I've always thought of the term "fogey rock" as a somewhat innocent knock on the (perhaps more common) "dad rock" term. Music that is perhaps a bit harmless, not offensive and somewhat easy to digest. Things like harsh vocals or really experimental music might be met with "back in my day we did it another way" or "what are the kids listening to these days?" and perhaps a slight "stuck in the past"-mindset or being very anti new things.

I think it's interesting considering the evolution we've had in music though. A band like Iron Maiden would be considered fogey rock by a lot of people, yet when Maiden got their big break, they were a pretty "edgy" metal band that upset a lot of parents because of the lyrics and the imagery. Today, us younger people scoff at that and something else is the "new thing". So I think it's interesting how the perspective has changed as time has changed. Maybe in 20 years, people will look back at the Zantera/Sacul music like Swans, Death Grips or Boris and say "that's fogey music".  :lol

Personally I don't mind the term. There's good music that would be considered "fogey rock", I think the expression has less to do with quality and more to do with music that might be appealing to older people because it's fairly "safe".

YOUR NAME IS FUCK
I SHIT BLOOOOOOOOOD
"Dad, turn off that boring old crap".

I don't think Vanden Plas is fogey music unless you lump all the progressive / power metal into "fogey music" category.
Which I would.

My taste is all over the place these days.

I keep up with very few currently operating bands anymore, and the ones I do are either proper experimental shit (Swans, Fire! Orchestra, GY!BE, Angles 9), or pop (Florence + the Machine, Fat Freddy's Drop, Coldplay, Kimbra). Basically polar opposites.

Meanwhile, the two most recent metal albums I bought were ADTOE and Watershed, both on release. One of those is eight years old.

And I'm slowly turning fogey-er than all but the fogey-est fogeys. I've had shit like Charles Mingus, Nina Simone, Jacques Brel, and Nick Drake on high rotation in the past few years.

i mean it's like that halfway point between power metal and prog metal that a lot of the fogeys seem to love

Some of the fogeys.... there's plenty that aren't into this - but overall, there are very few that dig paramacore.
well yeah that's the point  :P
it's not called "fogeycore" is it

hmm. this both has more metal stuff and more atmospheric stuff than their previous, it feels like
also the keyboard player picked a better synth tone for every song, except the final long track
it feels a bit more cohesive overall though

for the record these and a few others in my bunch of albums were just "lol why not" albums bcuz they were so cheap from the seller anyways, but i do kinda dig this band's sound regardless  :lol

Ex military - Death Grips, I was dragged to them when I found out Nick Reinhart and Zach Hill were the ones making the music on Jenny Death. Didn't had much faith in the band before that.

like with lazarus bird, the harsh vocals here are a weak point.
i think i like this more already tho, especially with that one-two punch of Homebound and It Comes Into View, gorgeous stuff. this is just, way more emotive than lazarus bird for me, I guess, and not as drawn out

Also, I didn't look at the pictures, going to do that right now.

Edit: um, I don't know what's so hilarious. Yeah, they're a bit on the cheesy side, but the whole album is like that, so it works for me.

Well, you listen to a lot power metal, so you may not have the most finely honed cheese detector. :P

I just don't think that prog and power metal bands ever really pull off band pictures that well. Especially when they are in what certainly looks like their 40s or even 50s and they're trying to look all intense and "metal" with plunging necklines.

i dig it.

We should make a game where you have to look at the cover of an album posted in this thread and guess, just from the artwork, whether it's Zantera / Sacul music or Paramacore. I think I would have gotten this one ^ wrong.
