Fates Warning marathon............the new one plus the 88-94 era that is the sweet spot for me. See where the new one fits in the pecking order.

What are the early returns on a rating for the FW Brent?

What are the early returns on a rating for the FW Brent?

I can't speak for Brent, but personally speaking, Theory of Flight is a 9.5 or higher. I'm really leaning towards the perfect 10/10 myself, but I'm going to withhold that score until I have a bit more time to digest the album. That said, there really aren't any weak tracks on the album and five or six of the eight tracks are all strong enough to become future classics from the band and staples in their live shows.

What are the early returns on a rating for the FW Brent?

I had forgotten how much I loved FW back in the 90s :)   The teaser releases really revived my interest with the nice combo of melody and heaviness.

The album requires more than the one full listen I have given it so far (some tracks are immediate , others not so much) - at this point I am not thinking top 2 in their discog but not far off.  As far as a rating goes , a starting point would be around 85% and we'll see how much higher I end up giving it.

As a comparison I was straight up into the 90's with SX's Underworld , so it'll need to grow on me a bit to beat that (not that it's 2016 , but a recent release from one of the "big boys")

I just think it's great that a band of this vintage is putting out music that is interesting , original and this good.    It's great having FW, SX and the 'Ryche firing like this.

Thanks MG and Brent!

Yeah I'm excited for this release and it is great having SX, QR and Fates firing on all cylinders. I really enjoyed Darkness and this sounds like a major upgrade from that, so this can't disappoint

follow-up:

baroness - this is a bit of an oddball in the baroness discography, its their only album that feels more album-oriented than song-oriented. there's like 7 full songs out of 12 tracks lol. but then a lot of those tracks are great tracks. jake leg and the gnashing especially, like hot damn.
canvas solaris - i was actually surprised, i figured it would be weaker than cortical tectonics but, no, i like this around as much as the atomized dream, maybe even more. the weird folky track is cool, and the two long tracks are great as well, especially the jazzy motif of the closer
jesu - i like this more than their debut mostly on the basis of it being shorter and not having a bad track like man/woman. it's fine. dunno if it's that memorable but it's pleasant.
thy catafalque - this is probably my least favorite of the three thy catafalque albums i have and neath waters is definitely a weaker epic but it's still pretty good overall. the opener especially is really vicious, and i like the idm flavor of the third track, and the doom metal fifth track, and the somber closer... yeah, it's still really good, just not as good

So apparently this dutch mathcore band called 'Mary Fields' is going to be the supporting act of the PTH/BTBAM show, I'll check it out today, have to deal with a lot of crazy music soon enough anyway :neverusethis:.

It's okay I guess. A bit too commercial at times and definitely worse than Sempiternal.

First time listening to Thank You Scientist. Really awesome album, I liked it a whole lot. Already planning to get their new one right when it comes out.

With Death Magnetic, trying the Mastered for iTunes version on Kotow's suggestion. Definitely worth it. I still definitely have a soft spot for this album. It's not their best album, but I'd rate it ahead of at least KEA, MOP, RL and SA. I think some of the songs just don't feel as lively as they could at times (That Was Just Your Life), but when they're on, they're as good as they've ever been. I think maybe the album starts slowly, and doesn't really get to full steam until Broken, Beat & Scarred. I like the first two, especially The End of the Line, but for some reason they just don't feel as energetic as others.

And to just throw more gasoline on the fire I may have started by saying I put DM ahead of MOP, I think Het's vocals on this sound better than they do on most songs of the 80s albums.
And if spirit's a sign,
Then it's only a matter of time

Asphalt Ballet...I used to listen to the hell out of them.

Murderer's Row..That looks like LaBrie on the left, Halford on the right, Johnny Lee Middleton in front, Bobby Blitz sitting behind him, and Bo Bice way in the back. I'm guessing that band is none of those people.  :lol

That's right, none of the above!
David Glenn Eisley from Giuffria, Bob Kulick on guitar, couple of blokes from Alcatrazz and the drummer from Hurricane. Decent hard rock album.

And the Asphalt ballet is very good.

And Train of Naught  I'm sure Europe will be glad to see the back of us. All we ever do is moan about the EU and object to everything

Only have this, In Absentia and Fear of a Blank Planet by PT so wouldn't call myself a huge fan yet. This is possibly my favourite out of the three.

Going to try and dive into his solo albums before the year is out.
