repeat any melody from it after one listen. Probably a grower.

DGM - well that's probably my well-known beef with Italian power metal talking, but I didn't find it really interesting or anything like that. There were some cool tracks - The Secret pt. 1, Ghost of Insanity (this one features Tom Englund on vocals and has that Evergrey vibe all around it, probably my favourite), and Daydreamer - and that's about it, other tracks were quite bland for me and I wanted to skip a few of them after a minute or two. Not a good sign for the album.

Sieges Even - this was also a lot to take in but I think I enjoyed every song. Great singer and I really like the acoustic guitar playing on the whole album. Very clean production too, just the kind of progressive rock I was looking to. This is definitely going in the rotation, I need to listen to it more. Favourite tracks so far were The Lonely Views of Condors (got this one in the roulette), Blue Wide Open and Lighthouse. While Snowfall on Judgment Day was my favourite from the bunch, I think this is the album I'm looking forward to spin again the most.

Sonata Arctica's Pariah Child - actually, the songwriting here is really good except for last two tracks which I mostly can't stand. What really brings the album down is the production, especially after the Sieges Even album where you could hear everything clearly. Here the production is just muddy. Still, some good tracks on this one - especially Blood which is easily Top 10 SA song for me. I think I'm a bit more pumped for their new album now.
This first band is Soen very cool swingy jazz fusion kinda stuff.

Not ab it fan of the Redemption, and that's not the best Sonata Arctica, but the other two are quality.

Ruslan, that Redemption is easily my fav and I can't remember if it wasn't a top 50 album for me, it was a top 60, it's incredible.

The Sieges Even is fantastic too, but does need multiple listens, I found it a real grower, beautiful album though.

Definitely going to spin that Sieges Even album more next week.

Today's playlist:

Kamelot for the ongoing survivor, Temperance for the upcoming review, Sonata Arctica for relistening to their whole discography before the new album is released, and Phideaux is here because I seem to be in the mood for something like that right now.

what i've been spinning this past week

cobalt: this is a cool sound in theory but there really is no reason the album needed to be this long. it waters down the entire experience, makes it hard for moments or songs to stand out or even be that memorable. maybe this just needs more spins tho
fallujah: my kneejerk reaction was to really love this but the issue that's popped up is that a lot of the more straightforward metal songs don't have much of an identity and i have trouble distinguishing them, but the sound as a whole is pretty cool
inter arma: yeah, this is the good stuff. the biggest issue i have is that the song does hold on that first heavy riff way too long, but that's like, the only issue i have with this at all tbh, otherwise it's pretty dang great

I've always disliked the singer's voice but I really want to give this band a real try because the title track is just out of this world.

I'll post my thoughts when I'll finish all these four albums.

All four are at least good, IMHO, but both the Redemption one and the Sieges Even one... Oooh...  :metal

Worth a listen Brent?

It's quality , mellow , atmospheric , relaxing melodic rock.   So next time you're on the couch in your dressing gown with a nice red and some bikkies and cheese...... ;D

It's getting mostly great reviews (return to the glory of the debut etc....) but it's not in that class IMO.   The good thing is that they have their own signature , Celtic tinged sound in tact but to me it's all too "samey" and gets a bit old by the end.   Unfortunately the return of Vinny Burns hasn't added the edge that I had hoped for and the songwriting isn't at the same level as their early material.

Yet another recent release in the "good , not great" category and a score from me around 80%

I only have Out of the Silence and it's great but this is kind of how I feel about it.  Didn't know Vinny Burns was back on this one, I'll have a listen, but I doubt I'm in the mood for this laid back style at the moment.

I listened to a teaser video of that new Dare with clips of most (all?) of the songs and I decided it wasn't for me.

Finally got around to giving this a listen. I liked it on first impressions. I found it easier to concentrate on the lyrics on this album with the less 'full on' sound. This is good as I've always liked the fact that they have lots of environmentally/socially conscious lyrics, this is something I feel I can relate to. I often have trouble concentrating on lyrics as my ear is usually drawn to the guitars more than anything.

Definitely a good first impression.

I don't think I understand a single sung line on this album without having to look up the lyrics. And I don't ever do that, so...  :lol
Really good album though, was spinning it earlier today.

REALLY?? I found I was able to make out more lyrics than on any of their previous albums. Not saying I can make out everything but it's definitely clearer. I don't think it's just a slightly different vocal approach, I just think the music is less distracting. Really good stuff though. About to give it a second listen in a minute.

Magnum - Escape From The Shadow Garden

Why not have my first taste of Magnum be a live CD. Pretty good stuff, and Bob Catley sounds amazing here.

I didn't check that live album.  The last few Magnum albums have been really average so I just didn't bother cause of the track list.

How is that King Diamond album?

Is it a greatest hits album? Likes like it by the cover. Hope 'Magic' is on there, probably one of my faves  :metal

Indeed it is just a best of, but I only picked it up cause I saw it instore.  Pretty standard, but it's cool to listen to a collection once in a while.  Sounds pretty nice though.  The track list is solid enough but could fit a lot more songs in and has some obscure choices IMO.
