Any good? I'm not much of a fan, though I bought their first on vinyl back in the day. Cocked and Loaded is a good album.

elder: wow, this sure is an elder album. i don't think it does enough to differentiate itself from their last release, and sonntag is kind of bad, but the rest of this is pretty fine enough stuff. i don't really know if it needs to exist but i don't mind listening to it. i guess if i appreciated the technicality of this stuff a bit more i'd be more enthused about it, i dunno, i like it regardless though. just not wowed by it
mord'a'stigmata: this is a bit too underwritten, i could also kind of claim the same about ansia but it's even worse here, the opening track is 12 minutes and has about three different motifs. and they're all cool motifs, but, the tracks needed to be tightened up a little. and yet it's only 40 minutes. that being said it's still enjoyable sludgy black metal though there's really very little black metal here at all, but ehh whatevs. the ending is also great. i'm not in love with it but it's alright
venenum: woo boy. so. i checked this out basically on a whim not expecting to be too into it, but.... christ, this is a very strong AOTY contender. i guess the kind of death metal i need to check out more of is the 90's progressive death metal scene because boy do i dig this sound. yeah it has heavy prog leanings and some black metal leanings too but the core is very recognizably death metal, and damn what a core it is. the suite making up the back half of the album is the clear better half of this, each track brings great stuff to the table - the first part is the most intense and dissonant but memorable as heck unlike a lot of similar stuff i've heard, the second part is one of the best goddamn prog metal instrumentals i've ever heard without even being too wanky, and the third is a great, mostly instrumental epic with just some fantastic riffage and a great reprise of the album's intro at the end, i love it. the other tracks are great too though? the intro is prob the weakest track but i'm glad it exists to be reprised, the first metal track is a bit standard but dynamic enough to keep me interested, the third track has this really memorable speedup section amongst other things, and the fourth track has a great sludgy sound to it. honestly i still am dissecting and processing this one and i look forward to spinning it a dozen or more times yet, geez i wrote a lot but i love this, a lot

dunno if you'll like it but,

yes, it's good

oh also i listened to the new ongoing concept and the new dreadnought a few days ago
i think the new one from the ongoing concept is probably better than handmade overall but didn't have any song as good as amends. i've only listened to both once though.
the new dreadnought was not very interesting and honestly i'm not surprised, they seem to focus more and more on the least appealing elements of their sound. lifewoven is great but it's a sound the band themselves clearly did not like but their music has become way too meandering with each new album since. oh well

90's death metal kind of sound? I'm pretty sure I'd like it from your description.

I'll check out the new Ongoing Concept album later I guess  :corn

Just discovered Vanden Plas, a very neat prog metal band with some great melodies. Gonna be fun to explore further.

Lingering
Oh boy, I expected that I had to wait another day before being able to listen to this. It's hard to judge after one listen but it definitely does not dissapoint. I think as an album this one has SPP's flow so far.

Berdreyminn
It's better than I expected based on the singles but I feel that overall it lacks some of the beauty of their previous album. There are some really good moments tho.

Heirs
Decided to check more from this band as I'm going to see them live (they visit my home town and tickets are very cheap). The mix between post-rock and energetic math-rock is pretty great but also a little tiring at times. I do like the happy vibes.

I love this thread because I'll look through and discover some amazing bands.

Sleep Party People - Lingering is a really good album.

A bit samey to be honest but you know what you're getting - Euro style symphonic power metal but Japanese style :lol

Personally I think some of their older stuff is better (Angel of Salvation etc......)

Paul (Lowdz) knows their back catalogue better than I so I am sure he will chime in later with his favourite of theirs.

I listened to about half of it, I agree that it was a bit samey. I might give it a full listen before the year is through.

Reporting in sir.
I would agree with Brent. Things are pretty samey so I haven't bothered to delve too deep, but what I've heard is very good. They always put a smile on my face because it's so over the top. The guitar and keyboard solos are frightening 😱🤘

I only have Angel of Salvation and Phoenix Rising, both of which are excellent.
Looking forward to hearing the new one.
